Book Phase 2 Site Investigations Report Volume 2 of 3 Site Specific Investigations

Download or read book Phase 2 Site Investigations Report Volume 2 of 3 Site Specific Investigations written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposed investigative activities for the sites identified at the Sudbury Annex (the Annex) were determined through a review of previous activities and findings, and are governed by the established Scope of Work (SOW). The objectives of the activities were to determine whether any contamination exists in groundwater, surface water, sediment, or surface/subsurface soils at the assigned Phase II sites, and, in the cases where contamination is thought or known to exist, to confirm and better characterize its nature and extent. To evaluate each site, and to develop a better understanding of the site's impact on the Annex environment, the Annex has been divided into seven distinct watersheds. In this report, general findings of the field effort are first summarized for each watershed as a whole. Detailed information about activities undertaken and sampling results is then provided for each site. Conclusions and recommendations are reviewed and discussed in conjunction with the findings of the Phase I investigation conducted by OHM Remediation Services Corporation (OHM). Data results are presented with each site investigation (SI) section. The methodology used in the screening of analytical results generated through this Phase II SI, and the screening values used to identify areas of possible concern, are fully explained in Section 7, Volume 1 of this report. The appendices provide field reports, special studies and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) results used throughout this report to support the information presented in the text.

Book Design build Subsurface Projects

Download or read book Design build Subsurface Projects written by Gary S. Brierley and published by SME. This book was released on 2010 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design-Build construction has become so widely accepted that owners and their advisors must seriously consider this approach when making decisions about project delivery. With its opportunities for cost containment and substantial risk transfer, Design-Build is increasingly becoming the delivery method of choice for owners with challenging funding limitations. But deciding to use the Design-Build system for underground projects is one thing; successfully implementing it is quite another. Design-Build Subsurface Projects, Second Edition, can help bridge that gap. First published in 2002, this cutting-edge book provides a straightforward, comprehensive look at how to make Design-Build work on complicated projects involving tunnels, highways, dams, and deep foundations. The authors are a "who's who" of subsurface construction experts, many of whom are key players in the most high-profile and challenging projects in the world. Drawing upon their wealth of practical experience, they spell out a list of common sense best practices that can be used by today's project owners and designers. Be advised: these authors don't shy away from the many thorny issues of Design-Build. Nor are they unabashed cheerleaders. They dispassionately explore both the advantages and disadvantages of this system, which must be carefully weighed and evaluated so planners can decide what is best for their projects based on all the important variables, including third-party impacts and environmental/community concerns. You'll find extensive information about procurement, as well as risk allocation issues, which are significantly different from the Design-Bid-Build approach. Team structure, agreements, design development, subsurface exploration, geotechnical reports, construction phase issues, and insurance are also examined in great detail. Design-Build Subsurface Projects is an indispensable resource for owners, engineers, construction managers, contractors, and others involved in the design and construction of subsurface projects. You'll gain a thorough understanding of how and why the system works and where the pitfalls can arise. The authors' years of experience will benefit even the most seasoned of practitioners.

Book Contaminants in the Subsurface

Download or read book Contaminants in the Subsurface written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-04-23 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At hundreds of thousands of commercial, industrial, and military sites across the country, subsurface materials including groundwater are contaminated with chemical waste. The last decade has seen growing interest in using aggressive source remediation technologies to remove contaminants from the subsurface, but there is limited understanding of (1) the effectiveness of these technologies and (2) the overall effect of mass removal on groundwater quality. This report reviews the suite of technologies available for source remediation and their ability to reach a variety of cleanup goals, from meeting regulatory standards for groundwater to reducing costs. The report proposes elements of a protocol for accomplishing source remediation that should enable project managers to decide whether and how to pursue source remediation at their sites.
