Book Phonological Disorders in a Ndebele Speaking Child

Download or read book Phonological Disorders in a Ndebele Speaking Child written by Sithembinkosi Dube and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an experimental, single case study, I investigate the disordered speech of a (4 1/2) year old Ndebele speaking child through a comparative study. A "cognitively" normal (41/4) year old Ndebele speaking child, is used as the control of the study. The aim of the investigation is to establish the speech sound system the subject is using and to test whether assessment protocols based on English, such as the Phonological Assessment Of Child Speech (PACS) framework by Grunwell (1985), suit the diagnosis of this subject's speech disorder. The investigation is based on data collected from the subjects and the control through single 40-minute assessment sessions (one after the other) using probe tasks in the form of a picture alphabetic chart in Ndebele, designed for this study. Data collected is analysed according to Grunwell's (PACS) framework. The PACS analysis established that the speech sound system of the subject of study differed from that of the control as a result of delayed acquisition of certain speech segments; this is evidenced by a reduced inventory of speech sounds when compared to the control..

Book Phonological Disorders in Children

Download or read book Phonological Disorders in Children written by Mehmet S. Yavas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, the recent developments in the study of phonological disorders in children had led to a fruitful interaction between speech pathology and phonology. It is one aspect of the application of linguistic theory to the study of speech and language disorders which had opened up a new field, clinical linguistics. This book brings together the concerns of the linguist and the speech pathologist; the essays chosen share the quality of not discussing theory or therapy without addressing the implications one has for the other. By concentrating on recent work the editor hoped to stimulate further discussion in this important and fast growing area of research.

Book Phonology for Communication Disorders

Download or read book Phonology for Communication Disorders written by Martin J. Ball and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook describes the approaches to phonology that are most relevant to communication disorders. It examines schools of thought in theoretical phonology, and their relevance to description, explanation and remediation in the clinical context. A recurring theme throughout the book is the distinction between phonological theories that attempt elegant, parsimonious descriptions of phonological data, and those that attempt to provide a psycholinguistic model of speech production and perception. This book introduces all the relevant areas of phonology to the students and practitioners of speech-language pathology and is a companion volume to the authors’ Phonetics for Communication Disorders.

Book Focus on Phonological Acquisition

Download or read book Focus on Phonological Acquisition written by S.J. Hannahs and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1997-12-31 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this edited volume comes at a time when interest in the acquisition of phonology by both children learning a first language and adults learning a second is starting to swell. The ten contributions, from established scholars and relative newcomers alike, provide a comprehensive demonstration of the progress being made in the field through the theory-based analysis of both spontaneous and experimental acquisition data involving a number of first and second languages including English, French, German, Korean, Polish and Spanish. Aimed at those active in phonology and its acquisition, yet written to be accessible to the non-specialist as well, the volume carefully lays out the various theoretical frameworks in which the authors work such as Feature Geometry, Lexical Phonology, Non-Linear Phonology, Prosodic Phonology, and Optimality Theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarises research findings from a range of projects using a set of auditory and speech procedures designed for the psycholinguistic framework developed by Stackhouse and Wells (1997). These procedures have been used with children and adolescents with a range of difficulties associated with cleft lip and palate, dysarthria, dyspraxia, phonological impairment, Down syndrome, dyslexia, stammering, autism, semantic-pragmatic difficulties, general learning difficulties, and disadvantaged backgrounds. The procedures have also been used with normally developing children in the age range of 3-7 years. As a result, the book includes descriptions of typical performance on the procedures so that atypical can be identified more easily. In addition, as the materials were used in a longitudinal study of children’s speech and literacy development between the age of 4 and 7 years we can highlight which procedures will help in identifying children a) who are likely to persist with their speech difficulties and b) have associated literacy difficulties.

Book On Under reported Monolingual Child Phonology

Book excerpt: This book compiles original studies investigating crosslinguistic child phonological development in typical and atypical settings, that is, protolanguage phonology. It documents recent developments on typically developing populations, and atypical developmental speech in children with autism, developmental language disorder affecting speech, childhood apraxia of speech, phonological assessment and intervention, phonological awareness in (a)typical contexts affecting literacy, and motor speech analysis in speech sound disorders. The book will be of interest to linguists and academic researchers, as well as postgraduate students who are investigating child language acquisition in monolingual settings.
