Book Energy Efficient Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Energy Efficient Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Rab Nawaz Jadoon and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor network is a network of spatially distributed nodes to monitor certain application specific data. It consists of large number of sensor nodes with one or more base stations. The data is communicated from sensor nodes to the base station either directly or in multihop fashion. Routing is a key challenge in sensor networks, because nodes in the networks are constrained by energy, processing power, and memory. Such motivation drives motivation to design energy efficient routing protocols for sensor networks to prolong network lifetime. In this study i proposed a new multihop routing algorithm named energy efficient protocol using ring zone model (EEPRM). The protocol is simple and does routing decisions based on remaining energy of nodes, and does location based routing without the need for the nodes to know their positions.Simulation-based evaluation of EEPRM in OMNET++ conducted and the protocol is compared against well known protocols including An Address Light Integrated MAC and Routing Protocol for WSN, Flooding and AODV.Simulation results show that EEPRM outperforms AIMRP, AODV, and Flooding in terms of end to end delay, average hop count, and energy efficiency

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks are expected to find wide applicability and increasing deployment in coming years, as they enable reliable monitoring and analysis of the environment. Users of such a system will expect to get a real time warning when time-critical situations occur in the network and also to be able to retrieve any required information by issuing queries to the network. In this thesis, we propose a formal classification of sensor networks, based on their mode of functioning, as proactive and reactive networks. In proactive networks data is collected at pre-specified, fixed intervals while reactive strategy requires the nodes to respond immediately ton changes in the relevant parameters of interest. We are able to combine the best features of proactive and reactive networks while minimizing their limitations to create a new type of network called a Hybrid network which not only reacts to time-critical situations, but also gives an overall picture of the network at periodic intervals in a very energy efficient manner. We introduce two new energy efficient protocols, TEEN (Threshold-sensitive Energy Efficient sensor Network protocol) for reactive networks and APTEEN (Adaptive Periodic Threshold-sensitive Energy Efficient sensor Network protocol) for hybrid networks. We have also proposed a third protocol for routing queries in hybrid networks. This protocol provides the user, flexibility to request either past, present or future data from the network in the form of historical, one-time and persistent queries respectively. We have also analytically determined the delay incurred in handling the various types of queries. To our knowledge, such an analytical modeling has been done for the first time for sensor network queries. These three protocols offer versatility to the users while consuming energy very efficiently by minimizing non-critical data transmissions. We evaluated the performance of these protocols for a simple temperature sensing application with a Poisson arrival rate for queries. In terms of energy efficiency, these protocols have been observed to outperform existing conventional warehousing sensor network protocols.

Book Improvised Energy Efficient Routing Protocol based on Ant Colony Optimization ACO for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Improvised Energy Efficient Routing Protocol based on Ant Colony Optimization ACO for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Anand Nayyar and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, , course: Ph.D Computer Science, language: English, abstract: Routing and Energy Efficiency is regarded as highly challenging area of Sensor networks. Significant advancements in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) opens doors for wide implementation in real-time applications like Industrial Monitoring, Smart Cities development, Underwater monitoring operations, tracking objects and many more. Energy Efficient routing is regarded as the most challenging task. Sensor networks mostly operate in complex and dynamic environments and routing becomes tedious task to maintain as the network size increases. Lots of routing protocols- Reactive, Proactive and Hybrid are proposed by researchers but every protocol faces some limitations in terms of energy, routing, packet delivery ratio and security. Therefore, to overcome all the routing issues, the trend has shifted to Biological based Algorithms like Swarm Intelligence based techniques. Ant Colony Optimization based routing protocols have demonstrated exceptional results in terms of performance when applied to WSN routing. This thesis outlines routing protocols in sensor networks, highlight the concept of Swarm Intelligence and presents various Ant Colony Optimization based routing protocols for sensor networks. In addition to this, we present Ant Colony based Energy Efficient routing protocol (IEEMARP = Improvised Energy Efficient Multipath Ant Based Routing Protocol) for sensor networks. The proposed protocol takes into consideration various performance metrics like Packet Delivery Ratio, Throughput, Energy Efficiency, Routing Overhead and End-to-End delay. Proposed protocol is simulated and tested using NS-2.35 simulator. Simulation based results stated that IEEMARP routing protocol is overall 16% more efficient in terms of Packet delivery ratio, Energy Efficiency, Throughput, Routing Overhead and End-to-End delay as compared to other ACO based routing protocols. In addition to this, IEEMARP is highly reliable protocol to ensure timely delivery with acknowledgement packet exchange between source node to sink node and vice versa and also combats the issue of congestion and packet dropping to large extent.

