Book excerpt: Despite the growing popularity of the crack and seat technique, little guidance is available for use in evaluating and designing overlays for cracked and seated airfield pavements. Towards solving this problem, a case study was undertaken to compare in-situ characteristics and overlay requirements of three different pavement sections at Suffolk Municipal Airport, Virginia. Nondestructive testing was used to determine the in-situ pavement properties and visual surveys were conducted to assess the condition rating of the pavements. The results of the NDT testing program were used to predict and compare the PCC layer moduli and to design AC overlays. The results of the study indicate that: (1) while the use of the crack and seat technique appears to be effective, reflective cracking is not eliminated: (2) the strength of the PCC layer is significantly reduced after cracking and seating and hence, thicker AC overlays are required and (3) a greater degree of cracking before placing the overlay would have been helpful. The uses of a modified FAA flexible pavement procedure for the design of AC overlays is recommended as an interim procedure. NDT testing as a construction quality control device during breaking of the PCC is also recommended.

Book excerpt: The mechanistic evaluation of pavement utilizing full-scale test data is an important component to the study of pavement behavior. This study focuses on the use of concrete strain gages (CSG) and crack location data to evaluate the effect of localized cracking on the stress-based load transfer efficiency (LTE (S)) of transverse doweled pavement joints. Concrete strain gage data generated from the full-scale testing carried out by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at the National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF) has been analyzed in this study. Load transfer efficiency was determined from paired concrete strain gages for the test vehicle moving in opposite directions at two specific locations, resulting in four distinct cases of LTE (S). It was found that LTE (S) varies as loading progresses on the test sections, especially after cracking near the joint has occurred on the slabs. The design constant of 25 % LTE (S) appears to be reasonably conservative before cracking occurs at the joint but overestimates joint LTE (S) thereafter. Additionally, peak strains from gages located at the joint can be used to evaluate the behavior of LTE (S) during the formation of cracks on the slab, in particular the case where the cracks have formed close to the doweled joint but are not yet visible on the surface.

Book excerpt: A field survey of steel fiber-reinforced concrete airfield pavements found the most serious performance problem to be permanent, early age curl of slabs and associated cracking. An examination of possible causes of this curl indicates it is probably due to the use of large slabs and thin sections. This study recommends slab sizes which should minimize this problem in the future. Other identified performance problems unique to this type pavement include loose surface fibers and nonfunctioning contraction joints. The design criteria for fiber-reinforced concrete were reviewed, and new criteria are proposed that are compatible with the Corps of Engineers change in portland cement concrete design criteria. A new method of overlay design was also proposed.
