Book Husserl s Phenomenology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin Hermberg
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2006-12-08
  • ISBN : 1441170251
  • Pages : 158 pages

Download or read book Husserl s Phenomenology written by Kevin Hermberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-12-08 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Hermberg's book fills an important gap in previous Husserl scholarship by focusing on intersubjectivity and empathy (i.e., the experience of others as other subjects) and by addressing the related issues of validity, the degrees of evidence with which something can be experienced, and the different senses of 'objective' in Husserl's texts. Despite accusations by commentators that Husserl's is a solipsistic philosophy and that the epistemologies in Husserl's late and early works are contradictory, Hermberg shows that empathy, and thus other subjects, are related to one's knowledge on the view offered in each of Husserl's Introductions to Phenomenology. Empathy is significantly related to knowledge in at least two ways, and Husserl's epistemology might, consequently, be called a social epistemology: (a) empathy helps to give evidence for validity and thus to solidify one's knowledge, and (b) it helps to broaden one's knowledge by giving access to what others have known. These roles of empathy are not at odds with one another; rather, both are at play in each of the Introductions (if even only implicitly) and, given his position in the earlier work, Husserl needed to expand the role of empathy as he did. Such a reliance on empathy, however, calls into question whether Husserl's is a transcendental philosophy in the sense Husserl claimed.

Book An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding

Download or read book An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding written by John Locke and published by Strelbytskyy Multimedia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is a work by John Locke concerning the foundation of human knowledge and understanding. Locke describes the mind at birth as a blank slate (tabula rasa, although he did not use those actual words) filled later through experience. A dominant theme of the Essay is the question: What is the capacity of the human mind for understanding and knowledge? The Essay’s influence was enormous, perhaps as great as that of any other philosophical work apart from those of Plato and Aristotle. Its importance in the English-speaking world of the 18th century can scarcely be overstated. Along with the works of Descartes, it constitutes the foundation of modern Western philosophy.

Book Principles and Practices in Ancient Greek and Chinese Science

Download or read book Principles and Practices in Ancient Greek and Chinese Science written by G.E.R. Lloyd and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 90 or so articles he has published in the last two decades Professor Lloyd has chosen fifteen of the most important and influential to be reprinted in this collection. They tackle a wide range of problems in ancient Greek and Chinese thought, focussing especially on science but including also medicine, mathematics, philosophy and mythology. Three common themes recur: the ancients' own concern with disciplinary boundaries, their engagement in polemics, and the heterogeneity of different traditions - cultivating different styles of reasoning with different results - in ancient science. Alongside papers that deal with technical issues in the interpretation of our sources, others raise strategic questions to do with the institutional framework of ancient science, the role of literacy in its development, and the underlying ontological and epistemological presuppositions of different groups of ancient investigators. The collection closes with a study in which Lloyd sets out how he sees the further comparative study of ancient science developing. Two of the articles appear here for the first time in English. The others are reprinted in their original form. Supplementary bibliographies are added referring to the most recent scholarship on the issues discussed.

Book The Bet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Garry Potter
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-06-04
  • ISBN : 0429749856
  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book The Bet written by Garry Potter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this epistemological volume takes Searle’s ‘simple theory’ and ‘common sense’ realism and builds it from the ground up, applying it to some of the most contentious issues in the philosophy of science. Garry Potter shall also attempt to extent his notions of science and realism beyond the subject boundaries to demonstrate the applicability of both scientificity and realism where such a possibility is perhaps most counter-intuitive: literary criticism. Potter thus presents a unified theory of knowledge.
