Book Working Memory Capacity

Download or read book Working Memory Capacity written by Nelson Cowan and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of one's memory "filling up" is a humorous misconception of how memory in general is thought to work; it actually has no capacity limit. However, the idea of a "full brain" makes more sense with reference to working memory, which is the limited amount of information a person can hold temporarily in an especially accessible form for use in the completion of almost any challenging cognitive task. This groundbreaking book explains the evidence supporting Cowan's theoretical proposal about working memory capacity, and compares it to competing perspectives. Cognitive psychologists profoundly disagree on how working memory is limited: whether by the number of units that can be retained (and, if so, what kind of units and how many), the types of interfering material, the time that has elapsed, some combination of these mechanisms, or none of them. The book assesses these hypotheses and examines explanations of why capacity limits occur, including vivid biological, cognitive, and evolutionary accounts. The book concludes with a discussion of the practical importance of capacity limits in daily life. This 10th anniversary Classic Edition will continue to be accessible to a wide range of readers and serve as an invaluable reference for all memory researchers.

Book Implicit and Explicit Mental Processes

Download or read book Implicit and Explicit Mental Processes written by Kim Kirsner and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for synthesis in the domain of implicit processes was the motivation behind this book. Two major questions sparked its development: Is there one implicit process or processing principle, or are there many? Are implicit memory, learning, and expertise; skill acquisition; and automatic detection simply different facets of one general principle or process, or are they distinct processes performing very different functions? This book has been designed to cast light on this issue. Because it is impossible to make sense of implicit processes without taking into account their explicit counterparts, consideration is also given to explicit memory, learning, and expertise; and controlled processing. The chapter authors consider principles, processes, and models which stand above a wealth of data collected to evaluate models designed specifically to account for data from a specific paradigm, or even more narrowly, from a specific experimental task. The motivation behind this approach is the proposition that modeling is possible for a much broader data domain, even though there may be some cost where specific tasks are concerned. The aim of this book is to treat synthesis as the objective, and to approach this objective by collecting and discussing phenomena which--although they are drawn from diverse areas of psychological science--touch a single issue concerning the distinction between explicit and implicit processes.

Book Individual Differences in Working Memory and Levels of Processing

Download or read book Individual Differences in Working Memory and Levels of Processing written by David A. Illingworth and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working memory (i.e., the capacity to maintain, manipulate, and retrieve multiple bundles of information) has been shown to be independent of, albeit correlated with, intelligence (g), and is variable across the population. As a result, the question has arisen as to what, if anything, accounts for differences in working memory capacity (WMC). Research addressing this question has had minimal success testing for differences in aptitude for encoding and retrieving between samples of individuals with high and low WMC. Prior research has been further limited by difficulties with empirically discriminating encoding and retrieval, as well as confusion about what factors related to encoding result in enhanced (or diminished) performance on measures of WMC. This study explored the relationship between encoding and WMC by controlling for depth of processing in a word recall paradigm (i.e., levels-of-processing task) that included a near-span length memory load in some conditions. The anticipated interaction between levels-of-processing and memory load was found, suggesting that deep processing is not susceptible to the effects of increased memory load in the same way memory loads affect lower domains of processing. All main effects were qualified by an interaction between WMC, memory load, and level-of-processing. Differences in patterns of performance between high and low WMC groups were only detectable at the deepest level of processing.

Book Implicit Memory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Graf
  • Publisher : Psychology Press
  • Release : 2013-12-02
  • ISBN : 1317782321
  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book Implicit Memory written by Peter Graf and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immense growth of research on implicit and explicit memory is making it difficult to keep up with new methods and findings, to gauge the implications of new discoveries, and to ferret out new directions in research and theory development. The present volume provides a status report of work on implicit and explicit memory in the three areas that have contributed the bulk of what is known about this domain -- cognitive psychology, lifespan developmental psychology, and neuropsychology. Highlighting developments in methods, critical findings, and theoretical positions, this volume outlines promising new research directions. By so doing, it provides the reader with a multi-disciplinary perspective on implicit and explicit memory, and thereby enables a cross- fertilization of ideas and research. The chapters that make up this volume were written by experts on the topic of implicit and explicit memory. These contributors were asked to write for a broad audience -- for their colleagues from allied disciplines, for new researchers, for advanced undergraduate and graduate students -- to help them gain a comprehensive overview of the mushrooming research on this topic, grasp the most fundamental empirical and theoretical issues, and focus on new research directions.

Book Rethinking Implicit Memory

Download or read book Rethinking Implicit Memory written by Jeffrey S. Bowers and published by Psychology. This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implicit memory refers to a change in task performance due to an earlier experience that is not consciously remembered. The topic of implicit memory has been studied from two quite different perspectives for the past 20 years. On the one hand, researchers interested in memory have set out to characterize the memory system (or systems) underlying implicit memory, and see how they relate to those underlying other forms of memory. The alternative framework has considered implicit memory as a by-product of perceptual, conceptual, or motor systems that learn. That is, on this view the systems that support implicit memory are heavily constrained by pressures other than memory per se. Both approaches have yielded results that have been valuable in helping us to understand the nature of implicit memory, but studied somewhat in isolation and with little collaboration. This volume is unique in explicitly contrasting these approaches, bringing together world class scientists from both camps in an attempt to forge a new approach to understanding one of the most exciting and important issues in psychology and neuroscience. Written for postgraduate students and researchers in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, this is a book that will have an important influence on the direction that future research in this field takes.

Book Performance on Perceptual structural Priming Tasks in Patients with Probable Alzheimer s Disease AD

Download or read book Performance on Perceptual structural Priming Tasks in Patients with Probable Alzheimer s Disease AD written by Lauren Elyse Norton and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While AD patients typically demonstrate impairment on "conceptually-driven" priming tasks, discrepant findings have emerged with regard to their performance on "data-driven," or perceptual, priming tasks. In an attempt to explain this variable priming performance, Gabrieli et al. (1994) proposed that implicit memory tasks may be driven by two separate systems: one mediating memory for "lexical-semantic" information and the other mediating memory for "perceptual-structural" material. The performance of AD patients on a series of perceptual priming tasks was examined. First, the possibility was addressed that findings of intact perceptual priming in AD may be partially explained by inadequate task sensitivity. Thus, within all experiments, (1) a finer measure of priming performance was used (e.g., reaction times) and (2) the test materials covered a range of difficulty. Further, experiments 2 and 3 addressed the need to evaluate perceptual priming using test materials that require little to no lexical or semantic processing. Participants were 15 AD patients and 15 age-matched normal control subjects (NCs). In experiment 1, a picture fragment identification task was administered. Findings revealed that the AD patients showed impaired priming relative to the NCs. Within experiment 2, two separate priming tasks were administered, one requiring the speeded copying of words and the other requiring the copying of patterns. Findings revealed no group difference in priming within either task, even when baseline differences in copying speed were statistically accounted for. Experiment 3 compared performance on two repetition priming tasks requiring that participants make speeded decisions about whether two stimuli were the same or different. One of the tasks used words as test stimuli while the other used meaningless objects. Findings revealed that the AD patients were significantly impaired relative to the NCs on the object, but not the word, priming task. Follow-up analyses within all three experiments revealed differential effects of item difficulty on priming performance. The current findings of impaired perceptual priming in AD in two out of five tasks do not support Gabrieli's multiple memory systems view. Degree of task sensitivity appears to influence the appearance of impaired priming performance in AD.
