Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 25 years, Peter Powning has earned respect among connoisseurs of fine craft as one of Canada's most innovative ceramists. Many people recognize his distinctive and commercially successful raku pottery, but few realize that he is also a sculptor with an international reputation. Gloria Hickey has curated the first national solo exhibition of Powning's sculpture for the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, and Peter Powning: Elemental Clay and Glass documents this exhibition with 40 colour and 12 black and white photographs. Powning has exhibited his clay, glass and bronze works in over 60 galleries in the Canada, the US, Germany, Scandinavia, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, China and Japan. He has brought home international honours from the Fletcher juried competition in Australia and the Mino International Ceramics Competition and the Kanazawa International Exhibition of Glass in Japan. In New Brunswick, he won the 1991 Deichmann Award for Excellence in Craft and the 1993 Strathbutler Award. Gloria Hickey's curatorial essay tells how and why Powning made the pieces in the exhibition. Candid yet sensitive, it assesses Powning's importance among Canadian ceramists and glass artists, and it interprets the interests and values that permeate not only his pottery and sculpture, but his personal life as well. Peter Powning's studio is at Markhamville, near Sussex, New Brunswick. He has served on the New Brunswick Arts Board, the Premier's Advisory Council on the Arts, and the New Brunswick Craft Council, and he has been a visiting artist at the Banff Centre. Gloria Hickey, a St. John's writer and curator, twice won the Betty Park Award of Merit for her contributions to criticalwriting about craft in North America. In 1994 she was nominated for the Imperial Oil Award Excellence in Arts Journalism.

With the trial of a murderer dominating the news, the respected wife of a New Brunswick sea captain is drawn into the troubling case of a British home child. Mortified that she must purchase the beautiful teenager in a pauper auction to save her from lechery and abuse, Josephine Galloway finds herself exexpectedly the proprietor of a boarding house maintained by the sweat and tears of a curious collection of women. Among them is the English girl, Flora Salford, haunted by a missing piece of her life that she fears to be lost forever. When tragedy strikes, Flora--already struggling to earn her place in this strange new country--must decide if she can be the pillar Josephine's household desperately needs. Reconnecting with characters of Beth Powning's beloved The Sea Captain's Wife, while navigating the class realities of Victorian Canada and the rise of women's suffrage, The Sister's Tale is a story of women finding their way, together, through terrible circumstances they could neither predict nor avoid, but will stop at nothing to overcome.

Book excerpt: "I start with an original object, break it, and transform parts of the piece into other materials. These pieces gather meaning and explanation as I work with them." Peter Powning is simultaneously referred to as a sculptor and a ceramist, but his art does not fit easy categorization, incorporating and combining elements from one medium into another. His work challenges the viewer to reconsider the object, its form, and its function. This inventiveness has resulted in numerous exhibitions, awards, and commissions for public art sculptures throughout Canada. Featuring 175 full-colour images of Powning's work along with essays by curators and critics, Peter Powning celebrates the career of one of Canada's finest visual artists and accompanies a major retrospective exhibition organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, opening in September 2020.

Book excerpt: Beth Powning offers readers an unforgettable story of love, grief and renewal — both past and present — as well as her extraordinary perceptions of the natural world. At the age of fifty-two, Kate Harding has hit a crossroads: the pain that overwhelmed her when her husband died suddenly from a heart attack the previous year hasn’t diminished, and she is at a loss as to how to go on with her life. Living alone in her large Victorian house, its emptiness magnified by memories of better days, Kate can only dream of a time when her grief will abate, at least enough to allow her to hope for change. When Kate’s sister drops off nine antique hatboxes of papers recovered from their grandparents’ eighteenth-century home in Connecticut, Kate isn’ t sure she is ready to face the remnants of her family’s past. She’s having enough trouble going through Tom’s things. Soon, though, the smell of the hatboxes begins to permeate the air in her home and “awakens a feeling in Kate that she remembers from childhood, composed of odd emotional strands: love, sorrow, pain, contentment.” As she slowly sorts through the letters, diaries and photographs, Kate begins to find some solace in the past. But the further she delves into her grandparents’ history, the more Kate realizes that her perfect world had its own dark side — an undercurrent of tragedy, personal loss and eternal grief. Then an old acquaintance moves back to New Brunswick, and Kate begins to edge out of her solitude, surprising herself. But when a new tragedy comes, it forces Kate to begin picking up the pieces of her shattered life.

Book excerpt: With Beth Powning’s trademark elegance and insight into the hearts and minds of unforgettable women, A Measure of Light brings to life an extraordinary historical figure. Mary Dyer is a seventeenth-century Puritan who flees persecution in England, only to find the colony of Massachusetts Bay as dangerous as the country she left behind. Though she is the wife of a successful merchant and mother to their children, she becomes stigmatized following a birth gone terribly wrong and is reviled as a friend to the infamous heretic Anne Hutchinson. Mary tries to accept New England’s harsh realities, but is outraged by the cold-hearted Puritan magistrates, with their doctrinaire stranglehold on church and state, their subjugation of women, their wars against the natives in the surrounding territories and their vicious treatment of any who challenge their rule. Mary becomes one of America’s first Quakers. As both outcast and privileged citizen, caught between the callings of faith and the ambitions of her husband, she comes to the realization that she must follow her convictions in order to bring an end to the brutal repression of the Quakers in Massachusetts, for whom death by hanging is the ultimate punishment. From Mary’s relationship with Anne Hutchinson to her fiery exchanges with the colonial magistrates, A Measure of Light is both a sensitive work of imagination and meticulously true to the historical record. In this exceptional pairing of author and subject, Mary Dyer receives in the hands of Beth Powning— herself a New England–born Quaker—the full-blooded recognition too long denied a woman of her moral stature and significance in shaping American history.

Book On the Other Side s of 150

Download or read book On the Other Side s of 150 written by Linda M. Morra and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Other Side(s) of 150 explores the different literary, historical and cultural legacies of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations. It asks vital questions about the ways that histories and stories have been suppressed and invites consideration about what happens once a commemorative moment has passed. Like a Cubist painting, this modality offers a critical strategy by which also to approach the volume as dismantling, reassembling, and re-enacting existing commemorative tropes; as offering multiple, conditional, and contingent viewpoints that unfold over time; and as generating a broader (although far from being comprehensive) range of counter-memorial performances. The chapters in this volume are thus provisional, interconnected, and adaptive: they offer critical assemblages by which to approach commemorative narratives or showcase lacunae therein; by which to return to and intervene in ongoing readings of the past from the present moment; and by which not necessarily to resolve, but rather to understand the troubled and troubling narratives of the present moment. Contributors propose that these preoccupations are not a means of turning away from present concerns, but rather a means of grappling with how the past informs or is shaped to inform them; and how such concerns are defined by immediate social contexts and networks.
