Book Buying List of Books for Small Libraries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Buying List of Books for Small Libraries Classic Reprint written by Zaidee Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buying List of Books for Small Libraries As the following list is intended merely as an aid in buying, regular cataloging rules have not been followed. It should there fore not be used as a guide for the form of the author's name. When there is a choice, the best known form of the author's name or a well-known pseudonym is used. In this edition there is no change from the character of the first list. The same general arrangement is retained and in most cases the same subject headings used. Every class is thoroughly revised and while there is a slight increase in the number of titles in sociology, science, useful arts and amusements, it results in a net increase of but 78 titles in the entire list. The fewest changes are in the list of children's books. One or two good inexpensive editions of standard books are added and some of the strikingly good stories of the past two years included. In a small library it is not important to buy the very latest child's story. To buy the best must be the aim of a library in the purchase of its children's books. Download or read book Suggestive List of Books for a Small Library Vol 1 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestive List of Books for a Small Library, Vol. 1: Recommended by the League of Library Commissions; June, 1905; Books for Adults If a public library, supported by tax, is to receive and merit public support, it must have books that give pleasure. If it is to hold the esteem of the community, and so win continued support, the books must be wholesome and their reading must give sane views of life, good inspirations and reliable ln formation. Each new library must build up its own patronage by giving nu trained readers the best of the most popular books and then leading them gradually from good books to better. The reading habit must precede thehabit of studying, and the librarian in a small town should be well satisfied, if, in the first two years of the work, she can get the masses to come to her library habitually to get books to read for pleasure, and if she has a few stu dents. A few books for reference and a few more books for students should then be added and more care taken to develop students from readers. The following selection from a New York state circular on Standard for public libraries is worth consideration. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from And There Was Light, 1931-1932, Vol. 1 There are innumerable ink-print literary journals which review cur rent books but there has been no braille periodical, heretofore, intend ed principally for the reviewing of new embossed books for the blind. The steadily growing number of books in braille has created a need for a literary journal for those who read by touch. To meet this need, the American Braille Press and the Henry F. Homes Fund of the New York Public Library are cooperating in the publication of a new monthly magazine in braille - the first of its kind - devoted to reviews of new books, biographies of contemporary writers, and essays on literature. The periodical is edited by Ln cille A. Goldthwaite, Librarian of the Department for the Blind in the New York Public Library. It is distributed free of charge, except for a small registration fee, to blind readers throughout the world. There will be approximately 64 pages in each issue. Although the first regular issue will not appear until January, 1932, copies of a sample edition are now being distributed. Download or read book Cataloging for Small Libraries Classic Reprint written by Theresa Hitchler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cataloging for Small Libraries The books of every library, no matter how small it may he, should be classified, preferably according to some well known system, like the Dewey Decimal classification, for example. It always saves time, confusion, and money in the long run, if a library is started on a proper basis. You may think you can do without this and that until some future time, but you will find that it pays in the end to get and to do the needful things in the very beginning. The time comes but too quickly when an imperfect, makeshift system overpowers you. DO not postpone too freely and too readily. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graded and Annotated Catalog of Books in the Public Library of the District of Columbia, for Use in the Schools of the City The Public Library of the District of Columbia furnishes to the Public Schools of the city, through the school stations and through the cooperation of the grade teachers, 'many thousands of books during the school year. It is more and more forced on the attention of the library that numerically only a small portion of the children of Washington are being satisfactorily reached by the main library and its one branch. It is to the schools, reaching every locality, to which the library looks for help in solving the problem. A book in the hands of a teacher and recommended by her carries great weight. There fore by sending small libraries to all of the schools, more par ticularly the distant ones, we hope to reach the right child with the right book at the right time. Any teacher may select or request the library to select one book for each child in her class or any number of books up to fifty, which will be sent to her by the library and called for at the end of two months, after notification, unless she desires to retain them for a longer period. For the convenience of the teachers and to advise them of the material to be had for supplementary work and for pleasurable reading this graded and annotated catalog of books has been prepared. It has been arranged by subject that the material on the work being studied may be readily found. There is also an author index. Many of the books listed in a certain grade will be found useful in a lower or higher grade, the grading being only suggestive. Book On the Classification of Books

