Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of Persia Now it is, I think, always desirable in the first instance to get a clear idea of the ground covered by a subject of which one proposes to treat. Modern, post-muhammadan, Persian literature - a literature covering a period Of about a thousand years - is what I propose to discuss this afternoon but I must Observe in passing that a comprehensive survey of the literature or literatures of Persia would include more than this. There are three older pre-muhammadan literatures well worthy of. Study which belong to Persia; and, though I shall not have time to discuss them to - day, I must at least mention them. It is possible to ride from north to south and from east to west, almost without crossing a river. Indeed from the Indus to the shatt-al-arab no important river reaches the sea. In the north the river, termed the Sufid Rud in its lower reaches, is the longest in Persia. In the south-west, the Karun is the only navigable river of Persia, and that for merely a short distance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King and Cobbler: A Romance of Ancient Persia Among all the cities of old, the ruins of which are now left to tell of the mighty age that has long since passed away, none exceeded in extent, in wealth, or in grandeur, Persepolis, the chief capital of ancient Persia. At the foot of a steep, rugged mountain, was extended a wide plain, watered by a goodly river. Upon all hands this plain was shut in by high cliffs of rock, looming darkly in the distance, leaving the level space some five-and-twenty miles in length, and upon this was the city built, occupying the whole vast area. The wealth of the royal palace almost exceeds belief. It was a vast structure, serving not only for the royal residence, but also for a citadel and bulwark. Its colonnade of massive pillars still stands, and is a fit object of wonder. These pillars are of gray marble and seventy feet high, and their capitals, which are of an order of architecture differing from any other then in use, are beautiful in the extreme. The interior of this kingly abode was literally cased with gold and precious stones, and to count or estimate the wealth there displayed, were a task beyond the ability of one man. And then other evidences of grandeur were built in the city, and upon all hands were to be seen sculptures and towers, and courts and monuments. And as though the vast plain gave not room enough for the ingenuity of the sculptors, the faces of the very rocks that formed the cliff wall of the city were cut and carved in a most elaborate and finished manner. Into the facts of the larger rocks were cut tombs and sepulchral chambers, with beautiful porticos richly sculptured from the solid cliff. Truly the king of Persia had wealth, for his capital contained within itself the wealth of a nation. And he had power, for thousands on thousands bowed down to do him homage, and princes and potentates acknowledged his authority. Next in importance among the palaces of Persepolis to that of the king was the palace of Rustem, one of the most powerful satraps, or governors, of the realm. Rustem was now past the meridian of life, but still strong and vigorous, and fond of all those manly sports which were the delight of the warrior race of that period. He was a favorite of the king, a friend to those who bowed to him, and sometimes generous and benevolent to the poor. He could be warm and ardent in his attachments, and he could love with his whole heart; but there was no principle, no moral obligation, felt by him. He was the slave of impulse, and the owner of a will that would not bend. Very slight causes would attract his friendship, and causes just as slight would arouse his anger and hate. Above all things else did he love to be honored and obeyed and flattered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Happenings in Persia I would, then, ask my Persian friends to believe that my criticism is actuated by no feeling of un friendliness, but Solely by a desire to present facts in their true colours. I have to acknowledge my great indebtedness to H. H. Hormoz Mirza for having kindly offered to read that portion of this book which had been written prior to my departure from Persia, and for having placed at my disposal his wide knowledge regarding events and conditions. The Opinions expressed are, however, my own, since he agreed with me that it would be out of place for a native of the country to attempt to influence the impression formed by a soj ourner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Struggle for Persia None of my predecessors (and they may be counted on the fingers) who have taken the almost impassable route between Eastern Russia (via Tabriz) to Teheran having thought fit to record their experiences, it devolves upon my unworthy self to narrate mine in this veritable "terra incognita." The interest lately awakened in England with reference to Persian affairs, together with the lamentable loss of British prestige and British influence, and the overwhelming power of Russia - as they appeared to me - must be my further excuse for bringing them to the notice of all lovers of king and country, in the earnest hope that means may be found to retrieve the paramount supremacy of England in a country where once it was without a rival. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Persia The uniformed natives of these countries, whose condi tion is much to be deplored, are not aware that the great Samuel Johnson has said, that Whatever raises the past, the distant, and the future, above the present, exalts us in the dignity of human beings which is an unanswerably' good reason for the preference given to mummies over every living object, however fascinating. The rage of the present day for mummies and other delectable reliques of antiquity has deluged Egypt with itinerant men of science and research, who have quite ex hansted that land of wonders and those who have lately visited it have been reduced, from actual want of other aliment, to the necessity of preying upon their predecessors, many of whom have been cruelly mangled, and some Wholly devoured. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps Into Persia If you desire consort, do not travel to Teheran! There is only one way to do the journey, and that is as quickly as possible. But barring discomforts, it is a journey of intense interest, and I hope that some account of it, of the lives Europeans used to lead in Teheran, and of the life there now, may not be without interest. I have spent much of the past six years in Teheran, and have done the long journey half a dozen times, always taking the route through Russia, across the Caspian Sea to Enzeli, to end with that most uncomfortable thing, a Persian drive of about two hundred and fifty miles. Book Woman and Her Saviour

Download or read book Woman and Her Saviour written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman and Her Saviour: In Persia Our Saviour bade his disciples gather up the fragments, that nothing be lost; and many who have known of Miss Fiske's fifteen years of labor for woman in Persia, have desired her to prepare for publication the facts now presented to the reader. The writer was one cf these; arid it was only when he found that she could not do it, that he attempted it, in accordance with her wishes, simply that these interesting records of divine grace might not be lost. The materials have been drawn from the letters and conversations of those familiar with the scenes described, and especially from Miss Fiske. In all cases, the language of others has been condensed, as much as is consistent with the truthful expression of their ideas; and, in the translation of the letters of Nestorians, it has not been deemed essential to follow slavishly every Syriac idiom, for, instead of these letters owing their interest, as some have supposed, to their translators, they may have sometimes rather suffered from renderings needlessly idiomatic.
