Download or read book Chemical Equilibrium written by William Guenther and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * The present work is designed to provide a practical introduction to aqueous equilibrium phenomena for both students and research workers in chemistry, biochemistry, geochemistry, and interdisciplin ary environmental fields. The pedagogical strategy I have adopted makes heavy use of detailed examples of problem solving from real cases arising both in laboratory research and in the study of systems occurring in nature. The procedure starts with mathematically complete equations that will provide valid solutions of equilibrium problems, instead of the traditional approach through approximate concentrations and idealized, infinite-dilution assumptions. There is repeated emphasis on the use of corrected, conditional equilibrium constants and on the checking of numerical results by substitution in complete equations and/or against graphs of species distributions. Graphical methods of calculation and display are used extensively because of their value in clarifying equilibria and in leading one quickly to valid numerical approximations. The coverage of solution equilibrium phenomena is not, however, exhaustively comprehensive. Rather, I have chosen to offer funda mental and rigorous examinations of homogeneous step-equilibria and their interactions with solubility and redox equilibria. Many examples are worked out in detail to demonstrate the use of equi librium calculations and diagrams in various fields of investigation.

Book Functional Group Chemistry

Download or read book Functional Group Chemistry written by James R. Hanson and published by Wiley-RSC. This book was released on 2002-05-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional Group Chemistry presents the chemistry of functional groups with an emphasis on patterns of reactivity, the consequences of the relative electronegativity of the atoms that constitute functional groups, the role of lone pairs and the stereochemistry of reactions at a particular group. The material is presented in four chapters. The first chapter describes some of the general principles that affect the reactivity of functional groups. The second chapter examines the chemistry of functional groups involving (sigma)- C-X bonds as in alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, amines and organometallic reagents. The third chapter covers the chemistry of both symmetrical and unsymmetrical (pi)-bonded functional groups, typified by alkenes and carbonyl groups. The final chapter concentrates on aromatic compounds. It is concerned with the interactions between an aromatic ring and functional groups that are attached to it, such as their effect on the orientation of aromatic substitution. Each chapter concludes with a series of problems. The chemistry of the functional groups is considered here with a mechanistic rationale. Students are encouraged to consider the reactivity of functional groups in terms of their regions of electron deficiency and excess, and hence to identify the sites at which nucleophiles and electrophiles might react.

Book Patai s 1992 Guide to the Chemistry of Functional Groups

Download or read book Patai s 1992 Guide to the Chemistry of Functional Groups written by Saul Patai and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1992-04-08 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patai’s 1992 Guide to the Chemistry of Functional Groups Saul Patai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel Ever since the publication of the first volume of ‘The Chemistry of Functional Groups’ in 1964, the Patai series has acted as an essential reference source to many researchers. By the end of 1991, the series consisted of 50 titles bound in 73 volumes, containing nearly 900 chapters written by over 1250 authors. The aim of this Guide, as was that of the previous edition, is to present sufficient material on each of the published chapters to allow the researcher to decide whether these chapters are relevant and useful for his or her purpose, and thus worth pursuing in full. For those who are familiar with only selected volumes from the series, the cross-referencing between complementary and related chapters from different volumes will be invaluable. The Guide is fully indexed by both subject and author thus making it an essential reference tool for all organic chemists.

Book Teaching Chemistry Around the World

Download or read book Teaching Chemistry Around the World written by Björn Risch and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As teachers we often tend to expect other countries to teach chemistry in much the same way as we do, but educational systems differ widely. At Bielefeld University we started a project to analyse the approach to chemical education in different countries from all over the world: Teaching Chemistry around the World. 25 countries have participated in the project. The resulting country studies are presented in this book. This book may be seen as a contribution to make the structure of chemistry teaching in numerous countries more transparent and to facilitate communication between these countries. Especially in the case of the school subject chemistry, which is very unpopular on the one hand and occupies an exceptional position on the other hand – due to its relevance to jobs and everyday life and most notably due to its importance for innovation capacity and problem solving – we have to learn from each others’ educational systems.
