Download or read book Ancient History written by Charles Rollin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Rollin, a French historian and educator, took it upon himself to write compendiums of Ancient history. Rollin's Ancient History: History of the Persians is an in depth look at Persia through geography, politics, and history. The book begins exploring the "Physical History of Persia" which refers to the provinces of Persia. While exploring the Western, Eastern, and Central provinces, Rollin also goes into depth on specific places such as Gedrosia, Carmania, and Arachosia. Rollin also explores topical elements such as mountains, rivers, and lakes of note. In addition, he examines the climate of Persia and the multitude of things Persia produces. This physical history is a solid foundation for further exploration of Persia. The next section of the book explores political history. Rollins examines the power of Persian kings. He also discusses the Seven State Counselors, and administrative powers. In addition, he looks at both military power and priestly power in Persia. Rollin knows that understanding the political history of Persia helps the reader get a greater understanding of Persia as a whole. To increase the reader's knowledge of Persian politics, Rollin dedicates the next section to discussing specific Persian Kings and their reigns. Ultimately, it is the politics of Persia that truly interest Rollin and he dedicates the end of the book to discussing that and its importance. But while dynasties are ruled by kings and are powerful at one point in time, Rollin leaves the reader with a final thought: "In this age, power and empire are in the hands of one people; in the next, a nation unheard of before comes forth, and rudely plucks it from their hands. By whose direction do these things occur?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Persia From the Earliest Period to the Arab Conquest Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persia From the Earliest Period to the Arab Conquest The history of Persia, as generally understood, may be considered as a supplement to that of Assyria and Babylonia, the events that have made her most famous in antiquity having been achieved after the empire of the first had passed away, and the second had been subjugated by the Persians. The small province of Persis (in the Bible Paras, in the native inscriptions Parsa), whence the name of Persia is derived, was bounded on the north by Media, on the south by the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean, on the east by Caramania (Kerman), and on the west by Susiana. It was, indeed, nearly the same district as the modern Farsistan, the name of which is obviously derived from it; and in length and breadth not more than 450 and 250 miles respectively. Book Persia

Download or read book Persia written by Jeffrey Spier and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating study of Persia’s interactions and exchanges of influence with ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. The founding of the first Persian Empire by the Achaemenid king Cyrus the Great in the sixth century BCE established one of the greatest world powers of antiquity. Extending from the borders of Greece to northern India, Persia was seen by the Greeks as a vastly wealthy and powerful rival and often as an existential threat. When the Macedonian king Alexander the Great finally conquered the Achaemenid Empire in 330 BCE, Greek culture spread throughout the Near East, but local dynasties—first the Parthian (247 BCE–224 CE) and then the Sasanian (224–651 CE)—reestablished themselves. The rise of the Roman Empire as a world power quickly brought it, too, into conflict with Persia, despite the common trade that flowed through their territories. Persia addresses the political, intellectual, religious, and artistic relations between Persia, Greece, and Rome from the seventh century BCE to the Arab conquest of 651 CE. Essays by international scholars trace interactions and exchanges of influence. With more than three hundred images, this richly illustrated volume features sculpture, jewelry, silver luxury vessels, coins, gems, and inscriptions that reflect the Persian ideology of empire and its impact throughout Persia’s own diverse lands and the Greek and Roman spheres. This volume is published to accompany a major international exhibition presented at the Getty Villa from April 6 to August 8, 2022.

Book Women in Ancient Persia 559 331 BC

Download or read book Women in Ancient Persia 559 331 BC written by Maria Brosius and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Greek writers on Persian history give us a glimpse of the influential role played by some individual women at these courts, but these are sporadic and hardly reliable accounts of a few colourful femme fatales in the royal family, designed to show up the scandalous machinations of barbarian women gaining political control and causing the decline and effeminacy of the Persian kings. This book is the first to demonstrate the true importance of not only royal but non-royal women in Persia, with the benefit of contemporary Persian and Babylonian sources.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King and Cobbler: A Romance of Ancient Persia Among all the cities of old, the ruins of which are now left to tell of the mighty age that has long since passed away, none exceeded in extent, in wealth, or in grandeur, Persepolis, the chief capital of ancient Persia. At the foot of a steep, rugged mountain, was extended a wide plain, watered by a goodly river. Upon all hands this plain was shut in by high cliffs of rock, looming darkly in the distance, leaving the level space some five-and-twenty miles in length, and upon this was the city built, occupying the whole vast area. The wealth of the royal palace almost exceeds belief. It was a vast structure, serving not only for the royal residence, but also for a citadel and bulwark. Its colonnade of massive pillars still stands, and is a fit object of wonder. These pillars are of gray marble and seventy feet high, and their capitals, which are of an order of architecture differing from any other then in use, are beautiful in the extreme. The interior of this kingly abode was literally cased with gold and precious stones, and to count or estimate the wealth there displayed, were a task beyond the ability of one man. And then other evidences of grandeur were built in the city, and upon all hands were to be seen sculptures and towers, and courts and monuments. And as though the vast plain gave not room enough for the ingenuity of the sculptors, the faces of the very rocks that formed the cliff wall of the city were cut and carved in a most elaborate and finished manner. Into the facts of the larger rocks were cut tombs and sepulchral chambers, with beautiful porticos richly sculptured from the solid cliff. Truly the king of Persia had wealth, for his capital contained within itself the wealth of a nation. And he had power, for thousands on thousands bowed down to do him homage, and princes and potentates acknowledged his authority. Next in importance among the palaces of Persepolis to that of the king was the palace of Rustem, one of the most powerful satraps, or governors, of the realm. Rustem was now past the meridian of life, but still strong and vigorous, and fond of all those manly sports which were the delight of the warrior race of that period. He was a favorite of the king, a friend to those who bowed to him, and sometimes generous and benevolent to the poor. He could be warm and ardent in his attachments, and he could love with his whole heart; but there was no principle, no moral obligation, felt by him. He was the slave of impulse, and the owner of a will that would not bend. Very slight causes would attract his friendship, and causes just as slight would arouse his anger and hate. Above all things else did he love to be honored and obeyed and flattered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Ancient Persia written by Matt Waters and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Achaemenid Persian Empire, at its greatest territorial extent under Darius I (r.522–486 BCE), held sway over territory stretching from the Indus River Valley to southeastern Europe and from the western Himalayas to northeast Africa. In this book, Matt Waters gives a detailed historical overview of the Achaemenid period while considering the manifold interpretive problems historians face in constructing and understanding its history. This book offers a Persian perspective even when relying on Greek textual sources and archaeological evidence. Waters situates the story of the Achaemenid Persians in the context of their predecessors in the mid-first millennium BCE and through their successors after the Macedonian conquest, constructing a compelling narrative of how the empire retained its vitality for more than two hundred years (c.550–330 BCE) and left a massive imprint on Middle Eastern as well as Greek and European history.
