Download or read book The Case of Peter Rabbit written by Margaret Mackey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the example of The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter to explore the impact of new media and technologies on how children learn about stories and reading, this book investigates nearly 100 re-tellings in a variety of media, some authorized by Potter's publisher Frederick Warne, some unauthorized. It looks at the implications of converging developments in children's literature: new media and technologies now readily available to children leading to new conventions and protocols of storytelling; changing commercial pressures on publishers and an emphasis on producing commodities associated with books and videos; saturation marketing which targets children and adults in different ways; and a cultural emphasis on the fragmentation, adaptation, and re-working of texts. The Tale of Peter Rabbit is now available as picture book, chapter book, board and bath book, pop-up, video (in versions that adhere to the original story and versions that deviate radically to include new adventures or Christian messages), ballet, CD-ROM, computer disc, audio tape, and filmstrip. The character of Peter Rabbit may be purchased as toy, clothing, dish, ornament, wallpaper, food, paper doll, and much else. His story and that of his author, Beatrix Potter, reappear in fragmented form in other books for children, in a murder mystery for adults, and in a graphic novel for teenagers. This book raises questions about the impact of these developments on young readers. Index. Appendix. Bibliography.

Download or read book The Natural History of Make Believe written by John Goldthwaite and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-02-22 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man in the Moon has dropped down to earth for a visit. Over the hedge, a rabbit in trousers is having a pipe with his evening paper. Elsewhere, Alice is passing through a looking glass, Dorothy riding a tornado to Oz, and Jack climbing a beanstalk to heaven. To enter the world of children's literature is to journey to a realm where the miraculous and the mundane exist side by side, a world that is at once recognizable and real--and enchanted. Many books have probed the myths and meanings of children's stories, but Goldthwaite's Natural History is the first exclusively to survey the magic that lies at the heart of the literature. From the dish that ran away with the spoon to the antics of Brer Rabbit and Dr. Seuss's Cat in the Hat, Goldthwaite celebrates the craft, the invention, and the inspired silliness that fix these tales in our minds from childhood and leave us in a state of wondering to know how these things can be. Covering the three centuries from the fairy tales of Charles Perrault to Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, he gathers together all the major imaginative works of America, Britain, and Europe to show how the nursery rhyme, the fairy tale, and the beast fable have evolved into modern nonsense verse and fantasy. Throughout, he sheds important new light on such stock characters as the fool and the fairy godmother and on the sources of authors as diverse as Carlo Collodi, Lewis Carroll, and Beatrix Potter. His bold claims will inspire some readers and outrage others. He hails Pinocchio, for example, as the greatest of all children's books, but he views C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia as a parable that is not only murderously misogynistic, but deeply blasphemous as well. Fresh, incisive, and utterly original, this rich literary history will be required reading for anyone who cares about children's books and their enduring influence on how we come to see the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memorable children's narratives immerse readers in imaginary worlds that bring them into the story. Some of these places have been constructed in the real world--like Pinocchio's Tuscany or Anne of Green Gables' Prince Edward Island--where visitors relive their favorite childhood tales. Theme parks like Walt Disney World and Harry Potter World use technology to engineer enchanting environments that reconnect visitors with beloved fictional settings and characters in new ways. This collection of new essays explores the imagined places we loved as kids, with a focus on the meaning of setting and its power to shape the way we view the world.

For this series she used local animals and events as her inspiration, and even wrote herself into a few of her books. Born into a privileged household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets and spent holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developing a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Though Potter was typical of women of her generation in having limited opportunities for higher education, her study and watercolours of fungi led to her being widely respected in the field of mycology (the study of fungi). In her thirties, Potter self-published the first of her highly successful children's books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Thereafter Potter began writing and illustrating children's books full-time. Fifteen of which are reproduced here in all their glorious colour. In all Potter wrote about 30 books; the best known being her 23 children's tales. With the proceeds from the books and a legacy from an aunt, in 1905 Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey, a village in England’s Lake District. She died of pneumonia and heart disease on 22 December 1943 at her home in Near Sawrey at the age of 77, leaving almost all her property to the National Trust. She is credited with preserving much of the land that now constitutes the Lake District National Park. Potter's books continue to sell throughout the world in many languages with her stories being retold in song, film, ballet, and animation, and her life depicted television and feature films. ================ KEYWORDS: Peter Rabbit, Friends, Beatrix Potter, children’s stories, lake district, England, bedtime stories, mischievous, animals, Flopsy, Mopsy, Peter, Cotton-tail, Mr McGregor, Mrs. Rabbit, Farmer Potatoes, blackberries, naughty, French beans, radish, parsley, cucumber, 'Stop thief, run, fast, watering can, cabbages, robins, lost, sneeze, jump, dash, vegetable garden, cat, fish, outside, free, home, hoe, gate, scarecrow, camomile tea, bread, milk, blackberries, sleep, hide, Tale of Peter Rabbit, Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, Tailor of Gloucester, Tale of Benjamin Bunny, Tale of Two Bad Mice, Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pan, Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, Story of Miss Moppet, Tale of Tom Kitten, Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, Tale of Samuel Whiskers, Roly-Poly Pudding, Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies, Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse, disobedience, behavior, behaviour, childhood, child,
