Book excerpt: Over 500 underwater photographs were taken in the Monterey and Carmel submarine canyons for the purpose of studying their microrelief. The pictures indicated that a variety of biological and physical differences exist not only within each canyon but also between the two nearby canyons. In MOnterey Canyon are to be found fine grain sediments which have been very actively churned by benthic organisms. Few rock outcrops were noted, and definitive evidence of current activity in the form of ripple marks was observed in only one region. Carmel Canyon included generally coarser grain material than Monterey Canyon and showed a marked absence of active burrowing. A large number of rock outcrops was observed and there appeared to be extensive current activity throughout most of the canyon. (Author).

Book excerpt: The first U.S. Navy aerial photographs were taken in 1913 in support of fleet exercises off Guantanamo, Cuba. Following WWI, a Navy Photographic expedition went north, making the first aerial mapping photos of the Alaskan territory. WWII found Navy shuttermen in the Pacific theatre, performing pre- and post-attack reconnaissance, along with "hitting the beach" to record the war as it unfolded. Shortly after, Navy photographic units were in the Pacific to record early atomic bomb tests. The Navy's aerial photo reconnaissance mission, both at the front end with the weaponless aircrews and the output of thousands of images and photo interpretation, continued to develop through the mid-20th century. The last aerial photo plane in the Navy's inventory was retired after flying to the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum Annex at Dulles International Airport in Fairfax County, Virginia. The 74 year odyssey of Navy and Marine Corps aerial reconnaissance photography was finished.

By the close of World War II, designated PR Spitfires could photograph Germany by day, while Mosquitoes could photograph by day or night with considerable success from heights of up to 36,000 feet. Following ten years of incredible advances in digital, optical and mechanical technology, the mid-1990s saw the RAF's Tornado GR1As using video-tape for PR, with a data link to relay pictures direct to interpreters on the ground, thus doing away altogether with wet film.
