The present study aimed to contribute to the spelling research on dyslexia by analyzing the spelling errors dyslexic students make when encoding unfamiliar words. The spelling performances of 54 high school seniors on the WRAT-III, WJ-III, and Slingerland High School Screening Test for the Identification of Language-Learning Strengths and Weaknesses were analyzed with respect to linguistics and phonology, in particular, for the purpose of determining the specific nature of the errors produced. Analysis of subjects' spelling errors indicated that they were phonetically-based and likely influenced by poor awareness of English phonology and the rules of English spelling.
