Book excerpt: ABSTRACT : Mobile wireless ad hoc networks represent an important tool and technology to provide data communication in places where wired networks are not available. An ad hoc network is composed of mobile nodes without any infrastructure. Mobile nodes self organize themselves to form a network over radio links. Multicasting, which is the transmission of packets or data between a single sender and multiple receivers on a network, is used as a mode of transmitting information between these mobile nodes. In an ad hoc network, the benefits of using multicasting is that it is more bandwidth efficient than unicasting. In this thesis, a survey on some existing experimental studies and the performance metrics measured have been mentioned. Secondly, a prototype application-layer test bed program is implemented to investigate routing and how data is transmitted in wireless ad hoc networks. Thirdly, various experiments were performed in the indoor and outdoor environment varying distances and data sizes of packets. The results of this study show the actual performance of mobile wireless networks putting into consideration all natural effects that generally affect the wireless networks.

Book excerpt: Ad hoc networks, which include a variety of autonomous networks for specific purposes, promise a broad range of civilian, commercial, and military applications. These networks were originally envisioned as collections of autonomous mobile or stationary nodes that dynamically auto-configure themselves into a wireless network without relying on any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. With the significant advances in the last decade, the concept of ad hoc networks now covers an even broader scope, referring to the many types of autonomous wireless networks designed and deployed for a specific task or function, such as wireless sensor networks, vehicular networks, home networks, and so on. In contrast to the traditional wireless networking paradigm, such networks are all characterized by sporadic connections, highly error-prone communications, distributed autonomous operation, and fragile multi-hop relay paths. The new wireless networking paradigm necessitates reexamination of many established concepts and protocols, and calls for developing a new understanding of fundamental problems such as interference, mobility, connectivity, capacity, and security, among others. While it is essential to advance theoretical research on fundamental and practical research on efficient policies, algorithms and protocols, it is also critical to develop useful applications, experimental prototypes, and real-world deployments to achieve an immediate impact on society for the success of this wireless networking paradigm.

Book excerpt: This paper presents an analytical model to compute the average service time and jitter experienced by a packet when transmitted in a saturated IEEE 802.11 ad hoc network. In contrast to traditional work in the literature, in which a distribution is usually fitted or assumed, we use a bottom-up approach and build the first two moments of the service time based on the IEEE 802.11 binary exponential backoff algorithm and the events underneath its operation. Our model is general enough to be applied to any type of IEEE 802.11 wireless ad hoc network where the channel state probabilities driving a node's backoff operation are known. We apply our model to saturated single-hop ad hoc networks under ideal channel conditions. We validate our model through extensive simulations and conduct a performance evaluation of a node's average service time and jitter for both direct sequence and frequency-hopping spread spectrum physical layers.

When modeling transportation systems such as freeway systems, arterial or downtown grid systems, the city planner and engineer is concerned with capturing the varied interactions between drivers, automobiles, and the infrastructure. Modeling and simulation are used to effectively optimize the design and operation of all of these urban systems. It is possible that in an urban simulation community workshop, citizens can work interactively in front of computers and be able using the click of the mouse to walk up to their own front porch, looking at the proposed shopping mall alternatives across the street from virtually any angle and proposed bridge or tunnel and see how it can reduce traffic congestion. Buildings can be scaled down or taken out, their orientation can be changed in order to check the view and orientation in order to have better site with efficient energy-conservation. The stone or brick material on a building can be replaced by colored concrete, or more trees and lampposts can be placed on the site. Such flexibility in simulation and animation allows creative ideas in the design and orientation of urban sites to be demonstrated to citizens and decision makers before final realization.

The throughput per node and the average forward progress are then evaluated for frequency-hopped multi-hop networks that employ (i) random forward routing with fixed transmission radius (RFR) and(ii) most forward progress routing with fixed transmission radius (MFR). The optimal average number of neighbors and transmission radius are derived for these cases when Reed-Solomon forward-error-control coding with minimum distance decoding or binary convolutional coding with Viterbi decoding is employed.

Book excerpt: In wireless ad-hoc networks, power and spectrum are two limited and precious system resources, and how to use them efficiently is the key to provide high performance communications. This dissertation presents a distributed system design framework and algorithms to achieve power-and-spectrum-efficient wireless communications in ad hoc networks. In the first part, we propose a cross-layer distributed power control and scheduling protocol for delay-constrained applications over mobile CDMA-based ad hoc wireless networks, where power control is employed to combat both the delay occurring on multi-hop wireless ad hoc networks and multiuser interference among mobile users. We also investigate the impact of Doppler spread upon the system performance, and provide a robust system which employs a combination of power control, and coding/interleaving to combat the effects of Doppler spread by exploiting the time diversity when the Doppler spread gets large. In the second part, a cognitive radio based multi-user resource allocation framework for mobile ad hoc networks is proposed. In particular, given pre-existing communications in the spectrum where the system is operating, a channel sensing and estimation mechanism is provided to obtain information such as subcarrier availability, noise power and channel gain. Given this information, both frequency spectrum and power are allocated to emerging new users (i.e., cognitive radio users), based on a distributed multi-user resource allocation framework, in order to achieve spectrum-efficient and power-efficient communications. In the third part, we investigate the issue of cooperative MIMO communications in ad hoc networks, and the issue of cooperative node selection is described, where a source node is surrounded by multiple neighbors and all of them are equipped with a single antenna. Given energy, delay and data rate constraints, a source node dynamically chooses its cooperating nodes from its neighbors to form a virtual MIMO system with the destination node (which is assumed to have multiple antennas), and adaptively allocates the power level and adjusts the constellation size for each of the selected cooperative nodes.
