This was previously viewed as a primitive/irreducible property of grammar. Recent work, however, suggests that it follows from principled interactions between the syntactic and phonological components of grammar. As such, the phonetic character of movement chains can be seen as both a reflection of and probe into the syntax-phonology interface. This volume deals with repetition, an atypical outcome of movement operations in which displaced elements are pronounced multiple times. Although cross-linguistically rare, the phenomenon obtains robustly in Nupe, a Benue-Congo language of Nigeria. Repetition raises a tension of the descriptive-explanatory variety. In order to achieve both measures of adequacy, movement theory must be supplemented with an account of the conditions that drive and constrain multiple pronunciation. This book catalogs these conditions, bringing to light a number of undocumented aspects of Nupe grammar.

Gradience is at the centre of controversial issues in the theory of grammar and the understanding of language. The acceptability of words and sentences may be linked to the frequency of their use and measured on a scale. Among the questions considered in the book are: whether such measures are beyond the scope of a generative grammar or, in other words, whether the factors influencing acceptability are internal or external to grammar; whether observed gradience is a property of the mentally represented grammar or a reflection of variation among speakers; and what gradient phenomena reveal about the relationship between acceptability and grammaticality, and between competence and performance. Prior phonotactic modeling, motivated by gradient acceptability judgments in nonce word judgment tasks (Albright 2009), claim that phonotactic grammaticality is gradient, and these models are evaluated by their ability to judge nonce words with scores that correlate with human acceptability judgments. Gorman (2013) argues that these gradient models do not account for the facts sufficiently and claims phonotactic grammaticality is categorical. In this thesis, the account of Gorman (2013) is implemented as well as a prominent gradient model from Hayes and Wilson (2008) and compared with the performance of two machine learning models (a support vector machine and a recurrent neural network), with all models trained on a corpus of English onsets. Results in this thesis show that the computational models are unable to correlate with human judgment data from Scholes (1966) as well as a categorical prediction of acceptability based on whether a sequence is attested in the lexicon or not, and that these models rely on assumptions which when challenged show that the models do not convincingly capture the gradience of the human judgment data used for evaluation.

Many of the papers develop a structural account of their data, in which strength relations are understood to reflect asymmetric licensing relations holding between units in representations. The volume provides a snapshot of current thinking on the question of strength in phonology. The range of language data and theoretical contexts it explores give a clear indication that phonological strength acts as a common thread to unite a range of apparently unrelated patterns and processes.

Topics of investigation could be: (1) phonological representations in the mental lexicon – specified minimally in terms of categorical phonological information or as variable phonetic imprint of the occurrences in the input, (2) sounds and sound-changing processes – systemic and functional aspects, (3) prosodic units such as syllables and metrical feet, as well as the phonological phrases that are connected to syntactic units of the sentence – systemic- properties, processing and phonetic consequences, (4) tones as building blocks of the sentence melody – their relation to the level of linguistic expressions on the one hand, their phonetic realisation (e.g., tonal height and contours) and perception on the other hand. Experimental contributions making use of behavioural methods including eye movement studies and methods like EEG, fMRI, MEG and EPA to investigate production and perception of phonetic and phonological entities are particularly welcome. Book excerpt: A wealth of psycholinguistic evidence has shown that words, before being visually recognized, decompose into smaller orthographic units which may seem to correspond to, but aren’t necessarily, morphemes. Such a procedure of morphological decomposition is commonly assumed to solely rely on islands of regularity – namely, statistical orthographic regularities, with no regard to the words’ meaning. Building on these results, the present investigation assesses the sensitivity of decomposition to non-semantic (i.e., phonological, lexical, and morpho-syntactic) properties, as a way to probe the time-course of visual word processing. In showing that decomposition may also be affected by whole-word lexicality and whole-word frequency, this book proposes a novel model of lexical access, in which decomposition encompasses a multi-step mechanism that first generates multiple possible morpho-orthographic decomposition patterns of the visual stimulus, and then evaluates them in parallel in order to choose the optimal candidate for activation.
