Because the Shahnama presents itself as a chronicle of the reigns of the shahs from the primordial founders to the Sasanian dynasty which ended in 651, scholarly attention has centered on the question of its historical accuracy. Addressing the literary as well as the historical and mythological aspects of the Shahnama, Olga M. Davidson makes this centerpiece of Iranian culture accessible to Western readers. Drawing on recent work in epic studies and oral poetics, Davidson considers analogies with Classical and medieval European narratives as she investigates the poem's social contexts. Exploring the Shahnama as an example of court poetry designed to glorify the idea of empire, Davidson identifies as a driving force of Ferdowsi's narrative a strong current of antagonism between king and hero. Ironically, she shows, it is the epic hero himself who poses the greatest threat to the concept of kingship that he is sworn to defend. Iran's contact with Europe in the nineteenth century produced largely imaginary ideas about European culture and literature. In a series of textual manoeuvres and cultural contestations, successive generations of Iranian intellectuals sought to recast the classical tradition in a mold at once modern and relevant to their concerns. In particular, Karimi proposes a revision of the view that sets the Modernist poet Nima Yushij as the single-handed inventor of 'New Poetry'. This view, he argues, has resulted in an exaggerated sense of the aesthetic gulf between the modernist poetry of Iran and classical Persian poetry. Through a number of close readings of works by Nima's predecessors, Karimi makes visible a century-old Persian poetic tradition with Nima as its culmination.

This volume deals with one of the most prominent Jewish poets of Iran, known as 'Emrānī (1454-1536 C.E.). The book consists of three parts. The first part studies 'Emrānī's time, life and work and analyzes in depth the poet's last major work entitled Ganj-nāme (The Book of Treasure). Ganj-nāme, which is closely modeled after compositions of classical Persian literature, is 'Emrānī's versified commentary of the ethical tractate of the Mishnah commonly known as Pirqey Abot (“The Chapters of the Fathers”). The second part of the book offers the English translation, annotation and source study of Ganj-nāme. The third and last part of the book provides a critical edition of Ganj-nāme.