Book Clustering and Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Clustering and Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Riham Elhabyan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we propose a suite of Evolutionary Algorithms (EA)-based protocols to solve the problems of clustering and routing in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). At the beginning, the problem of the Cluster Heads (CHs) selection in WSNs is formulated as a single-objective optimization problem. A centralized weighted-sum multi-objective optimization protocol is proposed to find the optimal set of CHs. The proposed protocol finds a predetermined number of CHs in such way that they form one-hop clusters. The goal of the proposed protocol is to enhance the network's energy efficiency, data delivery reliability and the protocol's scalability. The formulated problem has been solved using three evolutionary approaches: Genetic Algorithms (GA), Differential Evolution (DE) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and we assessed each of their performance. Then, a PSO-based hierarchical clustering protocol that forms two-hop clusters is proposed to investigate the effect of the number of CHs on network's energy efficiency. This protocol enhances the WSN's energy efficiency by setting an upper bound on the number of CHs and trying to minimize the number of CHs compared to that upper bound. It also maximizes the protocol's scalability by using two-hop communication between the sensor nodes and their respective CHs. Then, a centralized weighted-sum PSO-based protocol is proposed for finding the optimal inter-cluster routing tree that connects the CHs to the Base Station (BS). This protocol is appropriate when the CHs are predetermined in advance. The proposed protocol uses a particle encoding scheme and defines an objective function to find the optimal routing tree. The objective function is used to build the trade-off between the energy-efficiency and data delivery reliability of the constructed tree. Finally, a centralized multi-objective Pareto-optimization approach is adapted to find the optimal network configuration that includes both the optimal set of CHs and the optimal routing tree. A new individual encoding scheme that represents a joint solution for both the clustering and routing problems in WSNs is proposed. The proposed protocol uses a variable number of CHs, and its objective is to assign each network node to its respective CH and each CH to its respective next hop. The joint problem of clustering and routing in WSNs is formulated as a multi-objective minimization problem with a variable number of CHs, aiming at determining an energy efficient, reliable (in terms of data delivery) and scalable clustering and routing scheme. The formulated problem has been solved using two state-of-the-art Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEA), and their performance has been compared. The proposed protocols were developed under realistic network settings. No assumptions were made about the nodes' location awareness or transmission range capabilities. The proposed protocols were tested using a realistic energy consumption model that is based on the characteristics of the Chipcon CC2420 radio transceiver data sheet. Extensive simulations on 50 homogeneous and heterogeneous WSN models were evaluated and compared against well-known cluster-based sensor network protocols.

Book Energy efficient Routing Algorithms in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Energy efficient Routing Algorithms in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Nguyen Thanh Tung and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depending on the type of sensor network, routing protocols can be grouped into two main categories: hierarchical-based routing for MWSNs and multi-hop routing for WASNs. In hierarchical-based routing, there are two main approaches to prolong the lifetime of MWSNs: cluster-based routing and chain-based routing. To study the cluster-based routing, some very simple network topologies are analyzed first. From the analysis, it is shown that the energy optimization process can be formulated as integer linear programming problems. Several methods are then presented to obtain the optimal results from the formulations. As these problems are proven to be NP-hard, heuristic algorithms are proposed to obtain approximate solutions. From the simulation results, solutions are derived that are very close to the optimal solutions. In chain-based routing, sensor nodes form a chain to gather data, and a node is elected to deliver the data to a base station. It is shown by analysis that the equal selection of sensor nodes as the elected cluster-head (CH) will not give the optimal lifetime. The energy efficiency can be significantly improved by optimizing the selection of each sensor node as a CH. Therefore, a new model is proposed to compute the frequency of each sensor node being selected as the CH. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the system lifetime. As the problem of building an optimal chain is NP-complete, a bounded model is proposed to predict the upper bounds of the lifetime. Using the model, it is shown that our proposed chain-based scheme performance is very close to the bounds. At the end of the study for the hierarchical-based routing, the performances of the best cluster-based routing method and the best chain-based routing method are compared. Simulation results show that they perform similarly. In multi-hop routing, we show that locating a path that maximizes the minimum remaining energy of sensor nodes is actually an NP-complete problem. Therefore, in the routing, there is no polynomial time for the problem, and hence heuristic algorithms are proposed. In order to overcome the problem of the existence of the reception energy of neighbouring nodes, we then propose two methods to prolong the lifetime: inserting the remaining energy of nodes into routing formulas and using a broadcast scheme to eliminate the reception energy. In summary, in this research, a number of energy-efficient routing protocls in MWSNs and WASNs are proposed. These proposed methods significantly improve the lifetime of these networks.

