This volume draws together the increasing body of knowledge regarding the mechanisms underlying tactile sensation and how they relate to tactile perception.Individual chapters address; the response of mechanoreceptors to stimuli (including movement and shape), the role of the somatosensory cortex in processing tactile information, the psychophysics and neurophysiology of the detection and categorisation of somesthetic stimuli, perceptual constancy, recent findings in regard to short term and long term plasticity in the somatosensory cortex and the psychophysical correlates of this plasticity, and parallel versus serial information processing in the cortex.The authors look at past and current research, and comment on the direction of future investigation, relating findings from psychophysical studies of tactile behavior to our growing understanding of the underlying neural mechanisms.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on tactile perception and aims at a comprehensive analysis of its characteristics over the time-course of various goal-directed movements. Tactile perception is assessed by means of discrimination and detection paradigms, as well as event-related potentials (ERPs). The main question investigated throughout the thesis is: 'What changes in tactile perception, if any, take place over the time course of a goal-directed movement?' In Chapter 2, the mechanisms related to such identified changes are examined: a facilitatory one - attention, and an inhibitory one - suppression. The experiment in Chapter 3 tests, at a brain level, amongst several explanations of the experimental results outlined in Chapter 2: timing-based, effector- based, and modality-based attentional/suppressive influences. In Chapter 4, other naturalistic movements are investigated (i.e., the movements involved in juggling and throwing/catching a basketball). The results indicate a lack of facilitation in the processing of tactile information during the preparatory phase of the movement. Furthermore, differential changes are identified in tactile perception over the execution phase of the movement: At a behavioural level, tactile sensitivity significantly declines over the execution phase of the movement (though the detection of incoming tactile stimulation is enhanced), while at a neuronal level the same period exhibits significantly enhanced responses to somatosensory stimulation. The experiments reported here thus bring evidence in favour of a dissociation between detecting and discriminating what is felt while moving. These results suggest that the quality of what is felt while moving may not be important for movement and, at the same time, that different pathways in the brain may be responsible for detecting and discriminating what is felt over the time course of a goal-directed movement. Based on these findings, in Chapter 5, the implications of these results are discussed and directions for further research are outlined.

Book excerpt: The specific aim of this project was to test the hypothesis (through parallel neurophysiological experiments and neural network modeling simulations) that perceptual mislocalization of a moving tactile stimulus arises from a systematic misrepresentation of stimulus location on the skin by primary somatosensory cerebral cortex (SI). Experimentally, SI cortical experiments substantiated the original hypothesis by demonstrating that the pattern of neural activity evoked in SI cortex by a moving skin stimulus varies with stimulus velocity in a manner paralleling that of perception. In the modeling studies, a novel model of synaptic input integration by dendrites of cortical pyramidal cells was developed which enables cells to tune to higher-order stimulus features. Studies with the model also supported the original hypothesis. Additionally, this network model was tested for its ability to extract higher order features of sensory input patterns, and it was shown to be very successful at extending current techniques of nonlinear factor analysis. In this progress report, we demonstrate its use in automatic target recognition, or more specifically, in recognizing military vehicles in real-world settings.

By means of suitable patterns on a partly concealed rotating disc Michotte was able to give the impression of objects in movement; and where certain conditions of speed, position, and time-interval were satisfied, his subjects received the impression of a causal interaction between two objects – for example, the impression that one object has ‘bumped into’ another (the ‘Launching Effect’) or is carrying it along (the ‘Entraining Effect’). In a further group of experiments Michotte studies the conditions in which moving objects look as though they are alive. A large number of experiments are described, and on the basis of them Michotte formulates a theory as to the conditions in which causal impressions occur. He also compares his own views on causality with those of Hume, Maine de Biran, and Piaget.
