Book Perennials Or Old Fashioned Hardy Garden Flowers 1924 Catalogue Classic Reprint

Download or read book Perennials Or Old Fashioned Hardy Garden Flowers 1924 Catalogue Classic Reprint written by Pontiac Nursery Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perennials, or Old Fashioned Hardy Garden Flowers, 1924 Catalogue There is no question -in the mind of any one who has a thorough knowledge of nursery stock and its demand among home owners, that a larger number of plants such as are illustrated in this book, can be sold in a given territory than any other class of stock. The orders will not run into money like shrubs, roses or trees, as they are less expensive, but dozens and hundreds can be sold where singles and half-dozens are disposed of in other classes of stock. There is hardly a home in this country where it is not possible to interest the owner in some of these Hardy Perennial Plants as they are a con stant source of joy in the summer months. Study the descriptions so that you know what you are selling, and you will have no trouble in showing any householder where it would be desirable to plant some of this stock. In the back of the book you will find Cannas, Dahlias' and Gladioli, which should be sold only for spring shipment. Remember we do not wish any orders for this class of stock for fall shipment. You can, however, sell them all the year around as long as you take them on spring blanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garden Roses and Hardy Perennials: Spring 1924 A glance at the list of Roses I offer, illustrates my point: 33 varieties, all-told - but these have been chosen and are offered as the best, from trials I have made with hundreds. I have dis carded many varieties this year, which have been replaced by others of greater merit and sturdier constitution. Among old - fashioned Hardy Flowers, Delphiniums, Lupins, Pyrethrums, Gaillardias and Scabiosa (all splendid garden flowers and ideal for cutting) have received my special attention, many new forms and colors of rare charm are offered. Book Hardy Perennials and Old Fashioned Garden Flowers

Download or read book Hardy Perennials and Old Fashioned Garden Flowers written by John Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardy Perennials and Old-Fashioned Garden Flowers: Describing the Most Desirable Plants Many gardens are very small, but these, if pro perly managed, have their advantages. The smaller the garden the more choice should be the collection, and the more highly should it be cultivated. I shall be glad if anything I say tends in this direction. From my notes of plants useful memoranda may be made, with the object of adding a few of the freest bloomers in each month, thus avoiding the error often committed of growing such subjects as mostly flower at one time, after which the garden has a forlorn appearance. The plants should not be blamed for this; the selection is at fault. No amount of time and care can make a garden what it should be if untidy and weedy plants prevail. On the other hand, the most beautiful species, both as regards foliage and flowers, can be just as easily cultivated. The object of this small work is to furnish the names and descriptions of really useful and reliable Hardy and Perennial Plants, suitable for all kinds of flower gardens, together with definite cultural hints on each plant. Book Illustrated Descriptive Catalogue of Choice Hardy Perennials Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illustrated Descriptive Catalogue of Choice Hardy Perennials Classic Reprint written by Reading Nursery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Descriptive Catalogue of Choice Hardy Perennials WE again present our friends and patrons with a new edition of our Perennial Catalogue. Our facilities for furnishing Hardy Herbaceous Plants are now unexcelled by any other firm in the United States, while our facilities for packing and filling orders are the best. Our collection now includes all the best species known to cultivation, and, with our numerous collectors, we can furnish all plants desired, whether native or foreign, and in quantities to suit. We would have all remember that we can also furnish all Hardy Trees and Shrubs desired, and our reputation in this line is unequalled. Our collection of Hardy Trees and Shrubs, both Evergreen and Deciduous, as well as Climbing Plants, and our facilities for their cultivation and sale, are unexcelled. For thirty-five years we have been contributing to the embellishment-s of the suburban and country residences, parks, streets, and gardens of New England, and the Reading Nursery is a byword for first-class stock by our numerous friends. We have laid out many of the finest grounds to be seen in our own and neighboring States, while few, indeed, are the public or private grounds which have not some representatives of our stock, while many are almost entirely supplied by us. We have taken up the cultivation and dissemination of Hardy Plants for the last few years. Knowing that their value is such as to warrant their extended and popular use. Hardy Flowers are now fully admitted to be the flowers of the future, and no one with a full knowledge of the subject disputes their great advantages over tender plants for use in flower-gardens and bedding, not that they or we desire to exterminate the bedding systems or the use of tender plants, but to use each in their proper place, and not to use one at the expense of the other. Both have their uses, and both are most desirable, but for general use in dower-gardens, and for the greatest return for the least money, the Bedding Plants are inferior to Hardy Plants in desirable results. Let us look at the matter. All who have had experience with bedding-plants know ofthe enormous expense and care necessary to produce satisfactory results. When one takes into account the expense incurred in propagating-houses during the winter, the care and attention necessary to the raising of the thousands of t'ender plants, their protection from fr'ost, hardening-off in spring, and their constant renewal each year, with their planting in May or June, a season at which the flower garden should be a mass of beauty, he commences to realize that he does not receive the return for his expenditure which it is fair to expect. -now, with the expenditure of one year's cost of bedding-plants, in Hardy Flowers, one may obtain results far more satisfactory, and, instead of an utter blank of flowers in spring and late fall, as with bedding-plants, one may secure a continuous succession of bloom, and in a variety which it is impossible to obtain with tender plants. Book Special List of Hardy Outdoor Perennials Classic Reprint

Download or read book Special List of Hardy Outdoor Perennials Classic Reprint written by I. E. Ilgenfritz' Sons Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special List of Hardy Outdoor Perennials The Columbines are one of the most elegant and beautiful of hardy plants, producing their graceful spurred flowers on stems rising 2 feet or more above the beautifully divided foliage, and should be planted wherever their presence will serve to lighten up a too stiff and formal planting, for no other plant has so airy a grace as the Columbine, is more generous of its blooms, or more effectively adapted for cut flowers. They are not particular as to soil or location, although they prefer a sandy loam and a moist but well drained, sunny position, and usually make themselves at home in any hardy border or rockery. Their period of flowering covers the late Spring and early Summer months. Taken as a whole, they are a most im portant part of the hardy garden, and should be grown in quantity by every lover of old-fashioned garden flowers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardy Perennials The advanced student who honours this work with his attention, and finds that which he deems too Simple and elementary, will, we trust, bear patiently with us, remembering our desire to guide the first steps of the newest recruit to the ranks of gardeners, whilst Should there be among the latter those who find difficulty among the inevitable technicalities, botanical names, and problems that must find a place in a book of this character, let us assure him that patience and perseverance will in due time suffice to enable him to secure a firmer grasp and clearer insight, and to achieve success that will abundantly repay him for the study and effort involved.
