Book excerpt: There have been few research efforts that address the perceptions, design, and legal issues of manufactured housing. Today much of the perception of manufactured housing is based on the "mobile units" and "trailer parks" that predated the late 1970s. The negative perception toward using manufactured housing as a residential unit, has led to the adoption of exclusionary ordinances that hinders and prevent the placement of manufactured homes. There have been favorable and unfavorable court decisions on the exclusionary practices concerning the legal system. Urban Systemized Housing v City of Louisville, a landmark case for the City of Louisville and Jefferson County, was instrumental in the amendment of their zoning ordinances that prohibited the placement of manufactured housing. In recent years the manufactured housing industry has evolved from single-wide and doublewide styles with low pitch roofs to two-story homes matching the appearance standards of traditional site-built housing (Holiday Homes, 2001). This thesis will examine the effects of barriers that have historically existed as deterrents to the use of on Manufactured Housing (MFH) as a housing option in inner cities. In many instances, such barriers prohibit the use of MFH as a viable alternative for affordable housing. This body of academic research will examine the major factors that reveal how these barriers were created and seeks to dispel unfounded perceptions and myths associated with manufactured housing. Furthermore, what needs to be accomplished to remove the negative stigmas surrounding perceptions, design and legal issues pertaining to MFH in the City of Covington Kentucky.

Book Public Perceptions of Affordable Housing

Download or read book Public Perceptions of Affordable Housing written by Jenna Lee Tighe and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of affordable housing often involves a contentious siting process. Proposed housing developments frequently trigger concern among neighbors and community groups about potential negative impacts on neighborhood quality of life and property values. Advocates, developers, and researchers have long suspected that some of these concerns stem from racial or class prejudice, yet, to date, these assumptions lack empirical evidence. My research seeks to examine the roles that perceptions of race and class play in shaping opinions that underlie public opposition to affordable housing. Such opposition often earns the label "Not in my Backyard" (NIMBY). The application of a mixed-methods approach helps determine why the public opposes the development of affordable housing in their neighborhoods and towns. The focus group and survey results provide a rich understanding of the underlying attitudes that trigger opposition to affordable housing when proposed nearby. This study demonstrates that stereotypes and perceptions of the poor and minorities are particularly strong determinants of affordable housing opposition. This research improves our understanding of public attitudes toward affordable housing attitudes, leading to a more focused and effective policies and plans for the siting of affordable housing. The results provide advocates, planners, developers, and researchers with a more accurate portrayal of affordable housing opposition, thereby allowing the response to be shaped in a more appropriate manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular opinion holds that public housing is a failure; so what more needs to be said about seventy-five years of dashed hopes and destructive policies? Over the past decade, however, historians and social scientists have quietly exploded the common wisdom about public housing. Public Housing Myths pulls together these fresh perspectives and unexpected findings into a single volume to provide an updated, panoramic view of public housing. With eleven chapters by prominent scholars, the collection not only covers a groundbreaking range of public housing issues transnationally but also does so in a revisionist and provocative manner. With students in mind, Public Housing Myths is organized thematically around popular preconceptions and myths about the policies surrounding big city public housing, the places themselves, and the people who call them home. The authors challenge narratives of inevitable decline, architectural determinism, and rampant criminality that have shaped earlier accounts and still dominate public perception.
