Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Pardee Butler: With Reminiscences I have not attempted to write a complete biography of my father, but merely to supplement his "Recollections" with a few of my own reminiscences. He was a man who said little in his family about his early years, or about any of the occurrences of his eventful life. Nor did he ever keep any journal, or any account of his meetings, or of the number that he baptized. He seldom reported his meetings to the newspapers. I think it was only during the few years that he was employed by missionary societies, that he ever made reports of what he accomplished. He had even destroyed the most of his old letters. And so, for nearly all information outside of my own recollections, I have been indebted to the kindness of relatives and friends. The later chapters have been written by men who knew my father intimately, and men whose reputations are such as to give weight to their testimony. To all of these friends I now offer my thanks for their kind assistance. And to the public I offer this book, not for its literary merit, but as the tribute of a daughter to a loved father, whose earnest devotion to duty was worthy of imitation. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reverend Pardee Butler (1816-1888) was a farmer and preacher. In 1850 he developed quinsy, causing him to give up preaching in Ohio and move to Cedar County, Iowa to improve his health. Over the next several years he preached in various places in Illinois and Missouri and in early 1855 went to Kansas. It was there that 'the rafting episode' took place on August 18, 1855. He was set adrift on the Missouri River on a raft by pro-slavery men for his abolitionist beliefs. Butler's first-hand account of the episode appears in his Recollections (1889). In 1856 the Republicans became a national party and in 1860 Abraham Lincoln became the first Republican president. The passions of which Butler was a victim continued to ferment in Kansas and the rest of the country and soon led to the Civil War. After the war, Butler continued to preach and farm. He was active in the presidential campaign of 1872. Though often urged by his friends to run for office, Butler invariably refused telling them he "considered the office of a Christian preacher the highest office on earth. "

Download or read book Men Is Cheap written by Brian P. Luskey and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a Civil War substitute broker told business associates that "Men is cheep here to Day," he exposed an unsettling contradiction at the heart of the Union's war effort. Despite Northerners' devotion to the principles of free labor, the war produced rampant speculation and coercive labor arrangements that many Americans labeled fraudulent. Debates about this contradiction focused on employment agencies called "intelligence offices," institutions of dubious character that nevertheless served the military and domestic necessities of the Union army and Northern households. Northerners condemned labor agents for pocketing fees above and beyond contracts for wages between employers and employees. Yet the transactions these middlemen brokered with vulnerable Irish immigrants, Union soldiers and veterans, former slaves, and Confederate deserters defined the limits of independence in the wage labor economy and clarified who could prosper in it. Men Is Cheap shows that in the process of winning the war, Northerners were forced to grapple with the frauds of free labor. Labor brokers, by helping to staff the Union military and Yankee households, did indispensable work that helped the Northern state and Northern employers emerge victorious. They also gave rise to an economic and political system that enriched the managerial class at the expense of laborers--a reality that resonates to this day.
