Book Russians in Alaska 1732 1867

Download or read book Russians in Alaska 1732 1867 written by Lydia Black and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive work, the crown jewel in the distinguished career of Russian America scholar Lydia T. Black, presents a comprehensive overview of the Russian presence in Alaska. Drawing on extensive archival research and employing documents only recently made available to scholars, Black shows how Russian expansion was the culmination of centuries of social and economic change. Black s work challenges the standard perspective on the Russian period in Alaska as a time of unbridled exploitation of Native inhabitants and natural resources. Without glossing over the harsher aspects of the period, Black acknowledges the complexity of relations between Russians and Native peoples. She chronicles the lives of ordinary men and women the merchants and naval officers, laborers and clergy who established Russian outposts in Alaska. These early colonists carried with them the Orthodox faith and the Russian language; their legacy endures in architecture and place names from Baranof Island to the Pribilofs. This deluxe volume features fold-out maps and color illustrations of rare paintings and sketches from Russian, American, Japanese, and European sources many have never before been published. An invaluable source for historians and anthropologists, this accessible volume brings to life a dynamic period in Russian and Alaskan history. A tribute to Black s life as a scholar and educator, "Russians in Alaska" will become a classic in the field."

  • Pages : 343 pages

Download or read book Landmark Papers written by John D. Clemens and published by Mineralogical Society. This book was released on 2012 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compilation of landmark papers on granite petrogenesis is overdue. This volume is organized into a number of sections that represent what the editors regard as the main research fields in which progress has been made in understanding granites and their genesis. The origin of granitic magmas is part of the cycle that unites tectonic processes with the generation of mantle magma, crustal growth, the transfer of mantle heat to the crust, high-grade regional metamorphism, crustal melting and crustal differentiation. The extended subject area is far too wide to deal with in a single volume and therefore the selection has been limited to papers dealing with the formation, physical behaviour and chemical evolution of granitic magmas, and just touching on the matter of associated ore deposits. John (JC) Clemens and Fernando Bea are world experts on the subject of granite petrogenesis. Clemens' most important work has been on the origin and evolution of granites and silicic volcanic magmas, experimental studies and modelling of partial melting and the ascent and chemical evolution of granitic magmas, and these continue to be his main interests. Bea's research interests have been in the petrology and geochemistry of granite rocks and the mechanisms of generation of granite magmas, having studied in detail the role of heat-producing elements.

Book Dena inaq Huch ulyeshi

Download or read book Dena inaq Huch ulyeshi written by Suzi Jones and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The range of the Dena’ina people stretches from the Cook Inlet region to southcentral Alaska and has been established for a thousand years. Yet their culture has largely been overlooked, leaving large gaps in the literature. Dena’inaq’ Huch’ulyeshi, a new catalog of Dena’ina materials, is an ambitious project that finally brings their culture to light. Lavishly illustrated with more than six hundred photographs, maps, and drawings, Dena’inaq’ Huch’ulyeshi contains 469 entries on Dena’ina objects in European and American collections. It is enriched with examples of traditional Dena’ina narratives, first-person accounts, and interviews. Thirteen essays on the history and culture of the Athabascan people put the pieces into a larger historical context. This catalog is a comprehensive reference that will also accompany a large-scale exhibition running September 2013 through January 2014 at the Anchorage Museum.
