Book Enhancing the Brazil EU Strategic Partnership

Download or read book Enhancing the Brazil EU Strategic Partnership written by Michael Emerson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of a joint project involving European and Brazilian scholars, this book examines ways to enhance the significance of the strategic partnership between the European Union and Brazil. It explores such key topics as - Addressing global macro-financial issues in the wake of the euro crisis - Trade relations - Climate change - Comparative regionalism - Paradigms for foreign policy The book looks at the partnership as a test case of how two players in the new multi-polar context can search for common positions on key issues of global governance. The EU and Brazil have reasonably promising grounds for working together and sharing democratic political values and common cultural roots, but Brazil is also an active member of the BRICS grouping, whose other members (notably China and Russia, but also India and South Africa) often take very different positions. The major world players are now involved in a burgeoning process of extraordinary complexity, at both multilateral and bilateral levels, searching for alliances in the shaping of a new world order. This book, limited to the bilateral EU-Brazil relationship, serves to cast clearer light on the issues.

Book Enforcing the Rule of Law

Download or read book Enforcing the Rule of Law written by Enrique Peruzzotti and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2006-04-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports of scandal and corruption have led to the downfall of numerous political leaders in Latin America in recent years. What conditions have developed that allow for the exposure of wrongdoing and the accountability of leaders? Enforcing the Rule of Law examines how elected officials in Latin American democracies have come under scrutiny from new forms of political control, and how these social accountability mechanisms have been successful in counteracting corruption and the limitations of established institutions. This volume reveals how legal claims, media interventions, civic organizations, citizen committees, electoral observation panels, and other watchdog groups have become effective tools for monitoring political authorities. Their actions have been instrumental in exposing government crime, bringing new issues to the public agenda, and influencing or even reversing policy decisions. Enforcing the Rule of Law presents compelling accounts of the emergence of civic action movements and their increasing political influence in Latin America, and sheds new light on the state of democracy in the region.

Download or read book Homeless Children written by Panos Vostanis and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of families are becoming homeless, often as a result of domestic violence, which leaves women and their school age children without homes. This multidisciplinary volume is the first to look at the variety of problems encountered by this group and to propose strategies for managing those problems. The contributors to this book provide evidence that homeless children often have more acute problems and needs than other children; as a result of the insecurity of their situation, they may experience physical health problems and developmental delay. They are also at high risk of emotional and behavioural difficulties such as sleep disturbance, eating problems, aggression, over-activity, anxiety, depression and self-harm. At the same time, due to their unstable situation, they are less able to access support from the health, education and social services. Homeless Children defines the specific problems and needs of homeless children, and draws up practical guidelines for staff and agencies on recognising and dealing with those problems. It then looks at policy and service development for homeless families in education, health and social care, and concludes that conventional methods of provision have to be adapted to meet the specific needs of this vulnerable group.

Book Rationalism Religion and Domination

Download or read book Rationalism Religion and Domination written by Wolfgang Schluchter and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Publication of this material in English should be a major event in American Weber studies. Together with Economy and Society, Weber's comparative studies in the sociology of religion represent not only his own central contribution to theoretical sociology, but also one of the most ambitious and fruitful research programs in the history of modern social theory. Schluchter analyzes both of these projects and shows how they are related. There is nothing in the Anglo-American literature on Weber's sociology of religion that can match the rigor and thoroughness of these essays. They should raise the standards of scholarly debate concerning both the general theoretical significance and the details of Weber's sociology of religion."--Guy Oakes, Monmouth University "There is next to nothing in the field of Weber interpretation that reaches the superior grasp and breadth of knowledge displayed in these essays. Exciting and illuminating, they should be essential reading for anyone interested in comparative religion and domination."--Thomas Burger, Southern Illinois University
