Book excerpt: In the global scale, the genus Pheidole Westwood, 1839 is one of the most diverse ant genera. However, very little is known about the Pheidole fauna of Madagascar - an island considered as a global biodiversity hotspot. Most of the data describing the diversity of this genus on the island can be found in a number of short faunistic notes in majority originating in the late 1800s. The last Madagascar Pheidole species was described more than 100 years ago.Thanks to comprehensive inventories conducted across the island the Pheidole collection deposited at the California Academy of Sciences contains more than 50,000 specimens from almost 4,500 localities. This material, combined with type specimens deposited in Museum d'Historie Naturelle, Geneva, was used as a base for a taxonomic review of this genus.Here we present an introduction to Pheidole of Madagascar, define 16 species groups, containing approximately 140 species, and revise eleven of them. The monograph also includes keys to species groups, and 52 species - members of groups revised in this monograph. This publication is meant to be the first in a series aiming to revise the taxonomy of all Pheidole in Madagascar.

Eighteen members of this group are recognized and described, and an illustrated identification key to this group is also presented. One name is raised to species level: P. decollata Forel, 1892 stat. nov. We also redescribe worker castes and designate lectotypes for P. bessonii Forel, 1891, P. decollata Forel, 1892, P. grallatrix Emery, 1899, P. madecassa Forel, 1892, and P. oswaldi 1891. Book excerpt: Nylanderia (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is a genus in the Prenolepis genus-group of formicine ants. They are distinguished from other formicine genera by the presence of six (rarely seven) mandibular teeth, paired macrosetae on the head and mesosoma, and a global distribution. Over 130 species have been described, 13 of which are from the Nearctic region, which includes Canada, the United States, and areas of northern and central Mexico. Two species are newly described from the Nearctic region: N. querna and N. trageri, both from the central United States. All castes of each taxon are accompanied by images and known distribution maps. Updated keys for both workers and males include these new taxa. Worker morphology is frequently convergent and male features have proven effective in distinguishing species, and special attention is focused on the male caste. It is not unlikely that further analysis of widespread species would indicate cryptic complexes. Discussion follows on discovery of new species, biogeography, and social parasitism in the clade.
