Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine how perceptions of a chilly climate differ between students in traditionally female-dominated majors versus traditionally male-dominated majors, and how these perceptions relate to students' intentions to persist or pursue higher education in their chosen field. Participants were 403 students attending a community college in the southern United States, including students majoring in information technology (IT), engineering, education, and nursing. Participants completed the 28-item Perceived Chilly Climate Scale (PCCS) and other informational items. Findings indicated that women found the climate chillier than men, non-white students found the climate chillier than white students, younger students perceived the climate chillier than older students, but paradoxically students in traditionally female-dominated majors perceived the climate chillier than students in traditionally male-dominated majors. Intent to leave the field was not a significant predictor of perceptions of chilly climate.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was (a) to provide an analysis of the levels of college self-efficacy and of the campus environmental perceptions of African American males at rural, urban, and suburban two- year community colleges in the state of Ohio and (b) to determine whether there was a statistically significant relationship between college self-efficacy, campus environmental perceptions, and academic achievement at these types of community colleges (rural, urban, and suburban) in Ohio. Further, the study examined whether academic achievement could be predicted from academic self-efficacy and campus environmental perceptions at community colleges in the state of Ohio. Descriptive statistics and a chi-squared analysis were employed in this study to determine that respondents were representative of the entire population or sample. A correlational analysis revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between college self-efficacy and campus environment. This correlation suggests that students who perceive a more positive environment tend to have higher college self-efficacy. A statistically significant positive correlation also was found between college environment and two specific dimensions of college efficacy: course efficacy and social efficacy. Multiple regression analysis revealed that college self-efficacy is a significant predictor of expected GPA among African American males in two- year community colleges, but college environment was not a statistically significant predictor. Results of the regression analysis also indicated that course self-efficacy and social self-efficacy (the two components of college self-efficacy) were statistically significant predictors of expected GPA, but college environment was not. Results of the regression analysis revealed that college self-efficacy was a statistically significant predictor of past-term GPA, but college environment was not. Neither course self-efficacy nor college environment predicted past-term GPA, whereas social self-efficacy and college environment were statistically significant predictors of past-term GPA. Additionally, results of the regression analysis showed that the interaction was not statistically significant, meaning that the influence of campus environment on academic achievement did not vary based on the level of course efficacy or on the two components of college self-efficacy (course self-efficacy and social self-efficacy) among African American males in two-year community colleges. Results of this study suggest that student affairs practitioners, administrators, faculty members, and policymakers should be present as role models for African American male community college students. Results also suggest that administrators (especially those who pair African American male students with faculty mentors) should focus on increasing the college self-efficacy of this particular student population.

Book excerpt: The current study explored the effects of non-traditional choices on psychological well-being. Participants were divided into groups by their generational status. First generation college students (FGC) reported that neither of their parents had any college experience while the students from college educated families (CEF) reported that one or both of their parents had some education beyond high school. The study utilized self-report, archival data. The Scales of Psychological Well-Being (Ryff, 1989) provided overall well-being scores as well as six subscales. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet & Farley, 1988), two subscales of the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (Bake & Siryk, 1984), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) were also used. These three constructs were also understood in their relationship to well-being. The results suggest that self-esteem and social support from friends are important factors for all college students. Academic adjustment appeared to be related to well-being for all students but was more predictive of well-being for the FGC students. In looking at perceived social support from family, FGC students indicated a negative correlation between this type of support and their feelings of autonomy. Similarly, a linear regression model for CEF students showed that perceived social support from family was one of three variables in a model predicting well-being. No significant group differences were observed in the reports of overall well-being, perceived social support, self-esteem, or adaptation to college. This was contrary to what was hypothesized, but may be the result of a unique sample which included many older, African American women who commuted to school. Considerations of the sample and its influence on the findings have been included. Suggestions for future research address the need to produce more generalizable findings and further differentiate between the needs of FGC students and the needs of new college students in general.

Book excerpt: This study used a mixed-methods approach to investigate how participation in a diversity program based on intergroup contact theory and critical race theory, influences Black male undergraduate perceptions of campus climate, compared with their peers. The methods employed enabled the researcher to measure changes in campus climate satisfaction both before and after a two-quarter cross-racial student-empowerment diversity program using surveys, interview, and document analysis. A comparison group made up of students from the general student population and a control group made up of students who had indicated interest in participating in such a diversity program but had not yet participated in the treatment took the surveys at the beginning and the conclusion of the two quarters. Qualitative and quantitative data sources were analyzed to determine if reasonable conclusions could be made about campus climate perceptions, cross-racial comfort, and cross-racial interactions of the students who had engaged in the intervention versus the students in the control and the comparison groups. The data suggested that the intervention serves to mitigate disparities in campus climate satisfaction between Black students and other participants: while the intervention positively impacts Black male campus climate perception, it negatively impacts campus climate for non-Black participants. While quantitative data suggested no impact on cross-racial comfort for any of the participants, qualitative data suggested moderate advancements for Black male participants. The findings from the study affirm the positive impact of meaningful intergroup dialogue on campus climate perception for Black male undergraduates. Implications for higher education administrators and faculty are addressed. Institutional agents need to work to change the culture on their campuses by taking a clear stand against racism, stereotypes and implicit bias. While faculty must commit themselves to mentorship of Black men on their campuses, both faculty and staff must seek ways to implement intergroup dialogue into their classrooms and programs. All of these things must happen if places of higher education are to become spaces where all students thrive and learn across and in spite of differences.

Book excerpt: The current study explored the relationships within a higher education institution between innovative and inclusive mission-identity perceptions and school sense of community among first-generation U.S. citizens and first-generation college students, with varying racial backgrounds. During Fall 2012, a total of 4,492 participants at a large, urban, and Catholic university completed the Innovative and Inclusive (I/I) subscale from the DePaul Mission and Values Inventory as well as the School Sense of Community (SSOC) scale. Two 2 x 2 x 5 ANCOVAS were run to determine whether there were any differences across generation statuses and racial background for both measures. Additionally, regression analyses were run to determine whether students' perceptions of the campus mission as innovative and inclusive predicted students' scores on the school sense of community scale. Results found that Caucasian students reported a stronger school sense of community, whereas Hispanic students reported stronger mission-identity perceptions. Furthermore, generational statuses significantly interacted for SSOC, whereas first-generation college students perceived higher I/I perceptions compared to non-first-generation college students. Moreover, students' perceptions of I/I significantly predicted students' SSOC scores. Implications for Community Psychology and higher education policy are discussed.
