Book Performance Characteristics of Zinc rich Coatings Applied to Carbon Steel

Download or read book Performance Characteristics of Zinc rich Coatings Applied to Carbon Steel written by William J. Paton and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program was conducted to evaluate the performance of topcoated and untopcoated zinc-rich coatings. Sacrificial coatings of this type are required for protecting carbon steel structures from the aggressive KSC sea coast environment. A total of 59 commercially available zinc-rich coatings and 47 topcoated materials were exposed for an 18-month period. Test panels were placed in special racks placed approximately 30.5 m (100 feet) above the high tide line at the KSC Corrosion Test Site. Laboratory tests to determine the temperature resistance, abrasion resistance, and adhesion of the untopcoated zinc-rich coatings were also performed. It has been concluded that: (1) The inorganic types of zinc-rich coatings are far superior to the organic types in the KSC environment. (2) Organic zinc-rich coatings applied at 0.1 - 0.15 mm (4-6 mils) film thickness provide better corrosion protection than when applied at the manufacturers' recommended nominal film thickness of .08 mm (3 mils). (3) Topcoats are not necessary, or even desirable, when used in conjunction with zinc-rich coatings in the KSC environment. (4) Some types of inorganic zinc-rich coatings require an extended outdoor weathering period in order to obtain adequate mechanical properties. and (5) A properly formulated inorganic zinc-rich coating is not affected by a 24-hour thermal exposure to 400 C (752 F).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion control in the aerospace industry has always been important, but is becoming more so with the ageing of the aircraft fleet. Corrosion control in the aerospace industry provides a comprehensive review of the subject with real-world perspectives and approaches to corrosion control and prevention.Part one discusses the fundamentals of corrosion and the cost of corrosion with chapters on such topics as corrosion and the threat to aircraft structural integrity and the effect of corrosion on aluminium alloys. Part two then reviews corrosion monitoring, evaluation and prediction including non-destructive evaluation of corrosion, integrated health and corrosion monitoring systems, modelling of corrosion and fatigue on aircraft structures and corrosion control in space launch vehicles. Finally, Part three covers corrosion protection and prevention, including chapters which discuss coating removal techniques, novel corrosion schemes, greases and their role in corrosion control and business strategies in fleet maintenance. With its distinguished editor and team of expert contributors, Corrosion control in the aerospace industry is a standard reference for everyone involved in the maintenance and daily operation of aircraft, as well as those concerned with aircraft safety, designers of aircraft, materials scientists and corrosion experts. - Discusses the fundamentals of corrosion and the cost of corrosion to the aerospace industry - Examines the threat corrosion poses to aircraft structural integrity and the effect of corrosion on the mechanical behaviour of aircraft - Reviews methods for corrosion monitoring, evaluation and prediction examining both current practices and future trends

Book Adhesion Criteria Between Water based Inorganic Zinc Coatings and Their Topcoats for Steel

Download or read book Adhesion Criteria Between Water based Inorganic Zinc Coatings and Their Topcoats for Steel written by J. Peter Ault and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a test program designed to investigate, in the laboratory, possible causes for failure of water-based inorganic zinc (WBIOZ) coatings. Failures observed in the field have consisted of either topcoat delamination or the appearance of "freckle rusting" in the cured WBIOZ primer. There are many hypotheses regarding the cause of these failures, but no sufficient explanation exists. Furthermore, there are no proven means to ensure that failures do not occur. The general consensus of the literature is that the failures relate to improper cure of the WBIOZ primer. This improper curing is further hypothesized to relate to environmental conditions. The project initially focused on identifying what relationship, if any, existed between environmental conditions and the observed failure modes. Since a definitive relationship did not exist, further testing was conducted to investigate the effects of substrate salt contamination, improper zinc content in the mixed coating, and the effects of rinsing the primer before topcoating. This report presents the more practical results of the study
