Book Hog Pastures for the Southern States

Download or read book Hog Pastures for the Southern States written by Lyman Carrier and published by . This book was released on 1918 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Green forage is essential to the economical production of pork. A permanent pasture supplemented with quick-growing, heavy-yielding, temporary forage crops is most satisfactory. There should be on an average 1 acre of permanent pasture for each brood sow kept. Some of the heavy-yielding, quick-growing forage crops will add considerable feed to the quantity produced by a permanent pasture. There should be mature crops, such as corn, soy beans, peanuts, or velvet beans for finishing the hogs in the fall. Oats, rye and wheat give satisfactory winter grazing. Green forage alone is little better than a maintenance ration. Where rapid gains are desired, the hogs should have a liberal allowance of grain. The rule should be, all the grain they will eat without waste. Woven-wire hog fencing tacked to stakes makes the best temporary fence. Growing forage crops and grazing them off on the land is an efficient method of improving soils depleted in organic matter. The exercise obtained in grazing exerts a beneficial influence on the health of hogs."--P. 2.

Book Cooling Milk and Cream on the Farm

Download or read book Cooling Milk and Cream on the Farm written by J. A. Gamble and published by . This book was released on 1919 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dairymen lose thousands of dollars annually because of poorly cooled milk and cream. These losses occur because the milk or cram is returned by dealers to the farmers, and because of low-grade manufactured products which bring low prices. Every dairyman who produces and delivers a high grade of milk or cream raises the average quality of all milk and cream with which it is pooled, and as a result a better product reaches the consumer. Proper colling is just as important with cream as with milk, especially as cream usually is delivered less frequently and therefore has greater opportunity to undergo undesirable fermentations. Proper cooling is easily done with little additional equipment and labor. Natural ice can be had on the diary farms that produce 85 per cent of this country's milk and cream supply. Even where ice is not available, milk and cream, by better use of available cooling facilities may be cooled more effectively than at present."--Page 2

Book Sweet potato Storage

Download or read book Sweet potato Storage written by Arnold Phipps Yerkes and published by . This book was released on 1918 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The proper storage of sweet potatoes is one of the most important food-conservation measures that can be put into effect in the southern states. No perishable product produced in the South is as of great importance as the sweet potato, and none is so poorly handled. This bulletin describes in considerable detail the types of storage houses that have proved successful and the proper method of handling sweet potatoes from harvesting to marketing. For those growers who are not able to build storage houses, directions are given for saving the sweet-potato crop by using outdoor cellars and banks." -- p. 2.
