Book excerpt: This scholarly text focuses on the role of U.S. federal agencies in radiation safety and the evolution of radiation protection regulations. It traces how the principles and practices of radiation protection have changed over time in response to scientific and political developments. The primary purpose is to provide a foundation to the historical background to provide adequate protection against the hazards of radiation to workers exposed in their jobs and to the general public. Portions of this text include: Controversy over regulating medical radiation, Regulating medical uses of radiation, Exploration of some radiation hazards, EPA's revised occupational standards, The Clean Air Act amendments, and more Related products: Other products produced by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission can be found here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/nuclear-regulatory-commission-nrc Nuclear Power & Radiation resources collection is available here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/catalog/nuclear-power-radiation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War II, the US Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) began mass-producing radioisotopes, sending out nearly 64,000 shipments of radioactive materials to scientists and physicians by 1955. Even as the atomic bomb became the focus of Cold War anxiety, radioisotopes represented the government’s efforts to harness the power of the atom for peace—advancing medicine, domestic energy, and foreign relations. In Life Atomic, Angela N. H. Creager tells the story of how these radioisotopes, which were simultaneously scientific tools and political icons, transformed biomedicine and ecology. Government-produced radioisotopes provided physicians with new tools for diagnosis and therapy, specifically cancer therapy, and enabled biologists to trace molecular transformations. Yet the government’s attempt to present radioisotopes as marvelous dividends of the atomic age was undercut in the 1950s by the fallout debates, as scientists and citizens recognized the hazards of low-level radiation. Creager reveals that growing consciousness of the danger of radioactivity did not reduce the demand for radioisotopes at hospitals and laboratories, but it did change their popular representation from a therapeutic agent to an environmental poison. She then demonstrates how, by the late twentieth century, public fear of radioactivity overshadowed any appreciation of the positive consequences of the AEC’s provision of radioisotopes for research and medicine.

Book Three Mile Island A Nuclear Crisis in Historical Perspective

Download or read book Three Mile Island A Nuclear Crisis in Historical Perspective written by J. Samuel Walker and published by Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents a bit of history about nuclear power that began in 1954 when the U.S. Congress signed the Atomic Energy Act, a law that made the development of nuclear power possible by allowing basic information about atomic energy for civilian applications to be available in hopes it would building an industry that could provide a new source of electrical power. The author explores the initial political, business, construction, reactor safety, and environmental elements with the debates to build nuclear plants within the United States as a source of energy then leads into regulation of nuclear power. This scholarly text, coupled with some black and white illustrations, provides some insights to other nuclear plants that were build within the United States and some reactor faults prior to Three Mile Island's accident. Majority of this book centers around Three Mile Island's accident, evacuation of employees, causes, political crisis aftermath at State and Federal levels, NRC (US Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and business community response, and the growing public concerns are covered. Book excerpt: This book traces the efforts of policy makers to find solutions to the complex issues for disposal of radioactive waste that has become a source of scientific inquiry, programmatic deadlock, and public controversy. The author's focus is on waste from the commercial applications of nuclear energy, not exclusively from nuclear power plants. Additionally, author, J. Samuel Walker, examines the early history of radioactive waste disposal at government installations that produced materials for nuclear weapons within this book. Book Radiation Exposure and Occupational Risks

Download or read book Radiation Exposure and Occupational Risks written by Eberhard Scherer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of radiation protection standards is to make the radiation workplace as safe as is humanly possible. The gradual evolution over the last 20 years has been towards a more precise definition of the limits for occupational exposure. These have been created not only in terms of short-term effects but also more importantly in terms of long-term risks involving such problems as the potential for carcinogenesis and genetic change. In the United States the National Committee for Radiation Protection has recom mended that 5 rems (50 mSv) should remain as the maximum permissible dose equiva lent for total body exposure. This would represent the sum of internal and external ex posure and should be regarded as the upper limit allowed. The community of radiation users is required to conduct its operations in such a man ner that the absolute value of the individual's dose equivalent in rems does not exceed his age in years. There should be additional limits for tissues and organs based on short term effects. Therefore, individual organs are limited to dose equivalents low enough to ensure that the dose threshold values are not exceeded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 28, 1979, the worst accident in the history of commercial nuclear power in the United States occurred at Three Mile Island. For five days, the citizens of central Pennsylvania and the entire world, amid growing alarm, followed the efforts of authorities to prevent the crippled plant from spewing dangerous quantities of radiation into the environment. This book is the first comprehensive, moment-by-moment account of the causes, context, and consequences of the Three Mile Island crisis. Walker captures the high human drama surrounding the accident, sets it in the context of the heated debate over nuclear power in the seventies, and analyzes the social, technical, and political issues it raised. He also looks at the aftermath of the accident on the surrounding area, including studies of its long-term health effects on the population.--From publisher description.