Book Performance Evaluation of Clustering Algorithms in Wireless Sensor Networks WSN Energy Efficiency of S Web and LEACH

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Clustering Algorithms in Wireless Sensor Networks WSN Energy Efficiency of S Web and LEACH written by Sahil Sholla and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, grade: -, , course: Master of Technology, language: English, abstract: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are highly integrated technologies applying sensors, microcontrollers and wireless networks technologies. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a promising technology that has a large spectrum of applications such as, battlefield reconnaissance, border protection and security surveillance, preparing forecasts, severe environment detection, volcano monitoring, disaster management. WSNs operate unattended in harsh environments with limited energy supplies that can’t be practically changed or recharged. Thus energy efficiency is a critical design issue which must be addressed. Clustering plays an effective role in judicious use of dwindling energy resources of the deployed sensor nodes. Nodes are grouped into clusters and a specific designated node, called the cluster head is responsible for collecting data from the nodes in its cluster, aggregating them and sending to the BS, where data can be retrieved later. Besides energy efficiency, clustering has many other advantages like reduced routing overhead, conservation of communication bandwidth, stabilized network topology, network stability etc In this research, we study the energy efficiency of two clustering algorithms, S-Web and LEACH and compare them for network lifetime. Simulation results show that the S-Web clustering mechanism achieves a noticeable improvement in the network lifetime.

Book Mobile Wireless and Sensor Networks

Download or read book Mobile Wireless and Sensor Networks written by Amine Dahane and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless networking covers a variety of topics involving many challenges. The main concern of clustering approaches for mobile wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to prolong the battery life of the individual sensors and the network lifetime. For a successful clustering approach, the need of a powerful mechanism to safely elect a cluster head remains a challenging task in many research works that take into account the mobility of the network. In Mobile, Wireless and Sensor Networks: A Clustering Algorithm for Energy Efficiency and Safety, the authors use an approach based on computing of the weight of each node in the network as the proposed technique to deal with this problem. They present a virtual laboratory platform (VLP) of baptized mercury, allowing students and researchers to make practical work (PW) on different aspects of mobile wireless sensor networks. The authors’ choice of WSNs is motivated mainly by the use of real experiments needed in most college courses on WSNs. These usual experiments, however, require an expensive investment and many nodes in the classroom. The platform presented here aims at showing the feasibility, the flexibility, and the reduced cost using the authors’ approach. The authors demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms that contribute to the familiarization of the learners in the field of WSNs. The book will be a valuable resource for students in networking studies as well as for faculty and researchers in this area.

Book Wireless Sensor Networks Routing Protocol Overview

Download or read book Wireless Sensor Networks Routing Protocol Overview written by Madhumathy Perumal and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, , language: English, abstract: Sensor nodes have restricted storage, computational and energy resources, these restrictions place a limit on the types of deployable routing mechanisms. Routing protocol disseminates information that enables the sensor nodes to select routes to communicate with other nodes on the network and the choice of the route is determined by the routing algorithms. Thus the routing protocol helps the nodes to gain knowledge about the topology of the network to which it is attached directly. There are mainly two types of routing processes: one is static routing and the other is dynamic routing. In a static routing, the routing tables are set up in a static manner in the nodes. The network routes for the packet are initially set between the nodes. However, if any node on the specified route fails, the data may not reach the destination. In a dynamic routing, routing tables in the routers often change whenever the possible routes change. Dynamic routing is more suitable as the nodes in WSNs may frequently change their position and die at any moment. The routing protocols are classified into single hop and multi hop routing. In a single hop routing, sensor node directly communicates with the sink to share the gathered information. Energy consumption is high in the network using single hop protocol. In multi hop routing, data is routed through the intermediate nodes to the base station. Each node transfers sensed data to the immediate node which in turn transfers the data to the next immediate node and finally the data reaches the base station. Energy consumption in this kind of routing protocol is less and thus the lifetime of the nodes is high. The major challenge to the efficient operation of wireless sensor network lies in its ability to deliver the sensed information from the nodes to the sink within the specific time duration without the loss of data packets with high security. The sensor nodes depend on the battery source for their operation which has limited capacity. Thus the energy resource of the sensor nodes has to be used efficiently in order to increase the operational lifetime of the network.
