Abetted by transformative changes in communication and transportation (the subject of the first chapter), women established links among themselves, sometimes informally, sometimes as part of formal organizations. Most goal-oriented networks, particularly those with social and political agendas, were personal, national or transnational in nature and inevitably excluded those who did not share the goal. Such activist networks and their influences are the main focus of Part One. Topics addressed include women's national and international networks in British temperance associations; British anti-slavery societies; Italian crime syndicates; the Istanbul region of the Ottoman Empire; Philippine suffragism, early twentieth-century Portuguese political organizations, and Great War relief efforts in France. In Campania, until 1991, the population tacitly accepted the relationship between the Camorra and the local political elite (based on the exchange of votes for state contracts and protection), and because of the lack of reliable sources it could not seriously be studied by political scientists. In 1991, however, a law was passed which gave generous remission of sentences to criminals who wanted to cooperate with the police. Following this, many members of the Camorra revealed important aspects of the criminal, economic and political activities of their organization. This new information has permitted a re-examination of the Camorra and has provided material for the story to be told.

To clarify what is at stake, Vassilis Lambropoulos traces the ideology of European culture from the Reformation, focusing on a key element of Western tradition: the act of interpretation as a distinct practice of understanding and a civil right. Championed by Protestants insisting on independent interpretation of scripture, this ideal of autonomy ushered in the era of modernity with its essentialist philosophy of universal man and his aesthetic understanding of the world. After explaining the dominance of European culture through the combined archetypes of Hebraism (reason and morality) and Hellenism (spirit and art), Lambropoulos shows how the rule of autonomy has been transformed into the aesthetic, disinterested contemplation of things in themselves. Arguing that it is time to restore the socio-political dimension to the movement of autonomy, he proposes that a genealogy of the Hebraic-Hellenic archetypes can help us evaluate more recent models--like the Afrocentric one--and redefine the controversy surrounding education, Eurocentrism, and cultural politics.
