Book Intelligent Vertical Handover Management in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Download or read book Intelligent Vertical Handover Management in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks written by Ammar Haider and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The upcoming generation of wireless networks are characterized by seamless mobility across wireless access networks belonging to different radio access technologies. This requires the heterogeneous access networks to be integrated together, and the mobile terminals to be equipped with multiple radio interfaces allowing the users to roam across different networks. Vertical Handover (VHO) is the process of transparent switching from one access network to other. To achieve seamless heterogeneous mobility, simple, robust and effective vertical handover mechanisms must be devised. The entire vertical handover process can by divided into three stages: VHO Preparation, VHO Decision and VHO Execution. Ideally, a vertical handover should complete without causing any disruption in the communication and with a minimum overhead on the network. To achieve these goals, each of the three stages in VHO should be individually optimized. This research aims to devise a vertical handover implementation that performs as close to ideal behaviour as possible. For this purpose, we have proposed new or enhanced algorithms corresponding to all three VHO stages. A heterogeneous network model comprises of two major types of networks - cellular networks with wide coverage areas, and wireless local area networks (WLAN) with small coverage but providing higher bandwidth at a lower cost. To optimize the VHO preparation phase, we have developed a hybrid vertical handoff method for maximizing WLAN utilization in a WLAN-cellular integrated environment. We accurately determine the timing instants for initiation of vertical handover for the mobile terminals that enter the WiFi hotspots, stay there for some time and then leave the area. The proposed method ensures that transition between cellular and WiFi networks should be with minimum disruption while utilizing WiFi signals for as long as possible. As a result, the mobile nodes get advantages of lowest probability of handover failure and minimum number of unnecessary handovers. The second phase, VHO decision should incorporate multiple parameters to select the best network from a list of available candidate networks. The list of possible decision metrics includes link quality, system QoS parameters, user preferences, monetary cost, application type, movement speed etc. To arrive at a unified decision, as per our proposal, the best candidate network is chosen by employing a multiple-criteria decision making algorithm named PROMETHEE. This approach yields the desired benefit of providing better QoS experience to end users. For the third phase in vertical handover (VHO execution), we have focussed on the specific admission control problem. We have introduced concepts from Online Social Networking (OSN) Sites into admission control and handoff scenarios, by use of OSN proxy servers running on WLAN access points. Because of an ever-increasing popularity of OSNs this solution hold a lot of potential. Using the access points as OSN proxy servers leads to a substantial localization of social network traffic within WLAN which is a great advantage when considered globally. We have formulated and evaluated a Social-Connectivity-aware Vertical Handover (SCVH) algorithm for efficient dissemination of social network feeds. This algorithm introduces a novel measure of social importance of users requesting for admission to WLAN by calculating their 'graph centrality' measures. According to our proposed SCVH, users with high importance value are given a high priority for handover to WLAN network. Performance evaluation of our proposed techniques is carried out in a network simulation environment which models a heterogeneous network scenario. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed schemes are successful in optimizing VHO performance, which should result in a nearly seamless handover across heterogeneous wireless networks.

Book Vertical Handovers in Heterogeneous Network Environments

Download or read book Vertical Handovers in Heterogeneous Network Environments written by Thikrait Al Mosawi and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterogeneous networks require a mechanism for enabling seamless handover between different access technologies. For real-time services, such as voice and video, the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is becoming the leading signalling protocol in IP networks and has already been accepted as the signalling standard in 3G wireless systems. However, existing proposals for supporting mobility with SIP are not sufficient to support terminal-mobility, as they do not take into account the effect of lower layer triggers on the handover detection and decision. The IEEE 802.21 standard defines the MIH (Media Independent Hand over) mechanism that offers advanced services for handover such as event notification, layer 2 handover commands, and information on available networks. In this thesis, a combination of the IEEE 802.21 MIH Function (MIHF) with the SIP mechanism is proposed to provide a fast and efficient handover solution. The proposed architecture and the signalling mechanisms are modelled using the OPNET network simulation tool. -- This thesis first provides an overview of the proposed architecture for vertical handover technique that is based on the MIH and SIP. An MIH-capable Mobile Node (MN) and a network architecture are developed. A handover manager at the MN is also introduced; its main function is to co-ordinate and manage the MIH services. -- Attention is then turned to the case of the Mobile Node-controlled handover. In this case, a predicative link trigger algorithm for seamless vertical handover in heterogeneous wireless networks is proposed and modelled. The results reveal that a timely link layer trigger to initiate the handover can significantly influence the handover performance in terms of packet loss and handover delay.

