Book Imagination in Landscape Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book Imagination in Landscape Painting Classic Reprint written by Philip Gilbert Hamerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imagination in Landscape Painting Landscape-painters, like other men, may be endowed with the imaginative faculties in the most various degrees and in quite different orders. We shall have to discriminate between some, at least, of these in the course of the fol lowing chapters. For the present we must content ourselves with the simple assertion, to be maintained subsequently by proofs, that there is nothing peculiar in the imagination of a landscape-painter, except this, that it is occu pied with objects and phenomena that interest him more peculiarly than others. Not that other people are necessarily without interest in these objects and phenomena, for if they were so, the productions of the landscape-painter would have no sale, and he could never win reputation. Thousands of passages in litera ture give evidence of a landscape-painter's tastes, and many seem to prove that the writer possessed exactly the kind of imagination which we are in the habit of attributing to painters. There is abundant evidence, too, of the presence of taste and imagination exercised with reference to landscape, in people who have no artistic training Whatever, and who do not express themselves in literature. We know this by their evident delight in romantic natural. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Great Masters of Landscape Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Masters of Landscape Painting Classic Reprint written by Emile Michel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Masters of Landscape Painting As regards modern times, it is the scarcely enviable privilege of my age to have come in contact with most of the landscape painters who have been the glory of our nineteenth century school. Some of the details which I give concerning them, their careers and their ideas, I have had either from their own lips or from their friends and acquaintances. But to criticise impartially the artists of one's own day, one must not be too near them, and it is for this reason that this volume deals only with those who are no longer with us. With regard to the illustrations, I have endeavoured to give all the variety that my subject demanded. In addition to masterpieces consecrated by universal admiration, it has been my aim to reproduce many remarkable works which are less known, more particularly those now in America. I have added some facsimiles of original drawings by the masters, studies from nature or made in preparation for their pictures, and also some photographs of engravings, and lithographs of their works done by themselves or by other artists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Painting It is to be regretted that the art of color printing has not yet reached a stage of development where it can be trusted with the reproduction of a mas terpiece of landscape, which often de pends for its beauty on color-tones and color-transitions of extreme delicacy. In the present volume it has been judged best to confine the reproduc tions to simple half-tones in black and white to give no color rather than color which is false and misleading; and the illustrations here included are therefore presented, not as adequate representations of the works them selves, but as hints and suggestions only of the qualities which give to those works their distinction and their beauty. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Art in America, a Dissertation Upon Vital Topics of the Day: Perhaps of All Time It has been said: He is a poor cannot talk about his trade - philosophically, of course l for the great work is not to pull down, but to build up, as in this, humanity finds exceeding great and pure joy. Goethe exclaims, moreover: For eternal truths and lasting emotions one should go to the great writers of the past - true workers in the field Of literary art, all of them, - Who have outlived the changes of taste and time! Now as poet and sage combined in one, commend us to Solomon himself, not only the wisest of men, but ever evincing a most remarkable taste and fondest liking for the beautiful in Nature and in Art. For what can be more truly aesthetic, and certainly giving a leading and invaluable idea in decorative art - to say nothing of a highly appreciated suggestion to a landscape painter - than is to be found in the full significance of his familiar but imperishable proverb, A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of Silver? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Artist's Point of View, Embraced in a Series of Letters on Landscape Painting and Kindred Topics Of those underlying principles of art, whatever knowledge I have has been ac quired by studying carefully the best as well as the worst efforts of recognized artists, and through the reading of good books treating of art, along with that which may have come to me during a limited course of academic studies in drawing. To acquire any sort of proficiency in draughtsmanship, you should if possible attend a regular art school for a year or two at least; if unable to do this, then do the best you can without it. It goes without saying that the careful study of all grades of pictures, more especially of good ones, and the perusal of books on art, must prove beneficial to the young painter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Landscape Painting in Oil Colours The following pages treat of one branch of the Art of Oil Painting - that of imitating upon canvas, with fidelity and truth, the varied aspects of Nature, as they present themselves to the eye in Landscape. It is taken for granted that the pupil is so far acquainted with the general principles of Drawing and Perspective, as to be able to apply them with facility and certainty to the representation, in out line, of a given view or subject. This being the case, he will see principles and rules here laid down which will place within his reach the power of secur ing to himself one of the most delightful and agree able accomplishments he can possess. These rules he will find compressed within moderate limits but he will find them also to be fully sufficient to ensure no mean proficiency in the practice of the Art, if hewill apply himself to the pursuit with thoughtful diligence and patient assiduity. In order that the subject may be laid before him clearly and methodically, the matter is generally divided into three parts. The First Part consists of a description of the Implements and Materials used in the branch of Art here treated of. The Second Part contains a concise but clear explanation of the general Processes and Manipulations by which the various pictorial effects can be faithfully represented. The Third Part con sists of an explanation of the Principles upon which a Landscape should be painted, and of the Mode of applying the processes and manipulations described in the previous part. Book Landscape in Art Before Claude and Salvator Classic Reprint

Download or read book Landscape in Art Before Claude and Salvator Classic Reprint written by Josiah Gilbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape in Art Before Claude and Salvator Several years ago, when engaged upon the work entitled Cadore, or Titian's Country, I had occasion to examine the landscape introduced more or less as background in the works of several Italian masters of the sixteenth century. My object was to ascertain how far the strange forms of the Dolomite mountains, constantly to be recognised in Titian's landscape, could be identified in that of contemporary painters. During this investigation I was Struck with the amount of landscape beauty which passed unnoticed amidst the imposing claims of great sacred subjects, or those of mythologic legend; I felt, too, that in these neglected corners of canvases, if the study of them were sufficiently wide and thorough, might be traced the rise and early progress of landscape-painting. Some years had passed when it was proposed to me to write something like a history of this delightful art. It was a task too large to undertake, but the suggestion drew my thoughts again to the germs of landscape spread through all mediaeval art. The more I looked into the subject, the more interesting it became, and it had also the fascination of a region hitherto unexplored, and retreating into a dim unknown.
