Book excerpt: This paper explores the personal, household and business environmental determinants of entrepreneurship in Kosova using binary choice model based on the large Riinvest's Labour Force and Household Survey. Research findings suggest that personal characteristics such as gender (male), living in urban areas, belonging to a large household have significant positive impact on entrepreneurship behaviour of population while we find a weak positive effect of age and no significant effect of marital status. Business environmental factors such as services and trade where start-up and sunk costs are expected to be low and rapidly growing sectors such as construction together with regions in which entrepreneurship is more developed have significant positive impact on entrepreneurship. In contrast to previous studies we find that education, family remittances and presence of additional wage earner have negative impact on entrepreneurship.

Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: very good "A", Aachen University of Applied Sciences (School of Management; George Mason University ), 22 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In dependence on the definition of entrepreneurship as the "creation of a new enterprise" as suggested by Low & MacMillan (1988: 141), this paper focuses on factors influencing the individual, or a group of individuals to start a new company. An extensive review of the literature suggests that the decision to create a new venture is influenced by a number of variables that are examined in this paper. First, the role of the individual in the venture creation process will be portrayed. It is found that personal factors are directly related to the venture creation decision. Second, as the individual faces several unforeseen challenges when deciding to start up a new business, environmental support plays a crucial role in compensating for the inherent risks of starting a new business. Thirdly, the role of culture will be appraised by showing that culture can have both a direct and a moderating effect on the individual's role in the creation decision process. The final part of the paper will integrate these three described factors into a new theoretical framework. It will be shown that the creation to start a new business depends on the individual, environmental support and the overarching culture. In addition, this new framework will introduce an individual's self-efficacy, motivation, and networking activities as necessary and critical components of the venture creation process. Based on empirical evidence from prior research it will be illustrated that networking plays a fundamental part in the venture creation decision process and that it follows a similar pattern across different cultures.

Book excerpt: Although the body of literature on women entrepreneurs is relatively small when compared to that of men, the majority of articles that have focused on women entrepreneurs and issues surrounding them have focused on women in developed countries. Few studies place emphasis on women entrepreneurs in developing countries. This paper explores the relationship between individual entrepreneurial characteristics, the entrepreneurial environment and women's business success in developing countries. Barriers to entrepreneurship and venture success such as prohibitive cultural norms and values, limited property rights, and lack of government support are among the various obstacles that women face. We use a sample of 403 women entrepreneurs from six developing countries: Argentina, Brazil, Hungary, India, Mexico, and South Africa. We focus on these countries because they represent distinct regions and diverse cultures. This paper blends country level data from the Index of Economic Freedom and the World Bank and individual level data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor to explore the business environments of these developing countries and their possible relationship with business success. We also look at the barriers that may exist for women business owners in these countries and explore their relationship with business success. Initial results indicate that certain individual factors (i.e. knowing an entrepreneur, household income), entrepreneurial environment, financial and governmental barriers all play a role in venture success for women entrepreneurs in developing countries.