Book Optimization of Vertical Handover Decision Processes for Fourth Generation Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Download or read book Optimization of Vertical Handover Decision Processes for Fourth Generation Heterogeneous Wireless Networks written by Xiaohuan Yan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a vertical handover decision (VHD) scheme for optimizing the efficiency of vertical handover processes in the Fourth Generation (4G) heterogeneous wireless networks. The scheme consists of three closely integrated modules: Handover necessity estimation, handover target selection, and handover triggering condition estimation. Handover necessity estimation module determines whether a handover is necessary to an available network. Handover target selection module chooses the ``best'' network among th eavailable candidates based on a set of criteria. Finally, handover triggering condition estimation module determines the right moment to initiate a handover out of the currently connected network.4G wireless networks are expected to support mechanisms for tight integration and cooperation of divergent access network technologies. In such networks of heterogeneous nature, roaming users will experience frequent handovers across network boundaries. Thus, to ensure seamless roaming and efficient resource usage over dissimilar networks, intelligent VHD algorithms need to be used extensively. The research project presented in this thesis report focuses on this problem and provides an optimized VHD scheme, which minimizes the handover failures, unnecessary handovers and connection breakdowns whilst maintaining users' satisfaction at high levels. In addition, the scheme also provides mechanisms for mobile applications to control the tradeoff between the usage of the preferred access network and number of handovers or connection breakdowns.Simulation based performance evaluations demonstrate that the scheme reduces the number of handover failures, unnecessary handovers and connection breakdowns by up to 80%, 70% and 70%, respectively. They also show an increase of up to 50% in the satisfaction level of users.

Book LTE A Cellular Networks

Download or read book LTE A Cellular Networks written by Abid Yahya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, three different methods are presented to enhance the capacity and coverage area in LTE-A cellular networks. The scope involves the evaluation of the effect of the RN location in terms of capacity and the determination of the optimum location of the relay that provides maximum achievable data rate for users with limited interference at the cell boundaries. This book presents a new model to enhance both capacity and coverage area in LTE-A cellular network by determining the optimum location for the RN with limited interference. The new model is designed to enhance the capacity of the relay link by employing two antennas in RN. This design enables the relay link to absorb more users at cell edge regions. An algorithm called the Balance Power Algorithm (BPA) is developed to reduce MR power consumption. The book pertains to postgraduate students and researchers in wireless & mobile communications.

Book Cross Layer Approach for Seamless Vertical Handover in Networks

Download or read book Cross Layer Approach for Seamless Vertical Handover in Networks written by Jambulingam Vinothkumar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future Wireless systems will be characterized by their heterogeneity. Multiple access technologies provide access to internet content.Vertical handoff is an important mechanism for achieving continuous seamless transmissions in these networks. When connections need to migrate between heterogeneous networks seamless vertical handoff is necessary. Hence seamless vertical handoff is the first step. With regard to VHO performance, there is a critical need to develop algorithms for connection management and optimal resource allocation for seamless mobility. The integration of WLAN and Wimax has attracted the most attention. In some situation where many mobile devices try to handoff to the same AP, there will be more power consumption at the mobile devices due to increased congestion delay at the AP. Here we take account of e QoS parameters, bandwidth, jitter packet error rate and end-to-end delay, which are selected from multi-layer contributions. First vertical handoff was based on received signal strength (RSS) of the mobile node. Next vertical handoff is improvised by considering bandwidth as well as RSS.Results were simulated using NS-2 and comparison results are evaluated.

Book An Enhanced Vertical Handover Scheme for Monitoring Applications

Download or read book An Enhanced Vertical Handover Scheme for Monitoring Applications written by Hatem F. H. Ibrahim and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For service providers around the world, the network is the strategic platform for delivering new and advanced services to many end-user devices. Nowadays, the need of using two networks at the same time is increasing sharply especially in security monitoring systems. The switching between networks means handoff from one network to another and this is called vertical handover. Integration of various networks such as GPRS and WLAN into IP-based networks is required in these kinds of services, which further requires a seamless vertical handoff between wireless networks. However, all current vertical handover algorithms are implemented without taking into consideration the effect of any signal interfering that might occur, such as jamming signals that will confuse the handoff decision whether it should be taken or not. An improved GPRS-WLAN vertical handover is proposed in this research work. This algorithm is implemented with taking into consideration that the handover decision occurs depending on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) as well as the network throughput in order to get high service quality as well as seamless network connection. Due to the tunneling that have been proposed in this algorithm, a significant reduction in the handover delay has been achieved. Finally, as a conclusion, all the objectives of this research work is achieved which proves that when the network handoff depends on the throughput as well as the RSSI, is much better when the handoff depending on the RSSI only as the service connection will be continuous with the same quality or better.