Download or read book On the Classification of Books written by Lloyd Pearsall Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Classification of Books: A Paper Read Before the American Library Association, May, 1882 The classification is intended to be permanent only so far as the six main classes A E I O U and Y, and their sub-classes a, b, c, d, e, etc., are concerned. In its details it is Open to modification to suit the needs of libraries devoted mainly to the collection of one or a few classes of books. As the volumes multiply on the shelves, it is Obvious that the divisions 1, 2, 3, 4, etc., can be added to indefinitely, - by each librarian for himself - without deranging the system. Moreover, the divisions can themselves be subdivided by supplying arbitrary marks. For example, under Zoology I have made but one subdivision, that of Birds (116 whereas an Academy of Natural Sciences might well find it expedient to distribute their works on the animal kingdom in accordance with the elaborate plan set forth' in Agassiz's Essay on Classification. On the other hand, a small library may content itself with the classes and sub-classes marked by letters only, or even with the classes A E I O U Yalone. It is to he remarked in passing that, by this arrangement, whatever improvements may be made from time to time in the details of the system, the books have always a relative, and not a fixed location on the shelves, so that they may be moved from shelf to shelf, from case to case, and from building to building, without altering the shelf marks. The system is available, not only for the arrangement of books on the shelves, but also for their classification in a subject catalogue. Indeed, the shelf lists them selves form - when properly made - a subject catalogue, which may be sent Off to the printer as soon as there is money enough to pay for setting them Up in type. It is true that most of the ends of a subject catalogue may be gained by the modern dic tionary catalogue - combining authors and subjects in one alphabet - which it is to the credit Of Mr. Poole to have invented, and Of Messrs. Cutter, Noyes, and others to have developed; but, nevertheless, to my mind, the ideal printed catalogue is a classified one, with a cepious alphabetical index. Suppose that the British Museum had such a printed catalogue to-day, how much would the usefulness of that great Institution be enhanced! This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Library of Cincinnati, 1802-1808-1908 At the expiration of that period, two or three persons succeeded in obtaining the papers which the committee had prepared the year before and transmitted them to the Legislature, which en acted a law of incorporation January 2, 1813. In this act seven directors were named, to hold their places until the annual election in the ensuing March. Still public enthusiasm at the prospect of having a public library was not at a white heat. No election was ordered in March and in a call for a meeting printed in Liberty Hall of May 25, to be held next day, the subscribers are urged to come forward and discharge their subscriptions without further delay and the directors express a regret that little attention had been given to pre vious notices and indulge a hope that there will be no further cause of complaint. The subscriptions were payable either in cash or in books. William Corry was the librarian. The original directors continued, by common consent, in the exercise of their functions until the spring of 1814, when the first election was held, and on April 16, the library, containing three hundred volumes, apparently all received in lieu of cash, was opened. To effect an immedi ate increase in this diminutive collection was re garded as so desirable that, in addition to a press ing call for the unpaid subscriptions, the directors borrowed small sums of money on a credit of three years without interest, and purchased books on the same terms. With the money borrowed and collected from the subscribers or received from further sales of stock, there was made in the ensuing summer, at Philadelphia, the first purchase of books, amounting to about two hun dred and fifty volumes. Book A Library Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Library Primer Classic Reprint written by John Cotton Dana and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Library Primer A library primer was published in the first six numbers of Public Libraries in 1896. It was quite largely made up of extracts from an article by Dr. V.F. Poole on The organization and management of public libraries, which formed part of the report on Public libraries in the U.S., published by the U.S. Bureau of education in 1876; from W. I. Fletcher's Public libraries in America; from Mary W.Plummer's Hints to small libraries; and from papers in the Library journal and A. L.A. proceedings. At the request of a number of people interested I have revised, rewritten, and extended the original draft for publication in book form. Additional material has been taken from many sources. I have tried to give credit in good measure. The prevailing tendency among librarians is to share ideas, to give to one another the benefit of all their suggestions and experiences. The result is a large fund of library knowledge which is common property. From this fund most of this book is taken. The Library Primer is what its name implies. It does not try to be exhaustive in any part of the field. It tries to open up the subject of library management for the small library, and to show how large it is and how much librarians have yet to learn and to do.
