Its lands were situated not only in the country between the Seine and the Loire, but lay in small and scattered fragments farther south, in Poitou, and in the north. Peculiar rights belonged to the king in distant towns and churches. He was lord in Orleans. He was abbat of S. Martin's at Tours /and senior canon of the church of S. Quentin. And step by step within the lands of the great lords of the north, of the great dukes and the great ecclesiastics, he acquired new rights, by intervening to check some injustice or win some privilege on behalf of a lesser lord. His horse stood saddled in the court, and all seemed prepared for departure; and without well knowing why, but with the mere indistinct desire of flying from the sorrows that pursued him, he mounted his horse and turned him to the road. Shall we follow, my Lord? Demanded his Squire, running at his bridle as he rode forward. Ha - Yes lav - Follow replied the Count, and galloped on with the letter the page had given him, still in his hand. He rode on with the swiftness of the wind; whenever his horse made the least pause, urging him forward with the spur, as if a moment's cessation of his rapid pace gave him up again to the dark and gloomy thoughts that pursued him like fierce and winged fiends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social France at the Time of Philip Augustus Earthquakes, especially, dismayed them. Anjou was Shaken in 1207; Normandy, in 1214; Gascony, in 1223. The tremor of March 3, 1206, was felt at the same time in Burgundy and Limousin. According to the monk of saint-martial, the shocks came in the middle of the night. Monks, saying their offices in the choir, took to flight, and laymen leaped from their beds; it was observed that even the birds trembled with fear and that water-courses were more boisterous than usual; and, to appease an irate Heaven, an extraordinary procession was arranged at Limoges. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dukes of Normandy, From the Time of Rollo to the Expulsion of King John by Philip Augustus of FranceOn the death of this enlightened sovereign, the un happy divisions among his sons spread anarchy and discord in all directions; his defensive policy was abandoned, and the northern pirates, who had invaded Belgic Gaul so early as the year 286 of our era, but who had been held in check by the armed fleets sta tioned by Charlemagne at the mouths of rivers, again renewed their predatory incursions. Plunder alone' was the object of the early adventurers, with which they returned to their native country. After the lapse of several centuries, Rollo, the most distinguished of the Scandinavian chiefs, subdued one of the finest provinces of Gaul, and acquired a permanent home and sovereignty, by founding the duchy of Normandy. The object of this introduction is briefly and rapidly to trace the character and conduct of his predecessors, before he obtained full and independent possession of N custrin.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Foreign Quarterly Review Vol 7 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Foreign Quarterly Review Vol 7 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 7 The reign of Philip-Augustus belongs to two centuries, the twelfth and thirteenth, - centuries of no little importance in the history of European civilization. At a period like this, when events which have their origin in the progress, decay, and reproduction of past institutions are daily being developed, the study of the different steps by which the citizen has become what he is must be an occupation of the most lively interest. It is a remark of the author of the work before us, that we are apt to consider revolutions in a far too confined point of view; we limit the epoch by its visible signs and its finished results; but these results have been in long preparation. Society does not receive a new form in a day; the ideas cast abroad in one century become the leading principles of the next; in short, in the history of mankind everything is gradual; - a revolution is but the explosion of a train that has been long and curiously laid. The period in which Philip-Augustus was a great instrument in modelling and arranging the internal forms of society, is marked as the age in which the beginnings of numerous great changes had their commencement, - in which they arose into obvious existence, without, however, then receiving their accomplishment. It was the dawn of the great intellectual reformation, which has since made such rapid progress, and is every day more and more expanding its propitious light. The two grand elements which operated on society from the establishment of the barbarous invaders in Roman Gaul, and which maintained a continual struggle for predominance over the opinions of men from the seventh to the tenth century, were the material force of the conquerors, and the moral and intelligent force of the clergy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Limbo of Forgotten Things a Book of Verse "Philip (Augustus') second wife was Ingeborg of Denmark, whom he married in 1193, and divorced the day after their marriage. He soon afterward married Agnes of Meran. Ingeborg appealed to the Pope, who took her cause in hand, and, on Philip's refusing to abandon Agnes, placed the kingdom under an interdict. The services ceased in all the churches: the people were without prayers. In the end the king was obliged to yield. He sent away Agnes of Meran, who died of grief, and took Ingeborg back." Victor Duruy, History of France. Note. The cause of Philip's repudiation of Ingeborg has never been known to history. For the purposes of romance I have assumed it to be his already formed attachment to Agnes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
