In almost all developed financial markets, private and institutional investors can purchase exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the most important indices in addition to index funds. While the first index funds were created in the USA in 1972, ETFs are more re-cent. ETFS have gained strongly in importance in recent years. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 2,0, Grenoble Ecole de Management, language: English, abstract: 1 Abstract As the ETF industry has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, inves-tors and advisors are finding themselves with more options than ever before. There's a vast universe of ETF investment options available, and once all opportunities are narrowed down and aligned with particular investment ideology, investors evaluate the ETF options on number of different criteria to identify and spot the most attractive one of all. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of ETFs compared to index funds when investing in the German funds market. It examines total and average return, volatility and tracking error of ETFs versus index funds tracking the DAX. Also a regression analysis is done in order to draw conclusion on the funds’ alpha, beta and coefficient determinant. It can be concluded that the hypothesis of whether ETFs are a cost-efficient way for institutional investors to invest in the DAX stands and evidence is provided. Results indicate that ETFs achieve higher average returns and less average volatili-ty. In addition, ETFs pursue a better full replication strategy than index funds. As a result, the tracking error for ETFs is lower than the index funds’. 2 Introduction Some studies have revealed that institutional investors put less emphasis on trading through stock exchange but prefer to directly create and redeem ex-change traded funds. An exchange-traded fund is a type of investment product that represent basket of securities such as the DAX index and are made available only through brokers and advisors. It was in 1993, that the American Stock Exchange launched the Spiders, SPDR to track the S&P 500. It was the first exchange traded product on markets with more coming later on. Diamonds was launched in 1998 which tracked the Dow Jones in industrial average and Cubes in 1999, which tracked the NASDAQ 100 But it was the mutual funds that were the most popular with institutional and private investors both for quite some time. This trend however is only now beginning to change as institutions find that ETFs can help attain a variety of goals that many other investment vehicles simply cannot provide. A recent survey from Greenwich Associates (carried out in 2010) that polled 70 investment firms revealed that ETF use is rising sharply. Among the highlights of the study: use of ETFs among pension funds, endowments and charitable foundations has grown to about 14%. ...

Book A Comparison between the European and the U S Mutual Fund Industry

Download or read book A Comparison between the European and the U S Mutual Fund Industry written by Rogér Otten and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study we analyze the development and performance of the European mutual fund industry and compare it with the industry in the United States, using the traditional structure-conduct-performance (SCP) paradigm. We find that Europe is still lagging the American mutual fund industry when it comes to total asset size, average fund size, and market importance. Furthermore, it appears that a few large domestic fund groups dominate the mutual fund markets in the individual European countries. The performance of domestic equity funds is tested using a data set containing the main European countries and the United States. The most striking results of these performance tests are the relative poor performance of U.S. funds, compared to the European funds, and the out-performance of small cap mutual funds.

Book Comparison Between Brazilian Exchange Traded Funds and Mutual Funds Performance

Download or read book Comparison Between Brazilian Exchange Traded Funds and Mutual Funds Performance written by Bruno Milani and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between returns and risk factors are likely to vary depending on the investor's time horizon, but CAPM supposes homogenous expectations. A relatively new approach known as wavelet analysis may help to reduce that problem, incorporating different time scales. Taking advantage of that, this paper aims to verify the differences in performance of Brazilian ETFs and mutual funds, according to benchmark, management style and time scale. We have wavelet decomposed share returns of Brazilian ETFs, the returns of the five main Brazilian mutual funds categories and the returns of the Brazilian Market proxy into 7 time scales. Then, we estimate an extended-CAPM for each time scale. We found that there are considerable performance/pricing differences between fund/ETFs categories, which are linked to the time horizon assumed.
