Book Receptions of Simon Magus as an Archetype of the Heretic

Download or read book Receptions of Simon Magus as an Archetype of the Heretic written by Alberto Ferreiro and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-14 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about receptions of Simon Magus uncovers further facets of one who was held to be the evil archetype of heretics. Ephraim Nissan and Alberto Ferreiro explore how Simon Magus has been represented in text, visual art, and music. Special attention is devoted to the late medieval Catalan painter Lluís Borrassà and the Italian librettist and musician Arrigo Boito. The tradition of Simon Magus’ demonic flight, ending in his crashing down, first appears in the patristic literature. The book situates that flight typologically across cultures. Fascinating observations emerge, as the discussion spans flight of the wicked in rabbinic texts, flight and death of King Lear’s father and a Soviet-era Buryat Buddhist monk, flight and doom of the fool in an early modern German broadsheet, and more. The book explains and moves beyond extant scholarly wisdom on how the polemic against Mani (the founder of Manichaeism) was tinged with hues of Simon Magus. The novelty of this book is that it shows that Simon Magus’ receptions teach us a great deal about the contexts in which this archetype was deployed.

Book Paul s Early Period

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rainer Riesner
  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9780802841667
  • Pages : 556 pages

Download or read book Paul s Early Period written by Rainer Riesner and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riesner recognizes a problem in the chronologies proposed in the literature he surveys: often one or two 'absolute dates' are given, and the rest of the chronological details follow from those few established dates. In the next section Riesner seeks to go point-by-point through a chronology of the early ministry of Paul, discussion the evidence at each point for particular events in Paul's life and ministry. He is wary not to merely fit a date into a chronological scheme without providing good support for that date independent of other chronological markers (if possible). Riesner interacts with both conservative and non-conservative literature. The bibliography is massive (80 pages, with approximately 30 sources per page!), and footnotes in the volume indicate that Riesner is, indeed, familiar with the literature.

Book Maximus I von Turin

  • Author : Andreas Merkt
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2015-12-22
  • ISBN : 9004313079
  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book Maximus I von Turin written by Andreas Merkt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the sermons of St. Maximus I, Bishop of Turin about AD 305-420. It presents an exemplary study which, besides clarifying problems of dating and authorship, points out the importance of context for an appropriate interpretation of sermon literature. The sermons are thus placed in the contexts of contemporary history, of society and of liturgy. The liturgical contextualisation forms the core of the book. The author reconstructs the liturgical year of late-Antique Turin and takes it as the basis of a detailed diachronic analysis of the bishop's preaching from advent to pentecost. Additionally, the Feasts of the Saints are seen in their kerygmatic function. In a concluding chapter the author tackles such problems as the exegetical nature of preaching and the importance of the Bible.

Book Petrus Martyr Vermigli Kommentar zur Nikomachischen Ethik des Aristoteles

Download or read book Petrus Martyr Vermigli Kommentar zur Nikomachischen Ethik des Aristoteles written by Luca Baschera and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENGLISH Contrary to an old thesis, the dawning of the Reformation was not the end of Christian Aristotelianism. Rather, Protestants were again faced with the traditional question of the relationship between theology and philosophy. Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499-1562) counts as one of the authors who endeavored to interpret Aristotelian philosophy before the backdrop of Reformed theology. In addition to numerous exegetical and theological writings, this well respected theologian left behind a commentary on Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, which is edited in the present volume. It not only evidences Vermigli’s intense engagement with the source material but also his struggle for an adequate understanding of the relationship between Aristotelian ethics and Protestant theology.

  • Publisher : Society of Biblical Lit
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 1589835158
  • Pages : 259 pages

Download or read book Paul the Martyr written by David L. Eastman and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2011 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient iconography of Paul is dominated by one image: Paul as martyr. Whether he is carrying a sword--the traditional instrument of his execution--or receiving a martyr's crown from Christ, the apostle was remembered and honored for his faithfulness to the point of death. As a result, Christians created a cult of Paul, centered on particular holy sites and characterized by practices such as the telling of stories, pilgrimage, and the veneration of relics. This study integrates literary, archaeological, artistic, and liturgical evidence to describe the development of the Pauline cult within the cultural context of the late antique West.
