Book excerpt: In the context of the SERVIR-Africa project, the SERVIR Arizona Team is developing streamflow forecast systems on African basins using Satellite Precipitation Products (SPP) to drive the models. These products have errors that need to be addressed before using them to drive hydrologic models. An analysis of the errors of the Satellite Precipitation Products TMPA-3B42RT, CMORPH, and PERSIANN over Africa is presented, followed by bias correction and error reduction methods to improve the remote sensed estimates. The GPCP 1-degree-day reanalysis product was used as the rainfall truth dataset. The Bias Correction Spatial Downscaling (BCSD) method developed by Wood et al., was used successfully to reduce the errors of SPP. The original and bias corrected estimates from the three SPP are used to calibrate and simulate three catchments of the Senegal River basin using HYMOD, finding that the use of bias corrected estimates produces a significant improvement in streamflow simulation.

Book excerpt: Hydrology Modeling using HEC-HMS (Hydrological Engineering Centre-Hydrologic Modeling System) is accepted globally for event-based or continuous simulation of the rainfall-runoff operation. Similarly, Machine learning is a fast-growing discipline that offers numerous alternatives suitable for hydrology research's high demands and limitations. Conventional and process-based models such as HEC-HMS are typically created at specific spatiotemporal scales and do not easily fit the diversified and complex input parameters. Therefore, in this research, the effectiveness of Random Forest, a machine learning model, was compared with HEC-HMS for the rainfall-runoff process. In addition, Point gauge observations have historically been the primary source of the necessary rainfall data for hydrologic models. However, point gauge observation does not provide accurate information on rainfall's spatial and temporal variability, which is vital for hydrological models. Therefore, this study also evaluates the performance of satellite and radar precipitation products for hydrological analysis. The results revealed that integrated Machine Learning and physical-based model could provide more confidence in rainfall-runoff and flood depth prediction. Similarly, the study revealed that radar data performance was superior to the gauging station's rainfall data for the hydrologic analysis in large watersheds. The discussions in this research will encourage researchers and system managers to improve current rainfall-runoff simulation models by application of Machine learning and radar rainfall data.

Book excerpt: In February of 2014 NASA has launched the core observatory of The Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM). Since then, the mission has been providing a wealth of observation data collected by the core observatory along with other satellites belonging to the mission space constellation. One of the most important data products that GPM provides is the Level 4 (L4) rainfall data product called Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG). IMERG is constructed using the raw data collected by the Microwave (MW) sensors on board the constellation satellites along with the Infrared (IR) sensors on board geostationary satellites and the advance Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the GPM core satellite. The IMERG product is available globally for all interested researchers to use. In this dissertation, I focus on the applicability of IMERG in hydrologic applications, and specifically in flood peak modeling. In order to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of IMERG that is oriented towards hydrologic modeling. I have explored multiple hydrologic models which can be used to produce stream flow estimates using IMERG without the need of parameter calibration based on the model's inputs. The calibration free capability is essential since model parameter calibration obscures the effect of the errors associated with the rainfall input on the estimated discharges, which in turn will limit our understanding about the distribution of the errors in IMERG over space and time. The two hydrologic models we used in this study are both physically based distributed models and were setup over the domain of the state of Iowa which is located in the United States' Midwest.

Book excerpt: Data assimilation of satellite-based observations of hydrological variables with full numerical physics models can be used to downscale these observations from coarse to high resolution to improve microwave sensor-based soil moisture observations. Moreover, assimilation can also be used to predict related hydrological variables, e.g., precipitation products can be assimilated in a land information system to estimate soil moisture. High quality spatio-temporal observations of these processes are vital for a successful assimilation which in turn needs a detailed analysis and improvement. In this research, pattern recognition and adaptive signal processing methods are developed for the spatio-temporal analysis and enhancement of soil moisture and precipitation datasets. These methods are applied to accomplish the following tasks: (i) a consistency analysis of level-3 soil moisture data from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - EOS (AMSR-E) against in-situ soil moisture measurements from the USDA Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN). This method performs a consistency assessment of the entire time series in relation to others and provides a spatial distribution of consistency levels. The methodology is based on a combination of wavelet-based feature extraction and oneclass support vector machines (SVM) classifier. Spatial distribution of consistency levels are presented as consistency maps for a region, including the states of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. These results are well correlated with the spatial distributions of average soil moisture, and the cumulative counts of dense vegetation; (ii) a modified singular spectral analysis based interpolation scheme is developed and validated on a few geophysical data products including GODAE's high resolution sea surface temperature (GHRSST). This method is later employed to fill the systematic gaps in level-3 AMSR-E soil moisture dataset; (iii) a combination of artificial neural networks and vector space transformation function is used to fuse several high resolution precipitation products (HRPP). The final merged product is statistically superior to any of the individual datasets over a seasonal period. The results have been tested against ground based measurements of rainfall over our study area and average accuracies obtained are 85% in the summer and 55% in the winter 2007.
