Book Handbook of Japanese Phonetics and Phonology

Download or read book Handbook of Japanese Phonetics and Phonology written by Haruo Kubozono and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first comprehensive handbook of Japanese phonetics and phonology describing the basic phonetic and phonological structures of modern Japanese with main focus on standard Tokyo Japanese. Its primary goal is to provide a comprehensive overview and descriptive generalizations of major phonetic and phonological phenomena in modern Japanese by reviewing important studies in the fields over the past century. It also presents a summary of interesting questions that remain unsolved in the literature. The volume consists of eighteen chapters in addition to an introduction to the whole volume. In addition to providing descriptive generalizations of empirical phonetic/phonological facts, this volume also aims to give an overview of major phonological theories including, but not restricted to, traditional generative phonology, lexical phonology, prosodic morphology, intonational phonology, and the more recent Optimality Theory. It also touches on theories of speech perception and production. This book serves as a comprehensive guide to Japanese phonetics and phonology for all interested in linguistics and speech sciences.

Book Japanese Tone Structure

Download or read book Japanese Tone Structure written by Janet Breckenridge Pierrehumbert and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1988 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Japanese Tone Structure" provides a thorough, phonetically grounded description of accent and intonation in Tokyo Japanese and uses it to develop an explicit account of surface phonological representation. The unusual amount of quantitative phonetic data analyzed and its testing in a detailed model make this an important new study for theoretical phonologists, phoneticians, and specialists in Japanese. The authors' broader purpose, however, is to develop a general theory of surface representation that can capture salient facts about prosodic structure in all languages and provide a suitable input to phonetic rules. The theory integrates autosegmental principles into a metrical account of prosodic structures in an explicit formalism. The work establishes phonology and phonetics as a productive area in cognitive science.Janet B. Pierrehumbert is a member of the technical staff in the Department of Artificial Intelligence Research at AT&T Bell Laboratories. Mary E. Beckman is an Assistant Professor in the Department. of Linguistics at Ohio State University. "Japanese Tone Structure" is a Linguistic Inquiry Monograph.

Book Prosody and Prosodic Interfaces

Download or read book Prosody and Prosodic Interfaces written by Haruo Kubozono and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume brings together novel, original studies on prosody and prosodic interfaces. It consists of fifteen chapters, some of which look at word prosody and phrase prosody in individual languages, some examine the interactions between lexical tones and intonation, and others analyze the syntax-prosody interface. Despite much recent attention paid to prosody, there is yet a significant number of languages and dialects that remain largely undocumented or understudied. Many chapters in this volume contribute to this empirical gap in prosodic research by presenting new data, based on original fieldwork and experiments. Moreover, many chapters address important questions pertaining to the interactions between lexical and postlexical tones with in-depth investigations of both lexical prosody and postlexical phonology. Furthermore, other chapters tackle the question of how prosodic structure-either lexical or postlexical-interacts with syntactic structure, thereby contributing to our understanding of the interaction between multiple components of the grammar, embedded in a thorough understanding of current linguistic theories. The volume as a whole addresses many difficult issues and illuminates the question of how prosody is structured in language and functions in human communication"--

Book The Phonetics of Japanese Language

Download or read book The Phonetics of Japanese Language written by P M Suski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives true characters of Japanese speech sounds in reference to European speech sounds. When it was first published in 1931, it was the first book of its kind. There are only 5 Japanese vowel elements as opposed to 18 in English, 13 in French and 8 in German. There are 15 Japanese consonants, 26 in English, 22 in French & 23 in German. Because of the lesser number of elements, it follows that the wider range in vowels and consonants is heard by Japanese ears, so this volume gives average sounds uttered by Japanese in the twentieth century in relation to the English sounds.

Book Word and Sentence Prosody

Download or read book Word and Sentence Prosody written by Haruo Kubozono and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive work on word and sentence prosody in Koshikijima Japanese, a dialect of Japanese not fully documented in the literature. It is an endangered dialect spoken by about 2,000 speakers on a small southern island in Japan. Being separated from mainland dialects by the sea, this dialect exhibits unique prosodic features not shared by other Japanese dialects. It also exhibits considerable regional variations among the ten or more small villages that were isolated from each other until recently. Based on the author’s fieldwork, the book analyzes word accent and intonation, the two linguistic areas in which this endangered dialect exhibits unique features and remarkable regional variations within itself. They include the emergence and development of a secondary H tone, postlexical deletion of the primary H tone, and the L boundary tone in question and vocative intonation. These phenomena bear crucially on general issues in prosody, including postlexical tonal neutralizations, competitions between lexical and postlexical tones, and the number of tones that a syllable can maximally bear. The book thus demonstrates the relevance of studying an endangered language/dialect in general linguistic contexts.

Book Phonetics and Phonology of Moras Feet and Geminate Consonants in Japanese

Download or read book Phonetics and Phonology of Moras Feet and Geminate Consonants in Japanese written by Hiromi Otaka and published by Rlpg/Galleys. This book was released on 2009 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides a clear account of the temporal organization of Japanese phonology, especially the phonetic and phonological nature of moras, feet, and geminate consonants in Japanese. The topics covered include pre-nasal shortening, Japanese perception of rhymes, the occurrence of geminate consonants in Japanese compounds and English loanwords, sequential voicing called rendaku, and the bilabialization of /h/ in counting words which are preceded by the numerals san (three) and yon (four)." "The underlying theme is to provide empirical evidence of whether or not the mora controls isochrony in Japanese rhythm by analyzing the results of more than twenty production and perception experiments which were conducted with a total of 960 native Japanese and English speakers. This book is suitable not only for professional linguists, but also for people who are learning Japanese as a foreign language and wish to explore various theoretical issues of Japanese phonology."--BOOK JACKET.
