Book excerpt: Thomas Ruff is acknowledged as a leading innovator in the generation of German artists that propelled photography into mainstream art. For more than two decades, he has pushed the limits of the photographic medium, harnessing technologies both old and new. Traditionally, photograms are made by placing objects onto photosensitive paper and exposing the paper to light, thereby recording the silhouettes of the objects. Captivated by this method but seeking to work beyond its limitations, Ruff collaborated with a 3-D imaging expert to design a virtual darkroom that would enable him to experiment with an infinite range of forms.Negatives are a direct result of Ruff’s photogram process; the white and slate-blue images are inverted versions of early-twentieth-century nude studies.

Book The Physics and Art of Photography Volume 1

Download or read book The Physics and Art of Photography Volume 1 written by John Beaver and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses art photography as a point of departure for learning about physics, while also using physics as a point of departure for asking fundamental questions about the nature of photography as an art. Although not a how-to manual, the topics center around hands-on applications, most-often illustrated by photographic processes that are inexpensive and easily accessible to students (including a versatile new process developed by the author, and herein first described in print). A central theme is the connection between the physical interaction of light and matter on the one hand, and the artistry of the photographic processes and their results on the other. Geometry and the Nature of Light focuses on the physics of light and the optics of lenses, but also includes extended discussions of topics less commonly covered in a beginning text, including symmetry in art and physics, different physical processes of the scattering of light, photograms (photographic shadow prints) and the nature of shadows, elements of 2-dimensional design, pinhole photography and the view camera. Although written at a beginning undergraduate level, the topics are chosen for their role in a more general discussion of the relation between science and art that is of interest to readers of all backgrounds and levels of expertise.

Book excerpt: "Recognized as the earliest female photographer, Anna Atkins is equally remarkable for having produced the first book to use photographic illustrations. That book, [Photographs of] British algae : cyanotype impressions ... constitutes the first serious application of photography to scientific publication ... In 1841, Anna Atkins was inspired by advice from Fox Talbot, inventor of photography on paper, to take up the new art. By the autumn of 1843, she had mastered Sir John Herschel's 'beautiful process of cyanotype' (the blueprint process) and began issuing the first parts of her book, which documented her large collection of seaweed. While it was not uncommon for contemporary ladies to occupy their leisure time gathering and preserving botanical specimens, few were as dedicated or as creative as Mrs. Atkins. She inspired her friend Anne Dixon, a vicar's wife, to collaborate with her in creating the elegant cyanotype photograms of ferns, flowers, feathers, and lace which appear in this volume"--Book jacket.

Book excerpt: ADZE TO CODA Please note: this EPub is optimized for viewing on Thorium Reader. Thorium Reader is the free EPUB reader of choice for Windows 10 and 11, MacOS and Linux. https://www.edrlab.org/software/thorium-reader. The project uses photographic images to explore the concept of object, land and archaeology where the intricate patterns of both photograph and photogram sit against a stark black background. In Adze to Coda, Lloyd Godman uses the photogram technique to explore concepts of the intersection of nature and culture. The works are photographically complex and challenging to create. Combining both photographs and photograms on the same sheet of photographic paper they demand high dark room skill and patience. Four separate exposures are needed to create each unique image, and each require a great deal of experimentation, failure but ultimately success. The culmination of the project presents a huge composite photogram of a waka (canoe). A large waka (Canoe) sculpture created by sculptor Jeff Thompson at the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Art Educators, (NZAAE) conference Auckland 2003, was used as an object for the [photogram. The large waka was laid on over 50 sheets of photo paper and participants of a photogram workshop helped process the sheets of paper. ..paradox is explored further in Adze to Coda: an archaeology of device ( 1993 2004). Photographic images from the “estate of Wilderness” - native bush at Piha, on the Auckland west coast, rock formations at port Pegasus on Stewart Island in the far south - are accompanied by shaped photograms. The shapes are of simple tools - Maori fishhooks, adze heads, patu, Pakeha hammers, saws, spanners, while contained within them are photograms of layers of old gears, broken blades, corroded screws - tools of the past, returning to nature through rust and rot, ‘an archaeology of implements that reference their own history’. The series ends with 1’s and 0’s instead of tools, for with the ‘soft tools’ of the computer age we are left with binary codes rather than physical remains, and the tactility of the object is denied.
