Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Essay by Immanuel Kant. Perpetual Peace is a 1795 essay by Immanuel Kant. This translation of Kant's essay on Perpetual Peace was undertaken by Miss Mary Campbell Smith at the suggestion of the late Professor Ritchie of St. Andrews, who had promised to write for it a preface, indicating the value of Kant's work in relation to recent discussions regarding the possibility of "making wars to cease." In view of the general interest which these discussions have aroused and of the vague thinking and aspiration which have too often characterised them, it seemed to Professor Ritchie that a translation of this wise and sagacious essay would be both opportune and valuable. His untimely death has prevented the fulfilment of his promise, and I have been asked, in his stead, to introduce the translator's work. This is, I think, the only complete translation into English of Kant's essay, including all the notes as well as the text, and the translator has added a full historical Introduction, along with numerous notes of her own, so as (in Professor Ritchie's words) "to meet the needs (1) of the student of Political[p. vi] Science who wishes to understand the relation of Kant's theories to those of Grotius, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau etc., and (2) of the general reader who wishes to understand the significance of Kant's proposals in connection with the ideals of Peace Congresses, and with the development of International Law from the end of the Middle Ages to the Hague Conference."

Book Perpetual Peace

Book excerpt: Perpetual Peace is an important essay by Immanuel Kant from 1795 which was originally published as Project for a Perpetual Peace. The original concept of perpetual peace is for peace to be a permanent fixture over a certain specific area or location. In modern times, the concept of world peace directly stems from this original idea of a perpetual peace. In this writing of Kant, he argues in favor of civil constitutions with Republican forms of government, world citizenship, free states, the abolishment of standing armies and for states not being able to use force to interfere with the constitutions or governments of another given state. This is an important work for those studying the idea of world peace and those interested in the writings of Immanuel Kant.

Download or read book Kant s Theory of Evil written by Pablo Muchnik and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kant's Theory of Evil: An Essay on the Dangers of Self-Love and the Aprioricity of History presents a novel interpretation and defense of Kant's theory of evil. Pablo Muchnik argues that this theory stems from Kant's attempt to reconcile two parallel lines of thought in his own writings: on the one hand, a philosophy of the history of Rousseauian inspiration and naturalistic tendencies; on the other, the meta-physical project of founding morality exclusively on a priori grounds. The syncretism of Kant's view, as exemplified by the resulting moral anthropology in Religion within the Limits of Mere Reason, explains its persistent allure and elusiveness among Kantian readers. Solving some of the most intractable problems surrounding Kant's position, Muchnik's reconstruction is designed to break the deadlock existing between contemporary rival schools of interpretation, torn between Kant's naturalistic tendencies and his moral individualism. This book will certainly influence the way we approach Kantian ethics and the problem of evil in general. Book jacket.

This book was released on 2006-01-30 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosophy of Immanuel Kant is the watershed of modern thought, which irrevocably changed the landscape of the field and prepared the way for all the significant philosophical movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This 2006 volume, which complements The Cambridge Companion to Kant, covers every aspect of Kant's philosophy, with a particular focus on his moral and political philosophy. It also provides detailed coverage of Kant's historical context and of the enormous impact and influence that his work has had on the subsequent history of philosophy. The bibliography also offers extensive and organized coverage of both classical and recent books on Kant. This volume thus provides the broadest and deepest introduction currently available on Kant and his place in modern philosophy, making accessible the philosophical enterprise of Kant to those coming to his work for the first time.
