Book Pharmacological Sciences Perspectives for Research and Therapy in the Late 1990s

Download or read book Pharmacological Sciences Perspectives for Research and Therapy in the Late 1990s written by Claudio Cuello and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 1995-09-28 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume arose from the scientific program of the XIIth International Congress of Pharmacology, held in Montreal, Canada, July 24-29, 1994. The scientific program included plenary lectures and symposia, in addition to poster presentations and colloquia. The abstracts of the Congress presentations were published as .supplement 1 of volume 72 by the Cana dian Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology. The Congress organizers sought a more expansive treatment of the Congress proceedings and appointed Dr. A. Claudio Cuello to coordinate preparation of the present volume; Dr. Brian Collier was chair of the scientific program committee and, thus, also collaborated on this work. The objective that we pursued was to produce a volume of reasonable size which would feature all of the plenary lectures and symposia from those authors who agreed to participate. To this end, we solicited mini reviews from plenary lecturers and asked symposia organizers to coordi nate a single short-review covering the individual topics within their event. Those who accepted this challenge are evident in this volume. We express our gratitude to these authors for doing so, and for exercising considerable ingenuity in completing their task within a reasonable time.

This book was released on 2007-12-22 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for effective therapy to treat Alzheimer’s disease is greater than ever, but there is still no drug therapy that can stop or reverse the progression of the disease. There is, however, a great deal of anticipation over the imminent development of effective therapies as a result of the identification of promising targets for drug development. This book investigates these targets and examines ongoing strategies to develop effective therapies for this devastating neurodegenerative condition.

The distinguished contributors clarify the approaches being taken to identify and develop new therapeutic agents for such neurological and psychiatric disorders as epilepsy, memory loss, affective illnesses, and psychosis. They also examine the therapeutic potential that remains in the cloning and expression of the GABA transporter, and in developing additional agents capable of regulating GABA receptor function. The book will play a key role in further expanding the list of drugs that interact with the GABA neurotransmitter system.

Book A Comprehensive Guide To Chinese Medicine

The audience therefore includes clinicians who want to serve their patients better and patients who are eager to supplement their own conventional treatment. The authors of the book belong to three different fields, viz. clinical and basic sciences, Chinese medicine and pharmacology. They provide information from their areas of expertise and concern, attempting to make it comprehensive for users. The approach is macroscopic and philosophical; readers convinced of the philosophy are to seek specific assistance.

It covers the two main - and reciprocal - questions of these relationships: How are structure and function of the cytoskeleton affected by external signals which impinge on the cell? How does the cytoskeleton influence the cellular signaling processes which determine cell behavior?

Download or read book Neuroimmunoendocrinology written by J. Edwin Blalock and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosion of information on immuneneuroendocrine interactions has continued unabated since the first and second editions of this volume appeared in 1988 and 1992. This third revised and enlarged edition offers an authoritative update on the latest advances in knowledge of the molecular, structural, and cellular bases of bidirectional communication between the immune and neuroendocrine systems. The eight invited chapters review current evidence that the immune system produces and responds to neuroendocrine peptide hormones and neurotransmitters; that the nervous system produces and responds to cytokines; that the immune system can regulate the neuroendocrine system and vice versa; that the immune system is innervated, and that the neuroendocrine and immune systems share a set of hormone and cytokine receptors. All chapters and bibliographies from the second edition have been expanded to include the most recent literature in these areas. In addition, the text provides a new chapter which is the first to compare the three-dimensional structures of cytokines and hormones complexed with their receptors. As the only text to provide an up-to-the-minute account of the cellular, molecular and structural mechanisms of communication between the immune and neuroendocrine systems, this well-written volume will be of interest to many scientists in the fields of immunology, endocrinology, physiology, neuroscience and structural biology, and will also be a valuable resource for clinicians.
