Book Biology and Culture of Percid Fishes

Download or read book Biology and Culture of Percid Fishes written by Patrick Kestemont and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensive work focuses on an important group of temperate freshwater fish, approaching the topic from the perspectives of both biology and aquaculture. It compiles the latest research on fish belonging to the Percidae family and describes in detail all biological aspects relevant to the culture of different species, including ecology, reproductive physiology, feeding and nutrition, genetics, immunology, stress physiology and behavior. It also considers commercial fish production and fish farming topics, such as protocols for induction of gonad maturation, spawning, incubation and larval rearing. Expert contributors not only provide a critical peer review of scientific literature but also original research data, and identify effective practical techniques. The book features chapters on systematics, ecology and evolution, on development, metabolism and husbandry of early life stages and on growth, metabolism, behavior and husbandry of juvenile and grow-out stages. Furthermore, the authors consider genetic improvement and domestication, as well as diseases and health management, crucial to the readers' understanding of these fish and how they can be cultured. Both researchers of percid fish biology and aquaculture professionals who are considering intensive and pond culture of percid fishes will value this timely and comprehensive handbook.)

Book Past and Present Aquatic Habitats and Fish Populations of the Yazoo Mississippi Delta

Download or read book Past and Present Aquatic Habitats and Fish Populations of the Yazoo Mississippi Delta written by Mason D. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this review and synthesis of the literature, published and unpublished, is to describe the major processes that shape and influence the aquatic habitats and fish communities in the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta (YMD) and to outline a program of research. The YMD is influenced by the large geographic and temporal scales of the Mississippi River watershed. It extends over 41 percent of the contiguous United States. The Mississippi River has existed in its current location for more than 1.2 million years, and ancient fish species are still present in the watershed. About 9,500 years BP, the Mississippi River formed into a predominantly meandering channel from which most of the aquatic habitats in the YMD developed. Oxbows formed in the meander belts shape the topography of the YMD and are a fundamental part of the development of the aquatic habitat of the YMD. Seasonal floods are keystone events in the YMD, but the process is altered substantially from its previous natural state. Levees, flood control structures, land use practices, and loss of large wood in river channels have modified natural processes throughout most of the YMD. However, most of the larger fish species present during aboriginal occupation of the YMD are still present. Given the large-scale loss of habitat throughout the YMD and the deterioration of water quality, the abundance and diversity of fish likely have declined. In the past few years, management of aquatic habitats in the YMD has centered on mitigating and preventing some of the adverse effects of anthropogenic disturbance. A program of "naturalization" to move aquatic ecosystem processes closer to natural conditions is possible within the context of socioeconomic constraints. The research approach proposed in this paper provides a model to develop an understanding of the fish and aquatic habitat that can contribute to a sustainable restoration program.

Book Assessing the Sustainability and Biological Integrity of Water Resources Using Fish Communities

Download or read book Assessing the Sustainability and Biological Integrity of Water Resources Using Fish Communities written by Thomas P. Simon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the application of fish community characteristics to evaluate the sustainability and biological integrity of freshwaters. Topics include perspectives on use of fish communities as environmental indicators in program development, collaboration, and partnership forming; influence of specific taxa on assessment of the IBI; regional applications for areas where the IBI had not previously been developed; and specific applications of the IBI developed for coldwater streams, inland lakes, Great Lakes, reservoirs, and tailwaters.

Book Environmental Contaminants in Biota

Download or read book Environmental Contaminants in Biota written by W. Nelson Beyer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining tissue residues of contaminants in biota reveals the movement of contaminants within organisms and through food chains as well as the context for understanding and quantifying injuries to organisms and their communities. Yet tissue concentrations of some contaminants are especially challenging to interpret and the ability of today’s analytical chemists to provide reliable analytical data of most important environmental contaminants often surpasses the ability of ecotoxicologists to interpret those data. Offering guidance on the ecotoxicologically meaningful interpretation of tissue concentrations, Environmental Contaminants in Biota, Interpreting Tissue Concentrations, Second Edition is updated with current data and new ways of analyzing those data as well as additional contaminants not previously considered. Beginning with a history of wildlife toxicology and data interpretation, chapters cover a wide range of contaminants and their hazardous and lethal concentrations in various animals including DDT, Dioxins, PCBs, and PBDEs in aquatic organisms; methylmurcury, selenium, and trace metals in fishes and aquatic invertebrates; and pharmaceuticals and organic contaminants in marine mammals. The book considers the impact of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Dibenzo-p-Dioxins and Dibenzofurans, and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers; cyclodiene; and other organochlorine pesticides in birds and mammals. Later chapters examine the effects and analysis of lead, cadmium, and radionuclides in biota. With thousands of published research papers reporting tissue concentrations each year, Environmental Contaminants in Biota, Interpreting Tissue Concentrations, Second Edition gives ecotoxicologists the ability to draw actionable value regarding the toxicological consequences of those concentrations and relate tissue concentrations quantitatively to injury: the core of ecotoxicology.
