Book excerpt: The rationale for studying insecticide resistance in this SERDP Effort stems directly from the requirement to know the effectiveness of a particular mitigation measure before it can be recommended in a comparative risk reduction environment. The following report deals with insecticide resistance in an important pest, the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). This domiciliary pest is found in populations defined by the structure in which they inhabit. Isolation by structure provides the unique opportunity to evaluate a sample of individuals from the population for the presence of insecticide resistance before treatments are chosen or dispensed. Insecticide resistance in German cockroaches has been typically assessed by collecting cockroaches from the field and rearing them in the laboratory to acquire large numbers needed to conduct topical or residual bioassays.

Book excerpt: 1.1 Overview V ARIOWIN 2.2 is a collection of four WindowsTM programs - Prevar2D, Vari02D with PCF, Model, and Grid Display - that are used for spatial data analysis and variogram modeling of irregularly spaced data in two dimensions. Prevar2D builds a pair comparison file (PCF), that is, a binary file containing pairs of data sorted in terms of increasing distance. Pair comparison files can be built from subsets in order to reduce memory requirements. Vari02D with PCF is used for spatial data analysis of 2D data. It uses an ASCII data file and a binary pair comparison file produced by Prevar2D. Features implemented in Vari02D with PCF include: • the possibility to characterize the spatial continuity of one variable or the joined spatial continuity of two variables, • variogram surfaces for identifying directions of anisotropies, • directional variograms calculated along any direction, • several measures of spatial continuity. Not only the variogram but also the standardized variogram, the covariance, the correlogram, and the madogram are used to measure spatial continuity. • h-scatterplots to assess the meaning of these measures, • the identification and localization of pairs of data adversely affecting the measure of spatial continuity. Once identified, these pairs can be masked from the calculation interactively. • variogram clouds for identifying pairs of data values having the most influence on the measure of spatial continuity. Those pairs can also be located on the sample map.

Book excerpt: Precision targeting is a method of determining the total distribution of any parameter of interest, and directing interventions based on that distribution. Based on geostatistics, precision targeting analyzes the locations and values of observations to discern a pattern of spatial continuity of the observations, then uses this pattern to estimate distributions between sampled locations. The total distribution is then expressed as a contour map showing isolines of equal parameter density. Precision targeting has many advantages, but perhaps the greatest improvement it brings to the pest manager is the reduction in pesticides needed to control pests. Precision targeting's inherent pinpointing of pest infestations eliminates the need to treat the entire facility, thereby reducing the amount of pesticide used, the exposure, and expense associated with current methodologies. Precision targeting can make a key contribution to achieving DoD's mandate to reduce pesticide use by 50 per cent by 2000 while actually increasing the effectiveness of operations.
