Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peripheral Concerns examines the influence of one "core" region of the ancient Near Eastern world--Egypt--on urban development in the southern Levant in the Early and Middle Bronze Ages, with emphasis on the relative stability and sustainability of this development in each era. The study utilizes a very broad scale "macro" approach to examine urban development using core-periphery theories, specifically in regard to southern Levantine-Egyptian interactions. While many studies examine urban development in both the Early Bronze Age and the Middle Bronze Age, few compare this phenomenon in the two periods. Likewise, there are few studies of urban development in the southern Levant that compare contemporary Egyptian policies in that region to those in Nubia, despite the fact that Egyptian activities linked the eastern Mediterranean, the Nile Valley, and Nubia into one interactive system. The broad chronological and geographic framework utilized in this study therefore allows for a new approach to urban development in the southern Levant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the peripheral can be incorporated into ethnographic research, and reflects on what it means to be on the periphery—ontologically and epistemologically. Starting from the premise that clarity and fixity as ideals of modernity prevent us from approaching that which cannot be easily captured and framed into scientific boundaries, the book argues for remaining on the boundary between the known and the unknown in order to surpass this ethnographic limit. It shows that peripherality is not only to be seen as a marginal condition, but rather as a form of theory-making and practice that incorporates reflexivity and experimentation.

Book Foreign Policy at the Periphery

Download or read book Foreign Policy at the Periphery written by Bevan Sewell and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As American interests assumed global proportions after 1945, policy makers were faced with the challenge of prioritizing various regions and determining the extent to which the United States was prepared to defend and support them. Superpowers and developing nations soon became inextricably linked and decolonizing states such as Vietnam, India, and Egypt assumed a central role in the ideological struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union. As the twentieth century came to an end, many of the challenges of the Cold War became even more complex as the Soviet Union collapsed and new threats arose. Featuring original essays by leading scholars, Foreign Policy at the Periphery examines relationships among new nations and the United States from the end of the Second World War through the global war on terror. Rather than reassessing familiar flashpoints of US foreign policy, the contributors explore neglected but significant developments such as the efforts of evangelical missionaries in the Congo, the 1958 stabilization agreement with Argentina, Henry Kissinger's policies toward Latin America during the 1970s, and the financing of terrorism in Libya via petrodollars. Blending new, internationalist approaches to diplomatic history with newly released archival materials, Foreign Policy at the Periphery brings together diverse strands of scholarship to address compelling issues in modern world history.

Book Peripheral Flows

    Book Details:
  • Author : Simone Fari
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2016-06-22
  • ISBN : 1443896527
  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book Peripheral Flows written by Simone Fari and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of the eleven contributions to this volume is to reconsider and re-assess the role of cores and peripheries in shaping modern socio-technical systems. From this perspective they explore a terrain of highly complex systems mainly operating on the so-called Western model: Railways, telegraphs, motor vehicles and airports were, in fact, all born in classic cores areas in the West and then spread out into the peripheries. The approach in itself is not new, but this volume has managed to bring out interestingly innovative elements and viewpoints. The contributors are not content with the traditional definitions of peripheries and flows, but tend to put them to the test, revise them and eventually offer critiques. The result is a tempering of the monolithic and traditional concept of a one-way transfer. No longer, therefore, a simple and linear act of adoption, but a recourse to adaptation – changes in meaning, use and perception. The volume is a starting point for future explorations on the subject of science and technology studies and takes part in a wider discussion of globalisation, global and transnational history.

Book The Routledge Research Companion to Border Studies

Download or read book The Routledge Research Companion to Border Studies written by Doris Wastl-Walter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, the functions and roles of borders have been continuously changing. They can only be understood in their context, shaped as they are by history, politics and power, as well as cultural and social issues. Borders are therefore complex spatial and social phenomena which are not static or invariable, but which are instead highly dynamic. This comprehensive volume brings together a multidisciplinary team of leading scholars to provide an authoritative, state-of-the-art review of all aspects of borders and border research. It is truly global in scope and, besides embracing the more traditional strands of the field including geopolitics, migration and territorial identities, it also takes in recently emerging topics such as the role of borders in a seemingly borderless world; creating neighbourhoods, and border enforcement in the post-9/11 era.

Book The Trouble with Doctors

Download or read book The Trouble with Doctors written by Dr. John Anderson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book arose from the authors knowledge of a small number of doctors who were not behaving in a professional or proper manner. As he read about them, he found he was astonished at the extent of some offenders. Any human being can have flaws in their character, personality disorders or mental illnesses, what if that person is your doctor? This book takes the reader on a journey from the colorful life of Geoffrey Edelsten through Medawar's The Strange Case of the Spotted Mice, a fertility specialist who used his own sperm to impregnate over 50 women without their knowledge to the lasting and devastating effects of the MMR vaccine debacle. The author suggests that a test needs to be devised to detect character flaws such as greed before they harm innocent people through fraud and deceit. As much a reference book as it is a celebration of the brave‘whistleblower’and witty commentary on human nature, capturing the imagination, leading the reader to wonder why people make the decisions they do. Anderson himself had a colorful life and a brilliant career, leaving an immeasurable legacy to medicine. His wish was that this book would prompt change, leading to enhanced integrity in the medical and scientific world.
