Book The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture

Download or read book The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-11-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although chemical pesticides safeguard crops and improve farm productivity, they are increasingly feared for their potentially dangerous residues and their effects on ecosystems. The Future Role of Pesticides explores the role of chemical pesticides in the decade ahead and identifies the most promising opportunities for increasing the benefits and reducing the risks of pesticide use. The committee recommends R&D, program, and policy initiatives for federal agriculture authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sectors. This book presents clear overviews of key factors in chemical pesticide use, including: Advances in genetic engineering not only of pest-resistant crops but also of pests themselves. Problems in pesticide useâ€"concerns about the health of agricultural workers, the ability of pests to develop resistance, issues of public perception, and more. Impending shifts in agricultureâ€"globalization of the economy, biological "invasions" of organisms, rising sensitivity toward cross-border environmental issues, and other trends. With a model and working examples, this book offers guidance on how to assess various pest control strategies available to today's agriculturist.

Book The City of Greenbelt Maryland

Download or read book The City of Greenbelt Maryland written by Lesley Riddle and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over forty years ago Rachel Carson wrote of the dangers of pesticides and the abuses of the commercial pesticide industry (Carson, 1962). In 2008, the United States Department of Agriculture reported U.S. farm and professional pesticide use at about 1.2 billion pounds each year (EPA, 2011). These pesticides are absorbed into soil, water, and living tissue, unable to distinguish between intended target and other non-target organisms. The full range of harm from pesticides is not entirely known but the danger posed by pesticides to nature and humans has significant scientific documentation (Balaram, 2003). The impetus to study the use of pesticides in the city of Greenbelt grew out of concerns for public and environmental health specific to the city of Greenbelt, the wider Chesapeake Bay Watershed, and the greater global community. These issues sparked the need to develop and implement polices [sic] utilizing methods that are fiscally responsible and environmentally sustainable (ISA, 2009). In my capacity as the Assistant Director of Public Works in tandem with my work in Green Mountain College's Masters of Environmental Science program, I have created, researched, and implemented all stages of this program's development and execution. I have shaped a Sustainable Land Care Policy that will require the City reduce and eliminate the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, and I have put into action a community outreach program to promote more sustainable landscape practices.

Book Waste Composting for Urban and Peri urban Agriculture

Download or read book Waste Composting for Urban and Peri urban Agriculture written by Pay Drechsel and published by CABI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid urbanization has created a major challenge with regard to waste management and environmental protection. However, the problem can be ameliorated by turning organic waste into compost for use as an agricultural fertilizer in peri-urban areas. This is especially significant in less developed countries, where food security is also a key issue. This book addresses these subjects and is based on papers presented at a workshop held in Ghana by the International Board for Soil Research and Management (IBSRAM, now part of the International Water Management Institute) and FAO. Special reference is given to Sub-Saharan Africa, with acknowledgement to experiences from other parts of the world. Contributing authors are from several European, as well as African, countries.

Book International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management

This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding that some pesticides are more hazardous than others is well established. Recognition of this is reflected by the World Health Organization (WHO) Recommended Classification of Pesticides by Hazard, which was first published in 1975. The document classifies pesticides in one of five hazard classes according to their acute toxicity. In 2002, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) was introduced, which in addition to acute toxicity also provides classification of chemicals according to their chronic health hazards and environmental hazards.
