Book Phony Identification and Credentials Via the Internet

Download or read book Phony Identification and Credentials Via the Internet written by United States Senate and published by . This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of false identification has become a serious public safety issue. False identification documents and credentials can enable criminals to commit a host of crimes ranging from identity theft to bank and credit card fraud and allow them to fund larger and more dangerous criminal activities. Phony identification can also enable criminals to obtain bona fide, yet unsupported and unauthorized, identification documents such as driver's licenses. Moreover, criminals may be able to evade law enforcement by hiding behind their false identities. Failing to curb the spread of false identification can have grave consequences, in fact, evidence indicates that some associates of the Al Qaeda terrorist organization may have used false identification and immigration documents. Also alarming is the ease with which General Accounting Office (GAO) investigators were able to breach security at 21 of the most secure buildings in the United States, including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and several airports by claiming -- falsely, using easily-obtained phony identification -- that they were armed law enforcement officers. GAO investigators displayed fake law enforcement badges and phony credentials that they themselves had crafted using graphics software and images culled from Internet websites, and which bore little resemblance to the genuine articles. When the investigators presented themselves at security checkpoints, they were waved around metal detectors and were not screened.

It also studies the mechanisms for change in an army during the course of battle. Book Law and the Web of Society

Download or read book Law and the Web of Society written by Cynthia L. Cates and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2001-07-31 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From birth certificates and marriage licenses to food safety regulations and speed limits, law shapes nearly every moment of our lives. Ubiquitous and ambivalent, the law is charged with both maintaining social order and protecting individual freedom. In this book, Cynthia L. Cates and Wayne V. McIntosh explore this ambivalence and document the complex relationship between the web of law and everyday life. They consider the forms and functions of the law, charting the American legal structure and judicial process, and explaining key legal roles. They then detail how it influences the development of individual identity and human relationships at every stage of our life cycle, from conception to the grave. The authors also use the word "web" in its technological sense, providing a section at the end of each chapter that directs students to relevant and useful Internet sites. Written for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in law and society courses, Law and the Web of Society contains original research that also makes it useful to scholars. In daring to ask difficult questions such as "When does life begin?" and "Where does law begin?" this book will stimulate thought and debate even as it presents practical answers.
