Book Thermal Decomposition of Ionic Solids

Download or read book Thermal Decomposition of Ionic Solids written by A.K. Galwey and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal objective of this book is to stimulate interest in research that will extend available theory towards a greater understanding of the steps involved in solid-state decompositions and the properties of solids that control reactivities. Much of the activity in this field has been directed towards increasing the range of reactants for which decomposition kinetic data is available, rather than extending insights into the fundamental chemistry of the reactions being studied. The first part of the book (Chapters 1-6) is concerned with theoretical aspects of the subject. The second part (Chapters 7-17) surveys groups of reactions classified by similarities of chemical composition. The final Chapter (18) reviews the subject by unifying features identified as significant and proposes possible directions for future progress.Studies of thermal reactions of ionic compounds have contributed considerably to the theory of solid-state chemistry. Furthermore, many of these rate processes have substantial technological importance, for example, in the manufacture of cement, the exploitation of ores and in the stability testing of drugs, explosives and oxidizing agents. Despite the prolonged and continuing research effort concerned with these reactions, there is no recent overall review. This book is intended to contribute towards correcting this omission. The essential unity of the subject is recognized by the systematic treatment of reactions, carefully selected to be instructive and representative of the subject as a whole. The authors have contributed more than 200 original research articles to the literature, many during their 25 years of collaboration.Features of this book:• Gives a comprehensive in-depth survey of a rarely-reviewed subject.• Reviews methods used in studies of thermal decompositions of solids.• Discusses patterns of subject development perceived from an extensive literature survey. This book is expected to be of greatest value and interest to scientists concerned with the chemical properties and reactions of solids, including chemists, physicists, pharmacists, material scientists, crystallographers, metallurgists and others. This wide coverage of the literature dealing with thermal reactions of solids will be of value to both academic and industrial researchers by reviewing the current status of the theory of the subject. It could also provide a useful starting point for the exploitation of crystalline materials in practical and industrial applications. The contents will also be relevant to a wide variety of researchers, including, for example, those concerned with the stabilities of polymers and composite materials, the processing of minerals, the shelf-lives of pharmaceuticals, etc.

Book Photothermal Investigations of Solids and Fluids

Download or read book Photothermal Investigations of Solids and Fluids written by J Sell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photothermal Investigations of Solids and Fluids discusses photothermal optical diagnostic techniques in the study of solids and fluids, which involve areas of photothermal spectroscopy, imaging, and velocimetry. This book explores the development of lasers as powerful and convenient sources of localized energy. Organized into 10 chapters, this monograph begins with an overview of photothermal spectroscopy as the field in which the nature of matter is probed using optical excitation of a medium and optical probing of the thermal energy that results from this excitation. This book then provides the reader with a link between the physics applicable to the photothermal experiments and the methodology involved in such investigation. Other chapters examine the experimental photothermal detectors that are constructed for use in most forms of chromatography and electrophoresis. The final chapter deals with several promising spectroscopies, including photothermal interferometry, photothermal modulation of Mie scattering, and photophoretic spectroscopy. Graduate students, professors, and research scientists will find this monograph extremely useful.

Download or read book Electrochemistry written by J. A. Friend and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 973 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemistry is a collection of papers presented at the First Australian Conference on Electrochemistry, held in Sydney on February 13-15 and in Hobart on February 18-20, 1963, jointly sponsored by The Royal Australian Chemical Institute, The University of New South Wales, and The University of Tasmania. This conference highlights the numerous advances in the field of electrochemistry. This book is organized into 12 parts encompassing 70 chapters. The first parts deal with the solid-state reactions and processes in electrochemistry; the thermodynamic aspects of electrolytes; and the role of electrodic in corrosion control. The succeeding parts explore the concepts of equilibrium and non-equilibrium theory of double layers, as well as the various electroanalytical methods used in electrochemistry, including polarography, potentiometry, and coulometry. Other parts consider the areas of application of electrochemistry, such as in electroplating, anodizing, fuel cell, electrowinning, and electrorefining. The remaining chapters are devoted to non-aqueous electrolytes, molten salts, and electrode and electrochemical processes. Electrochemists and physicists will find this book invaluable.

Book Physico Chemical Phenomena in Thin Films and at Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Physico Chemical Phenomena in Thin Films and at Solid Surfaces written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the consideration of the different processes taking place in thin films and at surfaces. Since the most important physico-chemical phenomena in such media are accompanied by the rearrangement of an intra- and intermolecular coordinates and consequently a surrounding molecular ensemble, the theory of radiationless multi-vibrational transitions is used for its description. The second part of the book considers the numerous surface phenomena. And in the third part is described the preparation methods and characteristics of different types of thin films. Both experimental and theoretical descriptions are represented. Media rearrangement coupled with the reagent transformation largely determines the absolute value and temperature dependence of the rate constants and other characteristics of the considered processes. These effects are described at the atomic or molecular level based on the multi-phonon theory, starting from the first pioneering studies through to contemporary studies.A number of questions are included at the end of many chapters to further reinforce the material presented.· Unified approach to the description of numerous physico-chemical phenomena in different materials· Based on the pioneering research work of the authors· Explantion of a variety of experimental observations· Material is presented at two levels of complexity for specialists and non-specialists · Identifies existing and potential applications of the processes and phenomena · Includes questions at the end of some chapters to further reinforce the material discussed
