Book Surveying and Monitoring of Animal Genetic Resources

Download or read book Surveying and Monitoring of Animal Genetic Resources written by and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2011 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, adopted in 2007, is the first internationally agreed framework for the management of biodiversity in the livestock sector. It calls for the development of technical guidelines to support countries in their implementation efforts. Guidelines on the Preparation of national strategies and action plans for animal genetic resources were published by FAO in 2009 and are being complemented by a series of guideline publications addressing specific technical subjects. These guidelines on Surveying and monitoring of animal genetic resources address Strategic Priority Area 1 of the Global Plan of Action - "Characterization, inventory and monitoring of trends and associated risks". They complement, in particular, the guidelines on phenotypic characterization and on molecular genetic characterization. They have been endorsed by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. Knowledge of animal genetic resources is fundamental to their sustainable use, development and conservation. These guidelines provide advice on how to draw up a strategy for meeting national needs for data and information on animal genetic resources. They also offer practical advice on how to plan and implement an animal genetic resources survey - covering the whole process from planning the survey to disseminating the outputs and taking the first steps in translating results into action. A range of surveying tools are presented, and advice is offered on how they can be combined and integrated within an effective strategy that addresses both the task of acquiring a baseline of data on animal genetic resources and the subsequent task of monitoring changes over time. Book THE SECOND REPORT ON THE STATE OF THE WORLD s ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES FOR FOOD AND AGRICULTURE

Download or read book THE SECOND REPORT ON THE STATE OF THE WORLD s ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES FOR FOOD AND AGRICULTURE written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal genetic resource diversity underpins the supply livestock products and services across a wide range of production environments. It promotes resilience and serves as a basis for adapting livestock management to changing conditions. It is vital to livelihoods of many of the world’s poor people. It can contribute to the delivery of ecosystem services such as landscape management and the maintenance of wildlife habitats. However, it is often undervalued, underused and under threat. This report updates the global assessment provided in the first report on The State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, published in 2007. It focuses particularly on changes that have occurred during the period since the first report was published. It serves as a basis for a review, and potential update, of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, which since 2007 has provided an agreed international framework for the management of livestock biodiversity. Drawing on 129 country reports, it presents an analysis of the state of livestock diversity, the influence of livestock-sector trends on the management of animal genetic resources, the state of capacity to manage animal genetic resources, including legal and policy frameworks, and the state of the art in tools and methods for characterization, valuation, use, development and conservation.

Book Genomic characterization of animal genetic resources

Download or read book Genomic characterization of animal genetic resources written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular biotechnologies have developed rapidly and substantially since the release of these previous guidelines. The livestock sector has been an active participant in the so-called “genomic revolution.” Advancements in the sequencing of genomes and related genotyping methods have created opportunities for gathering much more information on the molecular level than ever possible, at a faster rate, and for exponentially decreased costs. Scientists and other livestock stakeholders in countries with highly developed economies have been among the main beneficiaries of this revolution. However, the greatly decreased costs of genomic applications have also created opportunities in countries with developing and transitional economies. In many instances, the lack of awareness of these opportunities and in the technical capacity for the full application of genomic tools may represent a greater obstacle to their utilization than the expenses involved. The development of these guidelines and the subsequent application of the information contained herein may help to bridge this gap, bringing new opportunities to light and transferring knowledge that can be used to increase the genetic characterization of AnGR and subsequently improve the sustainable use and conservation of livestock genetic diversity.

Book Phenotypic Characterization of Local Chickens

Download or read book Phenotypic Characterization of Local Chickens written by Michael Augustus Entsuah and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution and density of birds vary from place to place. Local chickens, which are not properly characterized, have been found to vary widely in body size conformation, plumage colour and other phenotypic characteristics (Mogesse, 2007). The productivity of indigenous birds under the rural production systems has been reported to be very low (Teketel, 1986). This low productivity may be attributed to lack of improved poultry breeds, the presence of predators, the incidence of chicken diseases, poor feeding and management factors(Alemu, 1995; Alemu and Tadelle, 1997). Hence, the FAO of the United Nations has proposed an integrated programme for the global management of genetic resources on an international level. This is being developed by FAO, with the main objective of assisting countries by providing extensive searchable databases and guidelines for better characterization, utilization and conservation of animal genetic resources. Accordingly, this study sought to unearth the variation among local chickens in other part of the country in terms of feather distribution and structure, the presence of genes responsible for such variation and other morphological features.

Book excerpt: About the Book The book, "Atlas Animal Genetic Resources of India", is an original work through a collective efforts of the authors who themselves carried out the phenotypic and genetic characterization of breeds of different livestock and poultry species. The book is based on review of published and unpublished information on different breeds, compilation of own data collected by the authors through field based studies. The book describes a total of 174 breeds and populations including all the extant and newly described ones. The book also describes the details of each of the livestock and poultry species including their history of origin and domestication, geographical and demographic distribution, ecology and environment, genetic diversity, livestock production system and socio-economic importance under Indian Aariculture. These concepts have been supported by quality photographs. Within each species, all the extant breeds and newer breeds and populations known till date have been described for their origin and distribution, synonymous names, geographical location, population distribution, herd and flock structures, phenotypic and morphometric descriptions. The growth and body weights, production and reproduction parameters have been described. The present trends in population growth and present status of the breeds based on population estimates and percentage of females being bred pure has been given for each breed and populations. The photographs from left side of the animals of both and female sexes have been given. Majority of the photographs were authors own collection and others have been taken from the Photographic Unit of National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources. The book contains 274 pages of comprehensive text on different species and breeds. There are 213 references quoted for the literature referred for the compilation of the Atlas. The Atlas also contains 435 quality coloured photo plates, maps and figures that were required to explain the status and distribution of the breeds. All the authors have equal contribution beginning from the conceptualization, compilation and editing of the manuscript.

Book Genetic Data Analysis for Plant and Animal Breeding

Download or read book Genetic Data Analysis for Plant and Animal Breeding written by Fikret Isik and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills the gap between textbooks of quantitative genetic theory, and software manuals that provide details on analytical methods but little context or perspective on which methods may be most appropriate for a particular application. Accordingly this book is composed of two sections. The first section (Chapters 1 to 8) covers topics of classical phenotypic data analysis for prediction of breeding values in animal and plant breeding programs. In the second section (Chapters 9 to 13) we provide the concept and overall review of available tools for using DNA markers for predictions of genetic merits in breeding populations. With advances in DNA sequencing technologies, genomic data, especially single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, have become available for animal and plant breeding programs in recent years. Analysis of DNA markers for prediction of genetic merit is a relatively new and active research area. The algorithms and software to implement these algorithms are changing rapidly. This section represents state-of-the-art knowledge on the tools and technologies available for genetic analysis of plants and animals. However, readers should be aware that the methods or statistical packages covered here may not be available or they might be out of date in a few years. Ultimately the book is intended for professional breeders interested in utilizing these tools and approaches in their breeding programs. Lastly, we anticipate the usage of this volume for advanced level graduate courses in agricultural and breeding courses.
