Book Measurement of phi Meson Production in Cu Cu Collisions at 200 GeV Using the PHOBOS Detector at RHIC

This book was released on 2012 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strong enhancement of production of strange particles, and in particular of [phi] mesons, in heavy ion collisions of sufficiently high energies has been predicted to be an indication of a formation of a new state of matter, composed of deconfined quarks and gluons and having a property of chiral symmetry, called Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). Studying production of [phi] mesons is of special interest due to their small cross-section of interaction with non-strange hadrons and due to their long lifetime, which should allow [phi] mesons to decouple from the strongly interacting medium produced in heavy ion collisions early in time and to escape the medium before decaying, thereby preserving information about the conditions in which the mesons were produced. In addition, the decay properties of [phi] mesons have been predicted to be modified in a hadronic gas medium. The [phi] -> K+K~ decay is of particular interest since the mass of a [phi] meson in vacuum is very close to the mass of two charged kaons, and consequently, even a small change in the mass or the width of [phi] mesons or in the mass of kaons would have a strong effect on the decay properties. Measurement of [phi] meson production using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has proven to be especially challenging due to a small acceptance of the PHOBOS spectrometer and due to a much lower than predicted yield of [phi] mesons in heavy ion collisions at the highest RHIC energy. The measurement required a development of a new tracking algorithm, specifically tailored to reconstruct charged kaons with a high efficiency in a high hit density environment, keeping at the same time the necessary computing time within feasible limits. Book Production Of phi Mesons in Au Au Collisions at the AGS

Download or read book Production Of phi Mesons in Au Au Collisions at the AGS written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first measurements of[phi] meson production in Au-Au collisions at AGS energies are presented via the decay to K[sup+] K[sup[minus]]. A measurement of the centrality dependence of the yield shows an increase similar to that seen for the K[sup[minus]] with a spectral shape consistent with a relativistic Breit-Wigner distribution within the statistical errors of the present data set. Future analysis using the full data set with 4 times the statistics will allow a more accurate determination of the yields, slopes and spectral shapes.

Download or read book Production Of phi Meson in Au Au Collisions at 11 7 A GeV c written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Measurement of[phi] meson production in Au+Au collisions has been conducted by E917 at BNL-AGS via selecting events with identified K[sup+]K[sup[minus]] pairs. Preliminary results on the invariant mass spectra of K[sup+]K[sup[minus]] pairs and the m[sub T] spectra are presented. Also, the inverse slope T, dN/dy, the ratio of[phi]/K[sup[minus]], ratio of[phi]/K[sup+]K[sup[minus]] and their centrality dependences are extracted in a rapidity range of y= 0.9-1.4. Indications on the possible mechanisms of[phi] production are discussed.

Book The PHENIX Experiment at RHIC

Download or read book The PHENIX Experiment at RHIC written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Later this decade the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) will be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Its goal will be to accelerate and collide Au beams at 100 GeV/c in an attempt to create a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). The PHENIX detector aims to detect the QGP through its leptonic and hadronic signatures. We describe here its physics capabilities and the details of the apparatus designed to pick out rare leptonic signatures from among hadronic multiplicities of up to 1500 particles per unit of rapidity.

Book Production of phi Mesons in Central Si Au Collisions at 14 6 A GeV c

Download or read book Production of phi Mesons in Central Si Au Collisions at 14 6 A GeV c written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of [phi] mesons from central Si+Au collisions has been measured by E859 at the BNL-AGS by selecting events with identified KK− pairs. The values for the mass and width of the [phi] obtained from the invariant mass of the kaon pairs are consistent with those of the Particle Data Book. Preliminary results for the invariant 1/2[pi]m{sub T} d2n/dm{sub T}dy distribution and dn/dy are presented. The inverse slope parameter for an exponential m{sub T} fit to the m{sub T} spectrum is 171±18 MeV. An analysis of the ratio of the [phi] signal to the combinatoric background in the K+K− invariant mass distribution provides a rough estimate of the size of the reaction region, which is found to be consistent with the E859 interferometry measurements.
