Book The Higher Realism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Higher Realism Classic Reprint written by Duston Kemble and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Realism Much of the matter contained in these pages was originally jotted down to preserve occasional thoughts on philosophy. These have gradually taken on a more regular form, and finally resulted in this little volume. The author certainly has no intention of entering far into the technical discussions of present-day thought; and he hopes to be not very tedious in the subjects here treated, although some of them might be elaborated to an indefinite length. Some of the views given are believed to be new; but they are confidently left to the liberal judgment of those who love the highest Truth, and who care to find therein an aid to ultimate Faith and Hope. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Realism: A Study in Art and Thought If there are obvious examples of realistic art which seem to be passed over, it is because the instances in the book have not been chosen with any thought of completeness, but only as illustrating the view suggested there. I have drawn almost always from my own observation, though any one will see how much I also owe to the work of others. In the philosophical passages it has been hard to take a connected survey. Modern philosophic realism is still in the making, and as a distinguished ex ponent has said to me, No two of us agree.' This being so, it is inevitable that some theories should appear to be emphasised at the expense of others, but the attempt to give a general of them seemed to be worth making. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Berkeley and Spiritual Realism Spinoza and Berkeley: a coincidence - Among modern philosophers Spinoza and Berkeley rank together in the manner of their reception. For more than a century after they died both were misinterpreted or neglected. Within the last century each in his way has become an influential factor in the excitement and formation of philo sophical thought. Both tardily recognised - Spinoza died in 1677, and for more than a hundred years after was vaguely regarded as an impious atheist, under the ban of civil and ecclesiastical authority. Berkeley died in 1753, and. For a century was ridiculed as an eccentric visionary, who denied the reality of the earth on which he trod, and of the human beings by whom he was surrounded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Realism: Coöperative Studies in Philosophy ON July 21, 1910, we published a brief article entitled The Pro gram and First Platform of Six Realists, ' 1 in which we indicated the direction philosophical inquiry ought to take. We there asserted that advance would be facilitated by cooperative investigations; and the drafting of the platform was a first attempt to confirm this belief. The present volume continues, on a larger scale, the work there inaugurated; and we hope it will be followed by other col lections of studies. The introductory essay voices our common opinions. The other essays do so only in part. It has seemed best to publish them with out laboring for complete unanimity, inasmuch as their agreements quite overshadow their differences. They have been written after prolonged conferences. A few important debatable topics are briefly discussed by dissenting members in the Appendix. Book The New Idealism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Idealism Classic Reprint written by May Sinclair and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Idealism What is the exact position of Idealism at the present day? What is likely to be its position in the future? How is it going to emerge, if it emerges at all, from its encounter with the New Realism? There is no denying that the New Realism has made a prodigious disturb ance in philosophic thought, a disturbance so vital and far-reaching that philosophic thought will never look the same again. The idealist is fatuously sanguine if he expects his own pet system to come up out of the turmoil looking just the same. Never before has there been such a ruthless exposure of the weak points in his position. At the present moment it seems fairly Safe to say that the Old Idealism, I mean the Idealism of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, of Berkeley, of Kant and Hegel, of the new-kantians and new-hegelians, all the old logic and epistemology (horrible word) will have to go and give place to an idealism which will take serious account of the world of space and time. Download or read book Syndicalism and Philosophical Realism written by J. W. Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syndicalism and Philosophical Realism: A Study in the Correlation of Contemporary Social Tendencies Previous to 1905, Mr. Cole tells us, trade unionism in America had attained great numeri cal strength. It belonged in its main features to what we called above the elementary type. Each trade stood for itself. Its energies were given to the primitive policies of keeping the trade a close preserve, preventing the encroach ments of allied craftsmen, limiting the number Of apprentices, and insisting on entrance fees. Little thought was given to the idea Of united action in a cause common to all the trades. Out Of such mutually independent unions was formed - also in 1886 - the American Federa tion Of Labour, which now Officially represents trade-unionism in America. As a body it still preserves its character. In fact, its critics, the sponsors of the newer unionism, seem to denounce it habitually as being individualistic and aristocratic in temper, and declare that it has on that account no message for the work ing class. Book Evolutionary Naturalism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Evolutionary Naturalism Classic Reprint written by Roy Wood Sellars and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolutionary Naturalism I cannot close without a word as to the situation in philosophy to-day. The critical realist is of the opinion that there is far more agreement in the ranks than is realized. It is not his purpose to found a new philosophical sect. Let me take this opportunity to say that it is his opinion that critical realism does justice to the insights of both pragmatism and neo-realism. I have tried to develop this thesis in Chapter IV. I have hopes that Evolutionary Naturalism will be taken by pragmatists and neo - realists, alike, as a constructive attempt at the metaphysical development of that new pluralism, as Professor Woodbridge calls it, toward which they are both working. The present work is the fulfilment of the promise made in my first book some five years ago that I would subsequently deal with the categories. Perhaps I did not fully realize then how much I was undertaking. This book was in substance completed two years ago, though there have since been minor alterations. I take this opportunity of promising a third book to deal with human life, that is, with values and institutions. I wish to make acknowledgment to my wife for her helpfulness and loyalty; also, to the Open Court Publishing Company for their cour tesy and careful attention to all those details which fall upon the broad shoulders of publishers.
