Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter SimpleAt last I tore myself away. I had blubbered till my eyes were so red and swollen, that the pupils were scarcely to be distinguished, and tears and dirt had veined my cheeks like the marble of the chimney-piece. My handkerchief was soaked through with wiping my eyes and blowing my nose, before the scene was over. My brother Tom, with a kind ness which did honour to his heart, exchanged his for mine, saying, with fraternal regard, Here, Peter, take mine, it's as dry as a bone. But my father would not wait for a second handkerchief to perform its duty. He led me away through the ball, when, having shaken hands with all the men, and kissed all the maids, who stood in a row with their aprons to their eyes, I quitted my paternal roof. The coachman accompanied me to the place from whence the stage was to start. Having seen me securely wedged between two fat old women, and having put my parcel inside, he took his leave, and in a few minutes I was on my road to London.I was too much depressed to take notice of any thing during my journey. Ivhen we arrived in London, they drove to the Blue Boar (in a street, the name of which I have forgotten). I had never seen or heard of such an animal, and certainly it did appear very formidable; its mouth was Open and teeth very large. What surprised me still more was to observe that its teeth and hoofs were of pure gold. Who knows, thought I, that in some of the strange countries which I am doomed to visit, but that I may fall in with, and shoot one of these terrific monsters? With what haste shall I select those precious parts, and with what joy should I, on my return, pour them as an offering of filial affection into my mother's lap l - and then, as I thought of my mother, the tears again gushed into my eyes.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Peter Simple This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Household of Peter: A Novel But he has not asked us yet, Ranee, ' objected her sister, 'and I am not at all sure that he will do so; and perhaps if we were to drop a hint, or throw a little cold water, when first he starts the idea, he may be induced to think with us. Peter is only a young man, and in matters of etiquette women are often the best judges.' Vera spoke with such unusual decision and dignity that Sallie, who had hitherto remained silent, looked up rather apprehensively from her drawing, - only at that moment Ranee tapped the table playfully and called them to order. Vera may be right, as I said before, but I refuse to say another word until Peter comes in. It is only an hour before luncheon, and I mean to Sit down to my lace-work so, ladies, we will consider the case of Hannah Burke shelved for the present.' Ranee's mode of disposing of a vexed question was more than a trifle abrupt, and Vera, who would have preferred to talk over the matter comfortably, looked somewhat disappointed; but she was yielding and gentle by nature, and generally followed her sister's lead. Ranee was impetuous, but she was wonderfully clever and quick-witted, and undoubtedly she was right in one matter: whatever their own private opinion might be, at the Red House Peter's word was law. In their simple creed the family pope was infallible, and might issue a new bull if he pleased every day of his life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of St. Peter in an English Home Harold and Robin Hartley were the adopted sons of the widowed Lady Laurie, and as dear to her heart as was her only daughter Ida. Since the time that the missionary Mr. Hartley's two motherless boys had arrived under the lady's hospitable roof, she had, till this year, rarely been parted from either of them even for a day. Their joys and sorrows were hers; and to train her three children for heaven had been Lady Laurie's dearest object on earth. The year preceding that on which my story opens had been one of strong lights and shadows to the Hartleys. Then had occurred the fearful Mutiny of 1857, to which their only remaining parent had all but fallen a victim, even his death having been (though falsely) reported. To this sorrow had succeeded the great joy of Mr. Hartley's unexpected return to his native country. But the missionary had remained but six months in England to recruit his broken health he was so intensely anxious to return to his little native flock, whom he had been compelled to leave without any earthly shepherd in a time of confusion and danger, that nothing could persuade Mr. Hartley to remain away from the land where he had nearly lost his life. One care had been removed from the missionary's mind before he left. Mr. Hartley's elder son, Harold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But Satan is not such a fool. Champagne and Martinis do not taste like Gregory powder, nor was St. Anthony tempted by shrivelled hags. Paganism can be gay, and passion look like love. More over, still more truly, Christ could see the potentiality of virtue in Mary Magdalene and of strength in Simon called Peter. The conventional religious world does not. June knows Peter needs to be on the move, so she sends him to Memphis to help her friend Wanda Wyatt, a photographer and war correspondent who's been receiving peculiar threats. The heist doesn't go as planned, and the young man finds himself holding a sack full of Rolexes and running for his life. When his getaway car breaks down, he steals a new one at gunpoint--Peter's 1968 green Chevrolet pickup truck. Peter likes the skinny kid's smarts and attitude, but he soon discovers that the desperate musician is in far worse trouble than he knows. And Wanda's troubles are only beginning.
